This Year's Model Updates:

For their second season in the U.S. market, the 2003 Mini Cooper and Cooper S will now come with a second remote key and pre-wiring for a dealer-installed alarm system. Anthracite (smoke gray, that is) interior trim is available as a no-cost option for both cars, and the Cooper S is eligible for the high-gloss silver interior treatment found in the base Cooper. Sound systems will be satellite radio-ready this year, and the rear cargo area now has a power point.

Pros:
  • The thrill of owning a piece of history with modern underpinnings, BMW-engineered suspension and steering, chock full of comfort and safety features, hatchback utility, scheduled maintenance on-the-house for 3 years/36,000 miles.
Cons:
  • Not enough horsepower in base model, questionable seat comfort, not much room for passengers and cargo, price goes up quickly with options, limited supply encourages dealer mark-up.

  • Fun to Drive When Not in the Repair Shop - 2003 Mini Cooper
    By -

This is a great car to drive, but our Mini Cooper S has had multiple trips to the repair shop for various quirks - a replaced key reader (after 3 visits), squealing clutch, replaced head, noisy blower fan replaced, electric fan for power steering replaced, vented gas-cap issues, short run-flat tire life (<25,000 miles). All of this at under 30,000 miles and 3 years. The dealership was very supportive, though, and took care of the problems, even towing our car back to dealership for most of the repairs (100 miles, one-way) for no charge.

Get over the size. Yeah ,so its small.BFD--thats what makes er rock--- but 6 airbags ,alphabet soup brakes systems and a 4star crash rating help to alleviate safety concerns for the Ralph Naders(I heard she didnt get a 5star because the front bumper was too stiff if you hit a pedestrian!). Nimble, surprises others in traffic, constantly get asked about her.FAST. I sold an Audi TT 180 Quattro Coupe to go MINI. This is more fun and I dont feel guilty about the cost compared to the TT.

  • Nothing Better for $20,000 - 2003 Mini Cooper
    By -

Considering what cars consumers get these days for $20,000 the Mini Cooper S is sent from heaven. I am willing to say that most people have never experienced the kind of attention one gets driving around in one of these things. Everybody I meet loves it. It makes people smile and thats very rare for an affordable car. This isnt a Porsche, the performace isnt stellar, but its very fast, very agile, very beautiful, very well made and thought out, and very impressive overall. Its not for everyone, but for a 23 year old, just graduated from college, architect with no family and not too much money; you cant possibly find anything better, period.

  • Maintenance monster - 2003 Mini Cooper

I love the way it drives, looks, handles but I hate that within 4 years of ownership and 60k miles Ive had to replace all 4 brakes at $600 - rotors and pads (considered normal). If you drive 50k miles on a set of brakes you are doing really well according to Mini. Drivers seat is broken, estimated repair $500 - I weigh 135lbs. Shocks on the back door replaced $135. Passenger window motor replaced (warranty), back shelf replaced (warranty). 60K tune up $400 for oil, filters and timing belt whether needed or not. Leather coverings cracked/torn. Windshield is cracked from 1st 6 months of ownership. Perhaps Ill replace it this year.

  • the Great Cooper experience - 2003 Mini Cooper

This is the funnest car to drive! It is like being in a remote control car with its tight turns and maneuverabilty. I love filling the gas tank up with these high prices. Its cheap to run and goes forever on a tank of gas! We love taking it into tight spaces and parking it with no problem. We love its expensive look and everyones assumption that we must be rich to own one! The Cooper is a great toy with major practicality. We always take our family of four plus the kids sports equipment around for the ride. It has great roomy storage and we havent found anything that wont fit in it... except maybe a couch! An absolutely amazing car!

  • Super Fun But Also Expensive to Own - 2003 Mini Cooper
    By -

After owning a MINI S for 2.5 years and 15,000 miles I can say this is the most fun car I have ever had. However, it has been the most troublesome car for me to date as well with $2000 in repairs, and that is parts only because I can repair it myself. Now, this is a car that was owned by the lead MINI tech at the dealership for its first 70,000 miles and maintained religiously since new. And now it has rust, yes rust on a 7 year old car. There are two big holes in the sheet metal just below the taillights. Keep in mind when buying one that you are buying a BMW product and thus comes with BMW prices for parts and service.

  • Mini Cooper S Rules! - 2003 Mini Cooper

The Mini Cooper S is awesome. It offers great performance and a great choice of options. A lot of people say that the car could use more room in the back seat. That is true, but I have fit four 6 or so men in mine - not that you would want to go on a road trip that way - but it is fine if you are just going out to lunch. There is a good amount of leg/head room for front seat. In general the car is bigger inside than it looks on the outside. I didnt get the heated seats, if you are in a cold climate though I highly recommend it.

  • Cool, Fun Machine - 2003 Mini Cooper

For what this car is worth, its well worth it. The built quality in the fit & finish of the car is superior than other cars in the same price range. What car out there can you find for $17K that has 6 airbags and free maintenance. Its a NO BRAINER!!
