This Year's Model Updates:

For their second season in the U.S. market, the 2003 Mini Cooper and Cooper S will now come with a second remote key and pre-wiring for a dealer-installed alarm system. Anthracite (smoke gray, that is) interior trim is available as a no-cost option for both cars, and the Cooper S is eligible for the high-gloss silver interior treatment found in the base Cooper. Sound systems will be satellite radio-ready this year, and the rear cargo area now has a power point.

Pros:
  • The thrill of owning a piece of history with modern underpinnings, BMW-engineered suspension and steering, chock full of comfort and safety features, hatchback utility, scheduled maintenance on-the-house for 3 years/36,000 miles.
Cons:
  • Not enough horsepower in base model, questionable seat comfort, not much room for passengers and cargo, price goes up quickly with options, limited supply encourages dealer mark-up.

  • Nothing Better for $20,000 - 2003 Mini Cooper

Considering what cars consumers get these days for $20,000 the Mini Cooper S is sent from heaven. I am willing to say that most people have never experienced the kind of attention one gets driving around in one of these things. Everybody I meet loves it. It makes people smile and thats very rare for an affordable car. This isnt a Porsche, the performace isnt stellar, but its very fast, very agile, very beautiful, very well made and thought out, and very impressive overall. Its not for everyone, but for a 23 year old, just graduated from college, architect with no family and not too much money; you cant possibly find anything better, period.

This is the funnest car to drive! It is like being in a remote control car with its tight turns and maneuverabilty. I love filling the gas tank up with these high prices. Its cheap to run and goes forever on a tank of gas! We love taking it into tight spaces and parking it with no problem. We love its expensive look and everyones assumption that we must be rich to own one! The Cooper is a great toy with major practicality. We always take our family of four plus the kids sports equipment around for the ride. It has great roomy storage and we havent found anything that wont fit in it... except maybe a couch! An absolutely amazing car!

  • Mini Cooper S Rules! - 2003 Mini Cooper

The Mini Cooper S is awesome. It offers great performance and a great choice of options. A lot of people say that the car could use more room in the back seat. That is true, but I have fit four 6 or so men in mine - not that you would want to go on a road trip that way - but it is fine if you are just going out to lunch. There is a good amount of leg/head room for front seat. In general the car is bigger inside than it looks on the outside. I didnt get the heated seats, if you are in a cold climate though I highly recommend it.

For what this car is worth, its well worth it. The built quality in the fit & finish of the car is superior than other cars in the same price range. What car out there can you find for $17K that has 6 airbags and free maintenance. Its a NO BRAINER!!

Excellent combination of driving fun and mileage. While the main components seem sturdy, there have been minor flaws--such as a shift knob that flaked apart, driver seat broke after 2 weeks, cooling fan didnt shut off, etc. While these are relatively minor issues, they carry more weight when the closest dealer is 30 miles away! I would recommend only if one has access to another vehicle for emergencies. Its not unlike having a really hot looking babe; one overlooks certain flaws or inconveniences for the pleasures involved.

  • This is one fun car! - 2003 Mini Cooper

Its not the fastest car out there, but it certainly one of the most fun to drive! It handles better than any car Ive ever driven in stock form. You find yourself taking lots of detours just to get on a windy road rather than a straight on. Could use a little more power though, especially low end torque. Unfortunately, the dealers are only getting a very limited supply of JCW kits. Some people complain about the noise and harsh ride of the 17" wheels w/ runflats, but I dont think its that bad.

  • Year Old MINI - 2003 Mini Cooper

This was a very early US MINI, delivered the first day they were available for sale, but it has been absolutely flawless. It is our commuter car so it has seen primarily highway mileage, but has had no warranty claims and has needed nothing but oil changes. Quality is excellent; would definetly buy another one.

Great fun-appeal, economical and gas- friendly. Almost seems too good to be true! Easy to park, and great room.

The 2003 MINI Cooper S is incredible! The styling is on par with exotic cars (Im the only one in the area with one and I get stares all the time). The headlights are awesome. I love the button posistions. When Im in 6th gear it the Cooper S still has great acceleration.
