This Year's Model Updates:

Both 2004 Mini Cooper trims offer a new three-spoke leather sport steering wheel. A rear power socket returns as a standard item, and beige leather sport seats are now available. A digital speedometer readout has been added to the electronic display, and an instantaneous fuel-consumption function has been added to its on-board computer.

Pros:
Cons:
  • Not enough horsepower in base model, questionable seat comfort, not much room for passengers and cargo, some low-grade interior materials.

  • Fun To drive But Build quality stinks - 2004 Mini Cooper
    By -

I was really enjoying my Mini for the first 10,000 miles; a real fun car to drive. After 12,000 miles I started getting rattles and my clutch started to squeal occasionally when it was released. I have complained several time to customer service and the dealership, but they are refusing to take care of the problem under warranty. I think Mini has had some build quality issues, hopefully they get them taken care of. Proceed with caution. Hopefully customer service will improve.

  • Automatic Transmission Trouble! - 2004 Mini Cooper
    By -

Wish I had known this vehicle has a history of severe transmission problems! In all the years Ive been a car owner, Ive never had a transmission just die on me! I have now! Come to find out, this is not unusual with the entire fleet of automatic transmission MINIs!!!! What a bummer!

  • Mini car; major problems - 2004 Mini Cooper
    By -

This car looks wonderful but the build quality leaves a lot to be desired. There are rattles and noises that no- one (not even the unhelpful dealership where I bought it) can find and resolve. The car draws attention even from the blind but I just cant get past the cramped feeling from the interior.

  • Dont buy a mini with a CVT!!!! - 2004 Mini Cooper
    By -

I had my heart set on a mini, and I wanted an automatic, so I purchased a used 04 mini CVT 38k,mile. The day after purchase , it would red line at 15 mph. I took it to the local mini dealership, and they told me that it was normal, that I probably was not driving it aggressively enough. So then it stalled on me at a red light, and they said this was normal, still not driving it aggressively enough. After this happening probably 9-11 times in the 6 weeks I had it, I sold it. I would have to drive it around the parking lot for about 20 min. to get it to get back to its normal self. Some people say that theirs goes out completely. I am lucky I got rid of mine while I could! DONT BUY MINI

  • Interior Ergonomics Need Work - 2004 Mini Cooper
    By -

The car looks cool on the outside but it needs some help with the interior finish. The sunroof rattles. My dealer pretends the problem does not exist. The biggest pain is the placement of the foot pedals. Every time you use the clutch, your left foot smacks against the door of the fuse box. It makes a resounding smack and is quite annoying. The interior styling is nice, but the color choices are limited. For example, a tan interior looks good with British Racing Green paint. However, they charge $1300 more for that! Otherwise your choices are limited to black with silver plastic, or black with grey plastic.

  • mini has problems - 2004 Mini Cooper

my mini was bought in 2002, and i have had about 12 bad things go wrong, from bad weather stripping, car not starting, loose fuel cap ( which makes the computer think your dripping gas), paint chipping off the gear shift, and much more, recently the moonroof screen on my broke in to pieces, Im a very getile driver and these things just happened!! :(

  • A great car if you have a spare one and money - 2004 Mini Cooper
    By -

It holds the road like it was glued to it and it is easy to drive, but after that it is all bad. I have lost track of the repairs it has needed. Three transmissions and four clutches with the first transmission and clutch at 10K so it isnt the driver. The front air dam falls off it you even touch a curb. The leather seats are falling apart. Heat and AC havent worked in two years. The third stop light leaks and goes bad every couple of years. The muffler failed at 21K. The key doesnt work if you are more than ten feet from the car. I would never buy another even though the repair record on the newer models looks a lot better than the one for 2004.

Warrenty has run out now the costs keep rolling in!!!
