Overview & Reviews
Still smarting from that 1996 "redesign" that had many longtime Sable fans running to the competition, Mercury performed some minor cosmetic surgery in '98 to help soften the Sable's front end. This year's changes are limited to new wheel designs, a revised gauge cluster and interior console, as well as suspension alterations designed to improve overall ride quality. The particulate filtration system has been deleted from this year's models.
- With Mercury dropping its prices on all 1999 models, the Sable is an even better buy than last year.
- It offers no substantial advantage over the similarly-priced and not-as-weird-looking Accord or Camry.

Solid and Dependable - 1999 Mercury Sable
By tomahan - April 17 - 2:00 amCar has worked flawlessly, nothing but regular maintenance to date. Replaced original set of tires at 58k miles. Automatic transmission shifting good be smoother from low to high gear when power accelerating. Car is ugly, but very comfortable to drive.

99 Sable Transmission - 1999 Mercury Sable
By deputydawg - February 9 - 2:00 amIve had the vehicle in the shop 3 times in the past 2 years for transmission problems. Not sure if this is typical of a Sable or Carmax issues. Also, the gas gauge has never worked correctly.

Sable -$ fror $ = the best buy - 1999 Mercury Sable
By M535i - August 25 - 10:00 amWe are just about at 70,000 miles and never had any major repairs. The car is much faster than compatible modles and the LS trim makes the car look real sleak. Dont be afraid of buying as sable! However, never buy one with a trailer hitch as the tranmittions are not designed for towing. Stay away fromt the 3.8 Liter motor because of head gasket problems. I have leather seats, sunroof and climate control and a compatible Toyota Camry would have been a lot of thousands more. Why pay all that extra money.

Great Car at Great Price - 1999 Mercury Sable
By Love my Sable - April 25 - 10:00 amI bought my 1999 Sable in 2000. I have only had to do routine maitenance on it and have had NO problems with the car whatsoever. It is a smooth and comfortable ride and the most dependable car I have ever owned. The only negative thing I can even say about it is that it is a bit of a gas hog. Other than that, I love my Sable:)

Another Ford Transmission Problem - 1999 Mercury Sable
By Steve--Midlothian VA - April 25 - 1:10 amI am the 2nd owner of my 99 Sable (owned it for almost 4 years). It has only 70k miles on it, but it already needs major transmission work. It slips, or neutrals out momentarily, when starting from a stop. Ford, this is a safety issue, not just a value issue! No car should require a transmission rebuild at 70k. Additionally, the ABS light comes on intermittently, the brake pedal groans a bit, then sinks slightly to the floor. The dealer says his diagnostic computer cant communicate with my cars computer, so he doesnt know whats wrong or how to fix it. Makes me feel like I own a FIAT ("Fix It Again, Tony"). Now I understand why so many people switch to Hondas and Toyotas.

Good car - 1999 Mercury Sable
By celticdoc - February 4 - 7:33 pmThe only problem that I had with this car is that the brakes wore out every 25,000 miles. The breaks also had a loud squeaking after several thousand miles. Other than that, the car ran great.
