Overview & Reviews
Still smarting from that 1996 "redesign" that had many longtime Sable fans running to the competition, Mercury performed some minor cosmetic surgery in '98 to help soften the Sable's front end. This year's changes are limited to new wheel designs, a revised gauge cluster and interior console, as well as suspension alterations designed to improve overall ride quality. The particulate filtration system has been deleted from this year's models.
- With Mercury dropping its prices on all 1999 models, the Sable is an even better buy than last year.
- It offers no substantial advantage over the similarly-priced and not-as-weird-looking Accord or Camry.

Solid, if low miles - 1999 Mercury Sable
By A Good Solid Car - May 23 - 3:50 amThe car is a solid investment, runs well and is easy to handle. The engine is very reliable but gas mileage is not the best by far. Excellent vehicle over all. Would recommend a low mileage well taken care of car.

Great All Around Car! - 1999 Mercury Sable
By Mike - May 7 - 11:33 amThe Sable (Merc version of the Ford Taurus) has been found to be a safe and reliable full-size, mid-price, passenger car. I bought it as a "first car" for my 17 year old daughter during her senior year in high school. It has ample style and power; plus plenty of room to move a kid into a dorm room 200 miles away. I fully expect it to satisfy her vehicle needs throughout her college years.

1999 Mercury Sable - 1999 Mercury Sable
By Ford Fan - August 31 - 3:50 amThis is my 15th car I have owned. It has been the best performer of all. I looks and performs very well. It is comfortable on long trips or short trips to the store. I have owned Ford, Chevrolet, Plymouth, Toyota, and Isuzu vehicles. None have performed or been more reliable than this Sable. Im sorry they are being discontinued.

Woody Goody - 1999 Mercury Sable
By Cam 2004 - April 13 - 10:00 amI always wanted a big wagon with wood paneling. But those 80s Fords were too old. But I also wanted a used car. So when I swa one of these on the road I wanted it. I didnt like the front of the Ford Tarus model, I liked the front of the Mercury, the turn signals being in the grille.(reminds me of an old 1960s Dodge Dart.)So, it was not too old, but not brand new, so I bought a white SL model. I then bought a roll of fake wood paneling, from Stripeman.com, and coustomized my wagon. (I loved the Brady Bunch wagon.)It was a bit pricey, but I loved the way my new wagon looked! Its a great family car, lots of room and versital, if you get one with a roof rack like I did.

Sables been good to me - 1999 Mercury Sable
By johnny5 - February 10 - 9:20 amAt 135K miles, I cant complain much, I have no major repairs at all. Proper maintenance is key. My pet peeve is the retraction of the rear seat belts. They were installed such that they need flipped over to be worn, and then get caught on retraction becuase the belt is twisted. This is a lack of attention to detail in the design & manufacturing process that should not exist. This car is still fun to drive.

99 Sable LS - 1999 Mercury Sable
By Golfer - January 3 - 10:00 amIn almost 4 years of use and 37000 miles, besides oil changes and tire rotation Ive only replaced the battery. The car is very dependable and the leather seating is as comfortable as they come. While many criticize the exterior design, I still enjoy looking at its style from front to back, especially the sides not being your typical flat sheet metal style as on most imports. Hope to get another 4 great years from it but just might get another new Sable before that with the price being one of the best values on the market.

My Big Red Wagon - 1999 Mercury Sable
By stantheman - July 11 - 10:00 amMy 99 Sable LS wagon replaced a 96 Explorer with the V8. The Sables horsepower is only 5 less than the Explorer. Since I do not tow anything, I did not miss the difference in the torque. The cargo capacity is not far off from the Explorer. The car is comfortable. I have made several road trips of at least 500 miles; all in comfort. The LS bells and whistles (options)are icing on an outstanding cake. My wife still prefers an SUV but has no qualms about using my car when she needs to move people and/or stuff!
