  • Solid Car - 1997 Mercury Sable

Ive owned this car since around 2002, and its been a solid car. The leather seats are nice, has a good brand name, and though not as good as some foreign cars, better than most American cars from the late 90s to early 2000s. The only problems Ive endured with it so far is some suspension/wheel problems, which was an easy fix, and in the winter, when I tried to warm my car up, then leave it, it would stall a little bit. But besides that, its a good car, though not tremendous, still gets the job done with a fine brand name.

  • Very Durable Performer - 1997 Mercury Sable

We had our previous Sable (1986 wagon) for 240,000 miles and loved it -- great ride, room and comfort, plus 30 mpg highway. So we bought the 1997. Initially, I didnt like it much because the seats were firmer, the springs were harsher and the ride had too much "road feel." It also had less interior space. (And lower fuel economy (28 mpg highway). All that said, my admiration for the car keeps growing and growing. It is very dependable. Nothing has had to be replaced except for tires and oil, so far. This baby ought to go 300,000 easy.

  • Overall its a very good buy - 1997 Mercury Sable

Bought it with 46K, put 100K on it. For $6500, I got low miles, several options including sunroof, dual exhaust, 6 cyl, 3.0L 200hp, and a super clean body. I had no serious problems with it until just this spring, New brakes needed at 145K, transmission needed rebuild at 146k but other than that, the car still drives great. I hate to see it go. I kept it clean, including undercarraige, and maintained the car somewhat well. Awesome heat/AC and it was a great drive on the freeway. It is very low key, as in it doesnt draw police heat, or really any negative attention. It cant be stolen. The key has a chip in it that has to be initiated to start the car. Killer return on ivestment.

  • Nice features - 1997 Mercury Sable

This car has a lot of great built in design features. I really like the center console that doubles as a seat or can be used as a drink/tape/other holder. The instruments are all easy to access. The car runs very quiet and has a smooth ride.

  • Comfortable ride - 1997 Mercury Sable

I bought this car because we needed a cheap car to make it the end of the year. I have neever been a fan of Sables(mostly because of how they looked). After test driving the Sable, I changed my mind. It was very comfortable and easy to drive. It had about 137,000 miles already on it when I purchased it and is still going strong almost a year later.

  • overall a great car - 1997 Mercury Sable

I got this car in the summer of 08. had 143k on it. it rode smoothly. it was quick to accelerate and handling was very responsive. Never got stuck in the winter. had to travel on some really muddy roads sometimes and had no trouble getting through. one concern i had was the transmission. it lagged from 1st to 2nd sometimes but never became a huge issue. I had to repair the altenator twice and replaced the starter once. lots of interior room, huge trunk space. speakers were great quality. ac was beyond amazing, heat was slow but great none the less. i was in an accident in the winter. id say the saftey of the vehicle is excellent. it was a rear end collision and nobody in the car was injured.

  • Its an all right car - 1997 Mercury Sable

After over a 100,000 miles it is using some oil, probably a cylinder head problem. It has good performance. Just had some minor problems with car.

  • Very Good Quality, Low Maintenance - 1997 Mercury Sable

This car has been quite reliable overall. With a couple of exceptions, it has been nearly maintenance free, other than normal wear items. It gets terrific highway gas mileage and rides very smoothly over most road conditions. I highly recommend this car to anyone needing affordable, reliable transportation!

  • Nice car; some issues - 1997 Mercury Sable
    By -

I bought the car used with 82,000 Kms (50,000 miles) on it and have had some issues. The day time running lights dont come on. The high-beam indicator only works sporadically (causing me to blind people from time to time). These two problems may be related; not sure. The biggest issue was a cracked transmission case causing loss of fluid. This perhaps isnt a workmanship issue with the vehicle; possibly damaged by debris or something. I replaced the transmission with a used one a few months back and everything seems fine. The car is a pleasure to drive and after 7 years still looks immaculate; no rust.
