This Year's Model Updates:

Still smarting from that 1996 "redesign" that had many longtime Sable fans running to the competition, Mercury performed some minor cosmetic surgery in '98 to help soften the Sable's front end. This year's changes are limited to new wheel designs, a revised gauge cluster and interior console, as well as suspension alterations designed to improve overall ride quality. The particulate filtration system has been deleted from this year's models.

Pros:
  • With Mercury dropping its prices on all 1999 models, the Sable is an even better buy than last year.
Cons:
  • It offers no substantial advantage over the similarly-priced and not-as-weird-looking Accord or Camry.

  • something wrong - 1999 Mercury Sable

I have owned this vehicle for thity days. There is something wrong when the car is cold. There is a hesitation in the accelleration at about 40 miles per hour. The dealer replaced a transmission line and a purge cannister (gas was leaking). the dealership has been good to take care of the charges so far.

Got this car as a hand me down from my mom, which she bought used. The engine is solid, however the transmission can be suspect at times. Currently have 147,000 miles on it, with only wear parts being replaced, as well as the speed sensor at 145,000. Mileage is not amazing, about 20-24mpg city highway. Great highway cruiser.

  • UK driver great first American car, when i have it - 1999 Mercury Sable

My mrs got a Chevrolet Astrovan few years ago so decided to find an American car for me. Had it for nearly 4 years now. Been great to drive BUT is a gas guzzler, had to replace brake pads and discs which i think is wear and tear, also had some other matters to do with exhaust and suspension fixed. Windsreen wipers come to life by themselves and is infuriating. Now i have to replace front wheel bearings, and replace rad after leak which needed to be imported from USA. ABS light comes on frequently. Does not sound too promising especially when i have to take it to a specialised garage and is away for a month at a time. On plus side its bigger than UK vehicles and fast. Comfy and solid

  • Not bad - 1999 Mercury Sable

I previously owned a 1997 GS and put on 135K and drove it till it dropped. It was good, solid and economical transportation which is why I bought this one. The 97 had the basic engine gave me 27+ MPG hwy. I followed the owners manual as to when to perform maintenance and cannot complain (of course, I never took it a dealer where their rates were way oput of line). My 1999 with the 24 valve OHV which is very peppy averages about 25+ MPG highway. Both are great salesman cars and I look at them as a disposable products. I wouldnt hesitate to buy another one.

  • GREAT USED CAR SO FAR - 1999 Mercury Sable

Driven 50,000 miles over the past two years, no major problems. Just did my first brake job at 65,000 miles along with a major tune-up. Oil changes every 6,000 miles with filter changes every other 12,000. Driven every day for business. Over the road Salesman start and stop traffic, with alot of highway miles.

I bought mine 6 years ago with 28,716, it now has 195,000. The tranny can be hard to shift when parked on a slope, but it has held up. The cars engine is solid and has been no problem what so ever. The wipers go off every so often. I have had problems for the past two years with the fan not blowing heat when on high, maybe crud in the lines again. It can really be hard to get anything in that trunk opening and folding mirrors would be nice also. The car has had its share of problems with stuff that has failed but never all at once and only a few hundred bucks, nothing that would break the bank. Junkyards, good auto repair shops, parts stores and plus any maintenance I do keep it running.

  • The 1999 Sable LX, with full leather - 1999 Mercury Sable

I have had zero problems, none whatsoever, in the four years I have owned this car. It is solid, very comfortable, a good performer, and everything works perfectly. The only drawbacks I have noted: the car is a bit jiggly on rough pavements, and the engine (the DOHC) is sort of unrefined compared to the Camry or Accord.

  • Check it out. - 1999 Mercury Sable

Very reliable - routine maintenance done by dealer. When I bought this new, all of the features in the LS package (leather, ABS, Moonroof free), along with rebate and .9 financing - no other sedan seemed to compare. After 2.5 years, I am still very satisfied.

  • family man with 91k - 1999 Mercury Sable

I bought the car with 84k miles and Im impressed. The Duratec engine starts easy in the winter and has ample pep. I get about 22.5 mpg on average (after tune up), which could be better I think. Its comfortable, quiet and roomy. No problem driving in snow. Huge trunk but the opening could be bigger. Its rather susceptible to cross winds when driving at highway speeds but otherwise smooth and solid (no rattle). The heated mirrors clear ice/snow build up pretty quick. Plenty of room for 3 kid seats in the back.
