Second-row bucket seats are available on Luxury and Premier models; a tire-pressure monitoring system is now standard on these models. The Advance Trac stability control system is a late-availability option on two-wheel-drive Mountaineers. The upgraded Audiophile sound system with in-dash CD changer is optional on Luxury models, while Convenience models no longer offer a cassette player. Finally, power-adjustable pedals are a new option on the Convenience model.

• Excellent ride and handling characteristics for a truck-based SUV, strong optional V8, comfortable cabin with user-friendly layout, good crash test scores.

• Some low-grade materials, low resale value, confusing controls on highline models, poor fuel economy.

  Weve only owned our Mountaineer for 3 days, and its our first SUV. Weve already used it to haul a number of large items home, and we love the roominess, power, handling, and convenience of the vehicle. Compared to the minivans, other SUVs, and cross- over vehicles we looked at and drove (Buick Rendezvous, Nissan Murano, etc.), this vehicle is an incredible value, even before the free DVD system offered at the time!

  Great power actually i have a 2002 mountaineer!!! When the pedal hits the floor instant results!!!!!!!!!! And i also just love the design i dont want them to stop that design! I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING ANOTHER MERCURY MOUNTAINEER!!!! Very satisfied! I love the regular engines my wife has a ford explorer with a flex fuel engine. i dont care for the engine not as much power!!!

  I needed a truck with a third row seat. Looks are very important. This truck is not too common and the front is so stylish. Fuel is poor but many suvs are. The interior is spacious, so is the third row seat. Oh yeah, drives wonderful too!

  My parents bought this car brand new and gave it to me. They had no problems every, except that back hatch crack that is common, i get it and everything is wrong at 76,000. rain out of gas on I-80 recently because all of a sudden my gas gage doesnt work. my ABS light is always on and my cruise never works. my ac and heat do not work. back riper flew off, tranny is apparently going out, loud metal clinking, stereo bass and treble dont work, speaker goes in and out, leather had been cracked since day 1. i love this car cause i know what it was like brand new and have kept us safe but i offically hate it too

  tremendous improvement over older mountaineer models. ride is carlike and the seats offer great comfort to both driver and passengers. adequate power, good brakes, convenient and logical instrumentation. poor mileage (15 highway). well priced due to incentives.
