Overview & Reviews
There are affordable cars, and then there are cars that offer thrilling performance. Rarely do the two ever converge, but Japanese automaker Mazda has made it a tradition of coming up with vehicles that combine both of these eminently desirable traits.
The Toyo Cork Kogyo Company, founded in 1920 in Hiroshima, Japan, used the name "Mazda" for its first three-wheeled truck, built in 1931. Company founder Jujiro Matsuda chose the word "Mazda" because it was the name of the Zoroastrian god of good and light. Work on a small sedan began in the late 1930s, but development was halted so the company could pitch in with Japan's war effort. In the wake of World War II and the rebuilding that followed, the company refocused its efforts on car development and manufacturing.
By 1960, the first Mazda automobile -- the R360 coupe -- was developed, and the company's foray into the production of passenger vehicles began in full force. Other landmark developments were soon to follow. In 1961, the company entered into a technical partnership with NSU and Wankel to develop and produce rotary engines, a union that led to Mazda's distinguishing itself as the only manufacturer to offer three engine configurations: conventional gasoline piston, diesel and rotary. The '60s also saw the introduction of the company's first pickup, the B-Series 1500, as well as its first rotary-engine vehicle, the 110S Cosmo Sport.
Mazda began selling cars in the U.S. in 1970. In the early part of the decade, the automaker rolled out the RX-2. Powered by the noted 12A rotary, the RX-2 introduced America to Mazda's effort to build cars that were affordable and fun to drive. The decade also saw the introduction of the RX-3, RX-4 and now iconic rotary-powered RX-7 sports car. In 1979, Ford Motor Company purchased a 25 percent stake in Mazda after the Japanese company encountered a number of financial difficulties.
The 1980s was a decade of rebirth for Mazda. The company officially took on the Mazda name (though all its vehicles since its launch in the '20s have carried that brand). It also witnessed an upswing in sales sparked by successful new products like the 323 (which was first called the GLC in the American market) and 626. The 1990 model year saw the launch of a car that would prove a huge hit for Mazda: the MX-5 Miata. Lauded for its ultra-responsive handling and affordability, the drop top has been a consistent favorite, and now holds the distinction of being the world's best-selling roadster.
Mazda began the 1990s with a bang by winning Le Mans with the 787B; it was the first time a Japanese automaker had won the prestigious race, and marked the only win for a rotary engine. Vehicles like the RX-7 and MX-5 Miata scored kudos from automotive journalists, and landed on many top 10 lists. However, save for the Miata, the company's vehicles experienced declining sales in the U.S., and the company's fortunes suffered as a result.
The new millennium has seen Mazda regain its stride, as the automaker has invested in new development. Models like the Mazda 2 and CX-9 have broadened the lineup and won over a whole new generation of fans, while the enthusiast-oriented RX-8 and Mazdaspeed performance models have exemplified the company's spirited philosophy. Most recently, Mazda has focused on designing its cars to be as fuel-efficient as possible while also still being fun to drive and affordable to own.

I love my car! - 2006 Mazda Mazda3
By lovemycar - April 13 - 4:26 amEvery time I drive my car, I feel like it is the first time I have driven it--and this is after owning it for over two years! I am a student, and this car was very affordable for me. It has everything I wanted in a car--safety, handling, comfortability, peppy engine, good gas mileage, fun to drive, great features inside and out, easy to maintain/ not very costly. It makes me feel great, safe, and very pleased with my purchase. I would not trade this car in for anything!!

Best Small SUV - 2002 Mazda Tribute
By Big Tom - April 12 - 9:00 pmTest drove and priced several small SUVs. I am 69". This one has plenty of head and leg room and is comfortable to drive. I have the ES model and it has everything to offer that vehicles selling for $10000 more have. The gas economy is a little weak but appears to match other 6 cylinder vehicles with the same horsepower.

2nd Mazda3 for me in 4 years - 2012 Mazda Mazda3
By gr8mazda3 - April 12 - 12:40 pmAfter doing a lot of research and comparing the Focus, Dart, Sonic, Cruze, Golf, etc., I just kept coming back to the Mazda3. I had to trade in my previous one, a 2008 GT loaded, due to the manual tranny. I loved that car, but back issues have gotten into my left leg now, and shifting became a safety issue. I passed on the GT model and got the SkyActiv I Touring sedan with 6A. After health issues forced me out of driving for pure fun, I used to hypermile with my 08 model. With K&N filter and using 100% gasoline, I could get 33-35 mpg consistently. It has taken some time for me to get used to that auto, but I got 37 mpg on 1st tank. So much easier on my back, leg, but still zooms.

This is the compact car youre looking for - 2014 Mazda Mazda3
By eserna - April 12 - 12:05 amThe 2014 Mazda 3 is an eye-catching car. Thats enough to get you in the door. Once you sit down and take it for a spin, you realize theres not much reason to look at the competition. Its fun to drive, loaded with tech at your discretion, good on gas, and, oh yeah, its the best looking car in its class. I purchased the i-touring sedan in Soul Red with the technology package, and I couldnt be happier. With over a thousand miles on it already, Ive been averaging a shade over 35mpg overall in mostly highway driving, with a couple more conscientious drives hitting the magic 40mpg mark. While the price may be a shade higher than others in its class, consider it enjoyment tax.

Great car for the price - 2005 Mazda Mazda6
By Vicky - April 9 - 4:53 pmI had previously owned 3 large SUVs. Didnt know how I would like a small car. Got in the car and have never looked back. I feel very safe in the car and love the sporty look and feel of this car. This car also takes curves and turns wonderfully. Only dislike is the powder on the wheels from the brakes? Love everything else. Wouldnt hesitate to buy another.

Zoom-Zoom is only half the story - 2006 Mazda Mazda6
By tidebelle - April 9 - 12:30 pmI traded my 02 Protege5 for my new 6i (standard model, no extra bells and whistles but very well equipped). The Protege5 was an awesome little car, and I actually miss it at times. Ive only had the 6 for a few months and I really do like the get-up-and-go. Its a really smooth ride, quiet, and easy on the eyes. I dont like the cup holder placement and am not happy about there being no ash tray or lighter. Not even the option to purchase. The turn radius isnt as sharp as Id like it to be, but overall, so far, Im happy with my choice. Mazda has a great warranty. If youre searching for classy style, power and great gas mileage, search no more...Mazda6 is the one!

The Best Mid-Size Sedan - 2009 Mazda Mazda6
By Matt - April 8 - 8:46 amThe new redesigned Mazda6 exterior and interior and very nice. I bought the S Grand Touring. The 272hp is quite powerful. I have clocked the car going from 0-60 in 6.1 secs. According to Edmunds.com, "the Mazda 6 is more powerful and quicker than the Total Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Ford Fusion. For the price, it is actually the most powerful car you can drive. Love the blind spot monitoring system. The leather seats are very comfortable. It is nice to have heated seats in the winter. Love the Bose system. The car has wonderful steering and control. The 5 star crash test rating gives me a piece of mind. I love the headlights. Overall, I love the car. I recommend it.

Stylish & Stability - 2007 Mazda CX-7
By Manbir - April 8 - 6:40 amI love my zoom zoom CX-7. Strong, sturdy, hold to the ground like a magnet during heavy downpour (yet to test on snow). Much more stable than other SUVs that I have driven in other segments. Its even fun to drive with all 5 passengers. Great looks with great interiors.
