After two fun years with the Protege ES I can report that this cars best feature is the well developed suspension. The steering provides great feedback, and is properly weighted.Brakes are up to the task even with the low tech drums out back. The motor is adequate but who doesnt want more power. Styling is clean both exterior and interior and is holding up well to the rigors of the day to day grind. On the downside I have found that this is a noisy car and I have had to add some insulation to the rear panel and doors. Additionally I had the vehicle undercoated. I have also had to solve a couple of rattle/buzz issues.

I bought a new 99 Mazda, march 1999. Till date I have travelled 62000 miles. All I changed are the tyres and brake pads.

I LOVE my Protege. I purchased it brand new (5/01). Ive put 76K miles on it and ABSOLUTELY no problems! Only oil changes & I did the timing belt & water pump at 60K as recommended.

I would definitely recommend this vehicle. I purchased the 5 speed manual transmission and it is fun to drive. It is a comfortable car with everything within reach. This car has a huge trunk w/ a great split seat feature. I appreciate the "anchor" system for my sons car seat. I feel safe and secure while driving; it handles very well on the road. Only wish that it was not so loud inside.

Been using the car for 3 1/2 years, no maintenance charges at all except the usual oil changes, and a battery that was was replaced recently. Performance is very good to go.

I absolutely loved my Protege, it was very reliable, comfy, and fun to drive. I put 150K on it. It also got excellent gas mileage. It will not play burned cds and had a year where I had to have the belt replaced a few times, since then its been running like a top. Just traded it in today for a newer car, but was sad to see it go. I really hope it goes to a great home!

  • reliable commuting car - 1999 Mazda Protege

It keeps going and going. I had some transmission problems initially but warranty completely covered it, including my rental car. Other than that, it never lets me down. I commute 120 miles a day 5 days a week and no problems in performance. Its not a luxury or sports feel but I wasnt looking for that. Ill keep it and run it into the ground.

Protege is one the best handling front wheel drive cars in its class still to date. The car moves any where you want it move without much effort. The interior is pretty good better then average. Gas mileage is great on the car. Ive had my protege for about 3 years and its on 93,000 and never gave me any problems as long you take care of the car. I suggest buying some performance parts for the car, cold air intake, and exhaust system. For ride comfort suggest getting 17 inch rims no bigger with sporty tires. Will make a world difference.

  • Great cheap car - 2002 Mazda Protege

Bought this car about 6 months ago when it had 90k miles, it now has just over 100k miles and I couldnt be happier. Not a thing went wrong with it. Very great reliable car. Inexpensive to repair. I average about 25mpg in the city and around 31-32 on the highway. Small compact car makes it easy to park compared to moms van. Mazda really nailed this car! I also added a Mazdaspeed protege kit (front and rear bumper and spoiler) for less than $500. I plan on getting coilovers for about $300. Good kids car. I drive this car around to deliver pizza, it starts up every times and lasts for a longtime without maintence. It has never left me stranded either.

  • Protege steps to the plate. - 2001 Mazda Protege

The Protege needed a face lift. Here it is! Civics were murdering the market but now it seems Mazda has something to compete with. This youthful vehicle drives smooth and comfortably with room for five. The appeal is not only to the low income single home family. It appeals to all who have ideals of street racing or the savy to drive through town screaming "Hey look at me! Sexy as I wanna be." Young adults as well as older individuals feel spirited when they get behind the wheel. Mazda hit a homerun this year.
