  • Excellent ES 5 Speed - 2002 Mazda Protege

A very solidly built and very fun to drive.I test drove the Civic,Corolla,Sentra and Elantra GT but went back to the Protege ES because of the classy styling and excellent handling not found on the others. Also, with more standard equipment and the available ABS/Side Air bag/Moonroof option makes it a great deal.

I love this car. I bought it used with 48,000 mi. Now it has 115,100 mi. It is so great on gas and now with gas prices being almost $4.00 I am not feeling as much pain as others. Ive had minor problems, unexpected issues but other than that I am satisfied with it. Ive added a couple of different things to it like, a spoiler, euro carbon fiber tail lights, wind visors, tinted windows etc. I also replaced the radio because the factory radio was messing up on me big time. You would press clock and it would show the CD track # and vice versa. So I replaced it. Just recently got a new paint job and it looks even better!

  • Nice looking car but some major problems - 2003 Mazda Protege
    By -

I bought the LX 2.0 in 2007 with 60,000 Ks on it. About 8 months later, anytime it rainied either overnight or in the day the car was parked, when I started up the car it would shake and sputter then the engine light would flash and then stay on. Oh and the big hit was when the transmission went on the car from a worn seal that probably costs .25 cents, it ended up costing me $2000.00 to get fixed and this was in April 2009 with about 98,000 kms on it. A friend has a Mazda Tribute and was having the same problems when it rains, it shakes and sputters. NEVER WILL I BUY A MAZDA PRODUCT AGAIN

  • I got a pair of 2000 Mazda Protege ESs - 2000 Mazda Protege

I purchased two PRO-ES in March of 2000. Both cars have 53,750+ miles and I have to say they are excellent cars. Very good in the snow and rain. The point and shoot handling is top box for a small sedan. A hoot to drive on the twistys. The Mazda Protege is truly a larger 4-door Miata! Corolla and Civic are for the masses, however the Protege is for those in the know. God Bless Mazda, Zoom Zoom.....

  • I would do it again - 2003 Mazda Protege

I needed a replacement vehicle for the company car that was removed from me as part of a cost reduction. I have just under 5000 miles on the car currently with no problems to date ... I drove ALL competitive compact vehicles , yes I said all Toyota, Honda,Nissan,Ford,Chevy,Saturn,Mitsubis hi..Any way this Mazda was by far the best driving of all the cars I drove..Best handling and acceleration.least amount of noise at freeway speeds. Overall a pleasure to drive for a compact car.

  • Fun without the Price Tag - 2002 Mazda Protege

Got a silver LX in 2006 used with 52,000KM on it, w/ the manual tranny. Also got keyless entry, AC, sunroof. Couple thousand cheaper than a used Civic. At 100,600KM now, only maintenance is oil, plugs, and now tires, pads, rotors, rad fluid flush need done as expected. Peppy to drive, 0-60 in about 9.2w/ manual. Smooth abrupt shifts feel more sports oriented than a manual Dodge Neon which feels more like a toy.Tight suspension, great steering, fairly quiet (quieter than integra) until you hit large bumps. Engine a little noisy at 120KMph. Fuel Eco average 28MPG mixed, or 8L/100km, even with A/C on!(but with slower acceleration!)Seats are comfortable and firm but not as good as newer models.

  • Amazing Reliability, Poor Tire Selectio - 2001 Mazda Protege

I have had my 2 vehicles prior to the purchase of my Mazda bought back on the NY State Lemon Law. Needless to say, I am a fanatic about quality with my vehicle experience. This Protege has NEVER had a problem. EVER. Period. We have had it for 3 years now and it has been outstanding.

  • Thank God for extended warrenties! - 2000 Mazda Protege
    By -

I bought my Mazda brand new and I loved all the extras my Mazda had..it was fully loaded.I am in sales and am in my car for hours a day. The seats get uncomfortable after a while. Thank god for the extended warrenty because as soon as the factory warrenty expired I started having problems.Every time I took it to the dealer to be fixed they said it was fine, or they fixed it...but they didnt. Also,it was the worst car I have ever driven in the snow. It would slide all over the place and do 360s into snow banks when it wasnt even bad out.

Bought my protege with the year end incentives. Couldnt resist the Zero percent financing. Drove the Civic, Focus, Corolla...but they were not as fun to drive. The Mazda doesnt get as good of gas mileage... but its way fun to drive.
