New hatchback and wagon body styles were added to the lineup at the end of 2004 and carry over unchanged for 2005. The optional automatic transmission on all V6 models has been upgraded from a five-speed to a six-speed unit.

Pros:

  • The sleeper of Sport Wagons! - 2005 Mazda Mazda6

This car is the best of both worlds--a true performance sedan and a station wagon capable of hauling asphalt. A total pleasure to drive. The best built US manufactured car I have experienced. Excellent fit and finish. A lot of value for the money.

  • M6s Hatch - 2005 Mazda Mazda6

Recent used purchase. M6s so far offers a spirited and exciting driving experience. Its comfortable, stylish, & sufficiently powerful, although latter could be better. Hatch is very versatile and plenty roomy for four adult commuters. Tires need replacing at 27K miles: they spin when slightly wet; brakes to be upgraded, too. Faint engine tick emerging which Edmunds.com claimed is problem w/"camshaft caps": to the dealer it goes under warranty. High revs to get moving & low-end torque are nuisances, but punch is a thrill once theyre figured out. Mid-rear-childseat clip is near hatch at car back-may need extension. Otherwise, great car to be kept a while.

  • Unbelievably poor performance in snow. - 2005 Mazda Mazda6

This is a nice car for warm months of the year, but if you live any place that it snows STAY AWAY. I live in Minnesota and the performance on snow is terrible. The biggest issue is inability to accelerate. Level ground or an incline, it doesnt matter - you will spin and spin and spin. Its a reliable starter in cold weather, and heats up pretty quick. Stylish too. Im also having issues with my stereo and CD player. This car is so close to having it all....maybe if I lived in southern California Id be all right.

  • Mazda6 - from a teenage perspective. - 2005 Mazda Mazda6

The lesson car I learned to drive in was a Toyota Corolla, with extra brakes that the instructor could use. Nothing too special. The first time I got behind the wheel of my new Mazda6, I was in awe. Its fun to drive, with an enthusiastic acceleration. The maneuverability is great too. This car has a lot of personality; its eager to please, and craves speed.

  • 2004 Mazda 6 - many problems - 2005 Mazda Mazda6
    By -

I have had an 04 Mazda6 for approximately 18 months - was great for first few months and lived up to the hype and reviews. But after about 4 months it developed several problems that 2 dealers and national support have been unable or unwilling to fix. Power and gas mileage are WAY down, shifter mechanism is very rough and sloppy, brakes repeatedly develop a squeal, rough starting when cold, traction control is terrible in the snow, clutch often stammers. I have previously owned 2 other Mazdas (89 MX6 and 99 626); both were good combination of value and reliability, leading me to get the new 6. I was very happy at first but am now very disillusioned with reliability/quality and lack of support from Mazda

  • A fun disappointment - 2005 Mazda Mazda6

There were several cars I was looking at when I bought my 6. The Lexis is 300, Acura tsx, Volvo s240, to name a few. I only stopped and looked at the 6 because my friend wanted to look at one. After I drove it I looked at Edmunds.com for reviews and really did not see anything to turn me away so I bought a fully loaded one. Its comfortable; It runs good, not to small/big. Its just right. However these people on here that rate the 6 a 10 when it comes to gas are nuts!! My Sticker said 22/29 MPG. Seeing how all I do is highway driving I figured 29 would be ok. Well, I check my mileage every time I fill up and the most I ever get it 22MPG. I have a 2001 Ford F150 crew cab 4x4 that gets 21MPGHW

  • Love my Mazda 6 (5-Door Hatchback) - 2005 Mazda Mazda6

I bought my 2005 in early 2006 and still own it. Its paid off, has been without warranty for 2 years and I have not had any problems with the car warranting me to shell out money to get it fixed (besides regular maintenance of course). Luckily for me, any of the problems I have had with the car were rectified when I still had a warranty. Needless to say, I have 60k miles, 80% life on my brakes left (changed in 08 due to a caliper flaw) and the car purrs like it did brand new. I must say the car does NOT sound like a 6 yr old car. It still is flashy on the road (bright red) and is a blast to drive on the freeway flying by everyone else in their mundane vehicles. Hell yeah to Mazda!

  • True Grand Touring - 2005 Mazda Mazda6

This is my primary business vehicle as a traveling sales manager with a long commute. I purchase a new or almost new car every three years and because of the high mileage and business use I prefer mid-size sedans that dont kill me on depreciation. My 6S satisfies my desire for performance and handling. I opted for the five-speed which I am glad I did because the engine is a bit weak until 2500 rpm then revs smoothly and quickly. Great cruiser, reliable, fun and 23-27 mpg

This is after driving 1200 miles. Wanting to replace my 99 Honda Accord V6 Coupe, I drove the Mazda, and a Pontiac G6. The Mazda was clearly the better automobile. The steering has a nice weight and feel to it. The car handles like a sports car, yet the ride is not jarring. The leather seats are very supportive. I love the 6 speed automatic and the ability to shift myself. And the color, Lapis Blue Metallic, is stunning.

This car is so much fun to drive! It handles great, and looks cool too! The size of a sedan, but the looks of a sports car. This is the first car ive ever bought, and I have no regrets!
