Overview & Reviews
The Mazda 3 is an all-new economy sedan and hatchback that replaces the Protege in Mazda's lineup.
- Fun-to-drive character, stylish interior design, strong engines, hatchback utility.
- Ride might be too stiff for some, a few ergonomic quirks, tight rear legroom.

Smooth Running Mazda - 2004 Mazda Mazda3
By Gil Gagne - June 7 - 10:00 amMy model has the 4-speed automatic with 2.3 engine. Very, very smooth engine with absolutely no typical 4 cylinder vibration. Engine is very responsive with more power than needed; can keep up with anything except Corvette. Firm suspension with good handling. Only complaint is the air conditioning system, must run the blower on highest speed whenever sun is shinning and even then cooling is only marginal.

Very capable - 2004 Mazda Mazda3
By Zuzu - May 11 - 2:00 amThis car has a solid feel, crisp handling and good seat comfort. I feel confident behind the wheel and theres plenty of back seat and hatchback utility in this fun package. I paid full boat retail and dont regret it. Our other car is a Miata and its hard to compare these two but it is sporty enough that I dont jones to get back in the sports car. Its really great.

Beware of Plastic Parts and Oil Filters! - 2004 Mazda Mazda3
By George Bennett - May 5 - 3:26 pmAfter driving a Protege for 10 years and 250,000 miles, the 3 S seemed like a great car until I used a Jiffy Lube and cracked the poorly designed oil cartridge housing on the car. Mazda says tough luck, but has issued a service bulletin, and I believe reverted back to the cannister versus the cartridge oil filter. It is sad to say that such a nice car can be ruined by poor design - but in my case (and from what I hear) the case of several other Mazda 3 s owners, that you will have to pay $60.00 at the dealership to make sure that your engine does not suffer major damages. I believe the 2005 model also has this type of filter so be prepared!

New Model, New Problems - 2004 Mazda Mazda3
By charlie2004 - April 30 - 10:00 amPros: Turns great, decent mileage, comfortable (front seats), looks really nice, roomy trunk space, and better than average performance. Cons: Lights keep coming on in front panel, no parts available for this car-- cracked windshield could only be replaced at dealership with original part costing $$$$, one tire blew and the tire can only be changed at dealership (no place has it but factory), to sit comfortable in the front leaves very little space for back seats, very tight ride--not so smooth, and last.. the horn is horrible.

Some Car Award Givers missed it entirely - 2004 Mazda Mazda3
By Mazda3s wins - April 20 - 10:50 amBefore buying this vehicle, researched cars for 4 months. There werent any true sports sedans I could afford. This is one. In two years, the car has been on numerous long trips with some around town driving. Performance is extraordinary and comfort way above average for this price class. My only complaint is some road noise; however this was cured with Ziebart sound deadener and some more carpet in the trunk. After two years of "test drive", it wins on all accounts. It looks like Mazda has fixed some of my suggestions for 06.

EX NISSAN FAN - 2004 Mazda Mazda3
By AKFRIZZ - March 25 - 10:00 amThis car is awesome. The styling is great. The gas mileage has been very good. The 4 cyl is moore than enough that when you step on the gas you quickly realize that your seeing everyone else in the rear view mirror. Handling is very good on the highway and in the curves. It turns on a dime and stops the same way.The number of standard features is mind boogling. Any one in the market for a new carwill be surprised that THIS DOEST IN ANY WAY FEE LIKE A ECONOMY CAR,AND DOEST LOOK IT AS WELL.I had a corvett owner stop me because he thought it was a new body bmw.

I love this car - 2004 Mazda Mazda3
By mjd926 - March 24 - 2:00 amI almost bought a MazdaSPEED Protege, but after the dealer convinced me to test drive the 3, I was hooked! It is almost as fast as the MS Protege, handles on par (for my tastes atleast), and doesnt ride like it is a go-kart. Add to that the fact that I got features like xenon headlights, 6-disc CD, and a moonroof for $2,000 less than the MSP, which didnt even offer those features! It is a great car that seems to be well built. I highly suggest buying one!

So far so good - 2004 Mazda Mazda3
By zetaminer - February 28 - 11:53 amIve had my 3s for 3 months now and have had no mechnical problems. There was some rail dust in the paint but was fixed under warranty. This was the first time I ever bought a car so Im not sure how to rate Mazda dealership service overall. However I orginally looked/test drove in the St. Louis area and did have a bad experience. I ended up buying my car in the Omaha area, mostly because they had an 04 left that didnt have all the options so that it stayed in my price range with the $1000 04 rebate. The service at Sheridan Mazda in Council Bluffs IA has so far been good. They call me to check up on the paint situation and my overall satisfaction with the car.
