This Year's Model Updates:

For 2003, power sliding doors are an option for both the LX and ES trim levels. A towing package and a cargo organizer are two other new options. Also, an alarm and engine immobilizer are now part of a security package, and a cassette player is available on the ES trim level. The LX trim now rides on 16-inch wheels. Inside, floor and cargo mats are now standard on both trim levels, while outside, you'll see a new exhaust tip.

Pros:
  • Compact and maneuverable, confident handling manners, roll-down windows in the sliding doors.
Cons:
  • Limited maximum cargo capacity, lacks some features found in the other minivans.

Wow -- I am only 28 and I never thought of owning a van, but after test driving the MPV on a track at the Mazda Rev It Up event, I was in love with it!! I bought an ES with the GFX package which comes with a body kit carbon fiber interior trim and fog lights. I also have the power dual sliding doors ans six disc in-dash CD changer. Most people think the MPV is an SUV and I have been asked numerous times by bystanders as to what type of vehicle it is. I think the MPV is so under-rated and you never see any on the road. This van is so comfortable and handles like a sports car -- I dont think I will ever buy a car again! ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM!!

MPV is smaller than most mini-vans, but I wanted it that way. We have three children in car seats and being 62", I didnt want to climb up and bend down to get to the third row. I can stay outside the vehicle and still reach the third row seat from the passenger side sliding door (when the second row seat is slid toward the other).

We have had our MPV for just about a month now & still love needing to go somewhere just so we can drive it. We have 3-year-old twins (2 carseats) and find that this vehicle is so functional. We have plenty of room for longer trips, yet the vehicle is the most carlike of the 4 minivans we test drove (Honda, Toyota 04, Chrysler). We opted for the LX with pwr sliding doors, 4 seasons package, sidebags w/tract & roof rack. We paid about 22K! The same in the Toyota or Honda would have been about 4K or so more! In CR the MPVs reliability was 2nd only to that of the Sienna (could this have something to do with it being assembled in Japan?).

  • Best vehicle I have ever owned - 2003 Mazda MPV

The handling and comfort are superb. It is the most practical of other minivans and luxury cars I have ever owned including my 1998 Chrysler Town and Country. I am experiencing about 20 miles per gallon during city driving break-in period.

Today 5/06/05 was the 7th time the vehicle has been in for service. At 50,000 miles it needed new brakes. It has been in for service 3 times for the transmission, only to be told each time that there is a new software download, which is what I was told today since I could not get it to go in reverse the last time I drove it. Now I have to take it in to the dealer again only this time the warranty has expired!

  • What a van! - 2003 Mazda MPV

Ive always hated vans but my wife wanted something roomy and SUVs are overpriced. We picked up an 03 LX for $20,500 after rebate with 4-seasons pkg, rear heat & rear a/c, bumper step, fog lights, roof rack. This thing RUNS! It drives and rides like a car with tons of room considering its considered a compact mini-van. We get 20mpg city with 4300 miles on it so far. I just couldnt touch the Toyota or Honda for the price and the extra room they have isnt worth it for me.

Bought our 03 LX in late 03 when they had great rebates. This van has done it all for us. It tows a popup camper (our LX has the tow package), hauls the kids AND the grandparent thanks to the 3 row seats and has conquered the New England winters. We also like the size (a bit smaller than the Honda, Toyota). No serious mechanical problems, all the little things were covered under warranty. V6 had plenty of power and is rides very well on the highway. Do yourself a favor and check out the used MPVs - they are a bargain!!

  • Wow- Were very happy - 2003 Mazda MPV

After owning the 2003 MPV for several weeks, I continue to be impressed by this van. It is a quality vehicle. After spending several weeks trying to deal on a Town and Country, I came across a review about the MPV. Before I read the review, I was not even aware of the updated MPV. But after a visit to the Mazda dealer and a test drive, I was very excited. Outstanding performance and features at an outstanding price! Why buy the Chrylser/Dodge/Honda, pay more for a similarly equipped vehicle, and look like every other family on the road?

Just bought an 03 LX, loaded with everything except power doors, moonroof and DVD, and we love it!! Highly recommend the All-Sport package, which makes it look and sound great and comes CHEAP (about $700 invoice). Paid just $100 over invoice (about $23k, and the dealer invoice matched Edmunds to the penny, which the salesman was impressed with!), and got much more than I could have got in a Honda or Toyota for the same price, if I could have even GOT one for that price. Turns heads when you drive it, drives like a car, plenty of power, and plenty of room for a family of 4. No sulphur smell detected yet, only that great new van smell!!

I have enjoyed my van a lot. I prefer to drive it more than my other car. The ride is smooth, and it is very reliable.
