This Year's Model Updates:

Mazda adds power to the MPV in the form of a 200-horsepower V6 engine governed by a five-speed automatic transmission, which is just what the doctor ordered for this previously underpowered minivan. The MPV also gains power-sliding doors, available 17-inch alloy wheels, traction control, an improved braking system and revised suspension tuning.

Pros:
  • Compact and maneuverable, confident handling manners, roll-down windows in sliding doors.
Cons:
  • Limited maximum cargo capacity, lacks some features found in the other minivans.

  • Fun but Unreliable - 2002 Mazda MPV

Lack of reliability has been the biggest disappointment with this vehicle. Tires were bald before the warranty expired. Within a year after warranty expired, oxygen sensors had to be replaced ($500) and engine coils had to be replaced (another $500). My sister-in-law has the exact same make/model/year, and shes had the same problems--its like clockwork. It also emits a stinky sulfur smell immediately after turning off. At least its purty and comfy and fun to drive.

I researched this van for 2 years. Was very pleased that Mazda upd the engine to a 3.0, for the power. Have owned it for 1 week. It is so fun to drive and holds plenty of kids. Interior is very versatile. A/C in front is great. Kids are complaining somewhat about the rear A/C. They cant feel it unless its up to the max setting. Gear stick is too long, but getting used to it. To bad the base van doesnt come with the cassette and cd combo. Ultimatly, I love it! It has all the conveniences of the Honda Odyssey, but not the price tag.

We had our mind set on Sienna for months because I have driven nothing but Toyota. It only took one recent ride in my friends MPV though to change my mind. We also had an excellent experience at the dealership--something we were not getter at the Toyota dealerships we visited. No, bigger is not better, better is better.

I like the handling and ride; Overall looks both interior and exterior; impressed with interior room. Power is more than adequate - gets up and goes. Does have wind noise which (I think) is attributed to luggage rack. More wind noise when sun roof open but tolerable.

  • Protege/MPV - 2002 Mazda MPV

My first experience with a Mazda vehicle was my neighbors 1992 Protege LX with 175,000 miles on it. My GM vehicle with 80,000 miles on it had broken down, and I had to use her car to go get parts. I had so much fun in that car with 175,000 miles on it. It also felt better put together than my GM vehicle. Since I was in the market, I immediately researched and purchased a 2000 Protege ES. I am now a proud owner of a 2002 Coastal Blue MPV ES, and I feel just a strongly about it. Just as the Protege is the most fun small car, the MPV is the most fun minivan. The fact that it looks so good only cinches the deal in my opinion.

  • Excellent hauler for a small family - 2002 Mazda MPV

Test drive one & youll know what the rave is all about. Smooth, powerful, quiet, & with a combination of functional elements that you wont find in any other minivan. Build quality is excellent (the only Japanese minvan that is actually built in Japan) with ergonomics that is as good or better than Hondas.

Took out for one hour test drive and look over before buying. Went back with my head between my legs. I couldnt find anything wrong with it at all. Everything was there. No scratches. Ran great. And Zoom, Zoom, Zoom. Sure is fun to drive.

  • Good Value for a Minivan - 2002 Mazda MPV

First, the bad news. We had to completely replace the auto transmission within the first year of ownership. Otherwise, this has been a great vehicle for our family of 5. Looks good, drives well, has nice features like sliding middle seat, windows that open, folding rear bench. The size is about right, and the driving experience is car-like.

  • never again - 2002 Mazda MPV

I think this van is pretty to look at but not much else given teh $$ you pay to own it there arent a lot of fun features and if you think about cutting costs by not having the higher end AC/Heat package because it is a small van think again, it takes forever to cool down or warm up this van. The vents under the front seat are not large enough or powerful enough to control the temp. It is very small, can be very cramped in the front with average size adults in both seats. Overall good handling but definitly sacrifice space and comfort in this van.

  • Much More Than I Expected - 2002 Mazda MPV

I started out loathing all mom-mobile minivans but this Mazda MPV ES has changed all that. Quick, nimble, comfortable and economical (29-30mpg @ 60mph), I dont really miss my Mercedes. The ES model is comfortable to drive on long trips and the upscale radio pulls in more stations than my Mercedes ever did. The power sliding doors and fold-under 3rd seat are extremely convenient, as are the slide-together 2nd row seats (make them a single bench or 2 buckets). Theres always enough power on tap, especially off the line, and passing power seems more than adequate. Its size makes it ideal for fitting in a garage with room to spare. All-in-all, Id buy it again.
