This Year's Model Updates:

Mazda adds power to the MPV in the form of a 200-horsepower V6 engine governed by a five-speed automatic transmission, which is just what the doctor ordered for this previously underpowered minivan. The MPV also gains power-sliding doors, available 17-inch alloy wheels, traction control, an improved braking system and revised suspension tuning.

Pros:
  • Compact and maneuverable, confident handling manners, roll-down windows in sliding doors.
Cons:
  • Limited maximum cargo capacity, lacks some features found in the other minivans.

  • Love it! - 2002 Mazda MPV

This is my first minivan and first Mazda. So far, I am very impressed on both accounts. It is so easy to drive and priced in my market. I was interested in moving up to a family car but this minivan had so much more to offer. Way better than the Honda that everyone rates so highly. I think Mazda needs to promote this van more!

Many, many problems! A lot of what Ive already read - Ignition coils (all 6), sliding door - sticks and doesnt operate properly, and now the tranny - its in the shop right now. I actually have filled almost 10 pages of a notebook because our experience has been so surreal. I even bought the extended Mazda Canada warranty, only to find out time and time again that nothing was covered.

I have owned 2 Mazdas and probably will not again. Neither were vere good. The MPV at 35,000mi. needed the transmission flushed which was not a Mazda recommended service. The Mazda rep said even though the flush wasnt listed in the manual they recommended it be done or the warranty would be voided. 50,000mi. PCV hose replaced under warranty. The vehicle had always seemed not to run smoothly before and after hose replacement. The transmission is a myriad of issues in how it operates and its quirks. The final was the new hose failing again and something else causing the motor to run very rough and at half power. At "68,900mi." we clunkered it for a Honda. How about that for value retention?

  • This is a Great Van - 2002 Mazda MPV

I love this van. Ive had a 94 Villager for 8 years and this is a big improvement. Its so much fun to drive. Its smooth, quiet, has plenty of power, handles very nimbly, and Im getting good gas mileage. The 9 speaker stereo system is terrific. Its a smaller van and I dont need to carry 7 people most of the time, but the very flexible space is useful for big items or for stretching out on long trips.

Test drove, plan to buy in summer. New engine is wonderful addition to already well concieved design. The right size for parking, carrying stuff and exploring. With or without the kids.

  • Too many mechanical problems - 2002 Mazda MPV

The 3.0l engine and 5 speed gives the MPV a great drive. Fit and finish is good. But at 60,000 miles I have needed to replace ignition coils, have had numerous transmission problems and underside of the hood has rusted into swiss cheese. My MPV also seems to wreck rear tires, has a small coolant leak and the door locks dont work anymore. Exhaust fell apart at 40,000 miles. I expect to have problems with an older vehicle, but have never had problems like this with anything Ive ever owned before. I love the car, but not as much as my mechanic.

  • Impressed--Car-Like Feel in a MiniVan - 2002 Mazda MPV

Searched for well over a month, made final choice of MPV LX (Price, reliability trail, consumer interest/ratings, bang for the buck -- this Mini sells itself!) Would have liked a few of the options on the ES but not the leather ..Having said that, the LX is well equipped with Luxury package and Rear air .. neat feature is rear air controls. Very stable on the highway, handles like a car...tight suspension/steering.

Test drove Hondas Odyssey, and Chyr Town&Country found for the price the MPV was a better buy. The new 3.0L V6 has enough ZOOM for the smaller sized MPV. The handling is great for a van, drives like a car. Would like to see a AWD model in the near future. Felt the Odyssey wasnt all that for the money they wanted, and the time it took to get one. Also the chyr though more on the luxurious side was way over priced.

  • I love my MPV, but... - 2002 Mazda MPV

Ive owned my 2002 MPV for almost 5.5 years now. In that time, Ive have no problems with it at all. The only times its been in the shop are for routine maintenance. But, 2 days ago, the transmission died on me while driving on a highway and heres the kicker - it only has 34,845 miles on it!

  • Not real happy with it - 2002 Mazda MPV

We should had gone with the Honda. At first it was a great van. Then we had an overheating problem. That had it in the shop 5 times. We had to take it back 3 times for the same recall. Then at 60,578 the transmission went out. Just after the warranty went out. Dealer wont fix because we 578 over on miles. Cost us $2400 to fix. Poor gas mileage about 18 hwy, 15 city.
