Overview & Reviews
When it comes to small crossover SUVs, the Mazda CX-5 is a relative newcomer. But Mazda has done an excellent job designing the CX-5, and it's quickly become one of our favorite models. Like other competitors, it offers plenty of versatility, high fuel economy and value. But the CX-5 is also uncommonly enjoyable to drive, which could very well give it the edge with car shoppers who want something a little extra from their small crossover.
Current Mazda CX-5
The five-passenger Mazda CX-5 is currently offered with two different engines: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque or a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on models with the 2.0-liter engine and front-wheel drive; a six-speed automatic is optional. All other CX-5s have a six-speed automatic.
There are three CX-5 trim levels: Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. Standard equipment for the Sport includes full power accessories, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a four-speaker sound system with a USB port. The Touring trim brings keyless ignition and entry, a color screen to the center stack, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, a power driver seat and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Grand Touring trim adds leather seat trim, automatic climate control, an upgraded audio system and automatic climate control. Popular options, depending on the trim level, adaptive xenon headlights, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, satellite radio and a navigation system.
In reviews, we've found the Mazda CX-5 nimble and enjoyable to drive. The brakes, suspension and steering are uncommonly capable, and in general the CX-5 is downright fun and confidence-inspiring to drive around corners. The 2.0-liter engine's on-paper specs won't blow you away, but there's a suitable amount of power for real-world driving.
Inside the CX-5, things are attractive, modern and functional. There are lots of high-quality materials and classy trim details to please the eye. Seating is comfortable both front and rear. The rear seat does not slide fore and aft, a handy feature some competitors offer, but it does fold easily. Furthermore, the upper trims offer a 40/20/40 split, allowing a useful amount of cargo-and-people-hauling combinations.
Used Mazda CX-5 Models
The Mazda CX-5 was introduced for 2013. It effectively replaced the now-defunct Ford Escape-based Mazda Tribute. In its first year, the CX-5 was only available with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, but in 2014 the larger, more-powerful 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine was introduced.

Upgraded from the old GT model - 2017 Mazda CX-5
By Suziesilverado - January 10 - 10:27 amI upgraded from a 2015 CX5 Grand Touring to the 2017 model for the following features: auto rear cargo hatch, much lower noise in the cabin, and rear air conditioning vents (needed in Florida). The car still handles pretty much the same and is fun to drive, although I find the new model to be a bit more sluggish in shifting gears. They need a larger engine option. I still get the same mileage- about 24.5 city and 28.6 highway (75 mph). I dont like the new front grill, cup holder placement, higher front hood which means lower visibility for short people., lac k of arm rests and the navigation system is horrid. The city assist braking system only works in very specific situations, and is not that helpful. Also the side mirror alerts are overly sensitive, and go off even when a car is maybe 8 lengths away from you. That said, I still prefer the way this car handles and the upgraded interior when compared to similarly priced competition. The sound system is pretty good, and with lower cabin noise, is pleasant to use during long drive

2014 Mazda CX-5 Touring - 2014 Mazda CX-5
By cbrianflynn - January 9 - 5:13 pmAfter test driving all of the competitors (Ford, Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Subaru, Hyundai), I settled on a 2014 CX-5 Touring to replace a 2001 VW Jetta Wagon. I was tempted by the Sport model, but the larger engine in the Touring and GT is much peppier for passing. Ive had the vehicle now for about 3 months and do not regret my decision. The performance is more than adequate, handling is pretty good and gas mileage has been better than my VW and more than acceptable. I drive long distances a couple of times a week and have enjoyed the cruise control. Overall, its a solid and fun care to drive, with plenty of room for hauling kids, gear, etc. Perfect for a small family.

Great CUV for Money and Great Gas Mileage - 2014 Mazda CX-5
By ericdanzas - January 5 - 10:09 amI looked at most of the CUV in this catregory and test drove them all (and rented a few while on business) I even looked at a couple of hybrids (C-Max and Prius V). I have owned a lot of Hondas over the years and thought I would buy the CRV but I was disappointed Honda did not move to a 6 speed transmission in the last update and just stretched the 5 speed gears to get better gas mileage. I decided on the Mazda and could not be happier. The ride is definitely on the sporty side (stiffer than most) but fun to drive. The MPG are truly outstanding and the Mazda looks more expensive then it actually is.

Towing with CX5 Touring Model (with 5000 miles) - 2013 Mazda CX-5
By kokenfarm - September 27 - 10:11 amI tow a Waverunner (1500lbs) with my CX5 and it does fine. Went from TN to WI round trip and got 24 miles per gal.while pulling. The SUV does fine pulling the Waverunner in and out of the water. With tow wiring installed the BSM does not work which is to bad. The tow wiring kit has been installed correctly. The Reese type 3 trailer hitch does not rattle while driving. The first hitch installed rattle terribly at 2300 RPMs. Initially my highway gas mileage was lower than expected when not towing (was around 30 mpg), but that is improving as I add mileage; currently getting 33 mpg. The CX5 has plenty of umph you just have to put your foot into it, especially when towing.

Best car Ive ever had - 2014 Mazda CX-5
By dlobrien1980 - September 21 - 5:38 amI bought my 2014 Mazda CX-5 Touring back in May of 2013. I used to be a Dodge guy all the way, but my best friend, who runs a Mazda dealership, introduced me to this ride. I am a heavy commuter, 100 miles a day, and have already put 20,000 miles on it. I have not had one single problem and have had great gas mileage. It is a fun to drive car and a safe ride for me, my wife, and our 14 month old son. Decent cargo room, and the 2014 has that 2.5 liter engine, giving it a boost over the 2.0 from 2013. Im looking forward to Mazdas reliability to get me through years of commuting, because I do A LOT of driving. I highly reccommend!

Great Surprise - 2013 Mazda CX-5
By karqueen - September 12 - 10:21 amI purchased my CX-5, 9,000 miles ago. Its the base model 6 speed manual. I love it, much more responsive than the automatic I test drove. The 6 speed and clutch are better than my old Honda Accord. I have a lead foot and avg. 30.5 MPG overall, and my brothers just hate me for that. I love the cloth material they used, the stock radio sounds very good. Great handling for for an SUV, a bit slow, but not that bad if you get the 6 speed manual. I get 415 miles between fill ups in the Los Angeles traffic.

Fantastic Car - 2016 Mazda CX-5
By andrewba - September 12 - 7:22 amReplaced my 2013 Mazda CX-5 GT for the new 2016 CX-5 GT model. The latest model is a HUGE improvement over the old model. Interior feels high class with soft touch materials throughout the cabin. I got the Titanium Grey with White Leather interior and this combination is amazing, makes you feel like you are in a higher class vehicle. All the tech features such as lane departure and radar/lasers are a nice improvement and work great. The entertainment touch screen system is higher resolution and much faster and more intuitive to use. Also the wipers are dead silent in this car. The Bose speaker system is clear with high bass. Overall, its sound proofing is noticeable over the old model.

BEWARE MAZDA! Bad! - 2013 Mazda CX-5
By bluzone2 - September 11 - 9:28 pmCross shopped all the high-efficiency small AWDs. Mazda was a little more expensive but "appeared" to have more amenities. Appearances are deceiving. I bought a fully loaded GT CX-5 with everything but a NAV, based on reviews of the NAV. After 6500 miles that pretty sky blue paint has more white zits than a teenager, the leather is like paper, the "Bose" speakers sound like a discount house box speaker, and I cant get the fuel efficiency higher than 26.0 on interstate driving. Mazda, by way of your dealer, will not stand behind its product.

Decent but Disappointed - 2014 Mazda CX-5
By kewlcanuck - September 4 - 6:01 pmHaving driven the CX5 for a year I must say Mazda needs to make some changes in my opinion. Handling is very good, fuel mileage is good for the 2.5 and power is pretty decent. Seats are comfortable and driving position has good visibility. Overall not a terrible choice but could be a lot better for the price. Will be looking for a replacement in the next few months.
