  • Nice car, bad transmission - 1999 Mazda 626
    By -

Very nice and comfortable family sedan. Gets over 30mpg. Down side, auto transmission failed at 80,000 miles and cost $3500 to replace at dealer and still is not right. Due to possible design flaw, transmission overheats during extended highway use causing failure. Dont buy unless it has a transmission cooler in front of radiator.

We have made our final payment on the zoom/zoom and we only have 59K hassel free miles.Thanx to Edmunds we researched and paid for a reliable auto. Ours has 130 ponies bridled to a left-leg flexor and feel this combo is the most fun, cost conscience way to get around.

  • Much better than people think - 2002 Mazda 626

I have had several cars from compact to midsize cars not one of them could do what the 626 4 cylinder can do; drive from Raleigh NC to Philly Pa. on one tank of gas with gas to spare. I admit the car somewhat sluggish when pulling off but accelerates great after you are moving. The interior is nice but the seats could use lumbar support for longer drives.

  • Good deal for the money - 2000 Mazda 626

I purchased this car at a year old and have put about 24K miles in two years. This car has shifting problems (a clunk) when slowing down from a slow speed which has been previously reviewed. Wind noise is a bit aggravating at high speed. Fuel economy, power (nice power!), driving stability (up to about 80-85 mph....the car tends to liftfrom the road at higher speeds, so... dont speed!), handling and fit and finish are comparable to my 95 Camry and to two Hondas I have had. Nice stereo. Overall good bang for the buck if you dont have luxury car bucks.

  • Great valure - 1999 Mazda 626

Although it has absolutely now power in the 4 cyl. It has been very reliable. Besides oil and gas I have spent no money on the car. I put lots of miles on the car and it still runs well. same features as camry or accord at much lower price. Could look more sporty.

  • Not too Shabby - 1999 Mazda 626

At times I wish I could buy another car only because I like to have a new car all the time (but Im not rich) Maybe its not as stylish as others but its not a bad looking car I have spruced it up a bit with a spoiler, added wood trim around dash, radio, shifter also updated the grill with the 2000 model grill (BIGGER Mazda logo) and added some chrome molding around front and rear bumpers and it looks great. Next a nice set of rims and that should be all. Otherwise no real complaints, replaced timing belt, brakes and 2 sensors (normal stuff)

  • I love it - 1999 Mazda 626

I love my 1999 Mazda 626! I drove it home 100 miles the first night I owned it and fell in love with it! I purchased it to replace my 1992 Accord that bit the dust. My friends love the swinging air vents. The car runs great and looks decent for Mazda styling. I never expected to be so satisfied with it!

  • Not bad for the money - 1999 Mazda 626

Bought this car used in 2006 for $4900 and had 60,000 miles on it. Now have 104,000 miles. No real problems, just normal maintenance. 4cyl has very little power, and gas mileage isnt that good (22 mpg) considering the lack of performance. I can see the Ford influences, what a shame. Thought I was getting a Japanese car. Should have done my homework. Bought for daughter to train on, kind of a bumper car if you know what I mean.

  • Good car - 2000 Mazda 626

I bought my 2000 626 July of 2004, and it has been a good car. I get 31 MPG on each tank so that is nice with gas prices on the rise. The only issue we have had is with the brakes wearing out too quickly, and the shop replaced them for free so that could have been the mechanics error. Overall a great car. I had the 2000 Toyota Camry and the 626 isnt too far off. The 4 cylinder is a little weak on the pick up, but the gas mileage makes up for it a bit.

  • Comes up short but ... - 2000 Mazda 626
    By -

My 2000 626ES was purchased instead of the Honda or Toyota based on price. The car handles great, rides nice, but the engine is too buzzy and quite underpowered. I thought I could get used to that, but I long for more power without seeing the tach at 6000 rpm. The interior looks like a million bucks and I dont think anybody makes a better one in this price range. The transmission is easily the worst feature of the car with rough shifts and an annoying tendancy to slam into gear after coasting. I thought I may have just gotten a bad transmission but after it failed and was replaced by an equally bad shifting transmission I think it is just a bad design.
