  • 30K MPY & 25 mpg - 2000 Mazda 626

Weve had our Chestnut 5 spd ES for 1.5 years and put on 45,000 miles. (We have a 93 & a 97 in the family as well.) I thought it would get better mileage than the auto but apparently the final gear ratio on the Automatic OD must be higher, (about 3700 rpm at 75 mph; which it will do all day w/o complaint). No lack of punch off the line however and the tires show it. Feels heavier yet less solid in the curves than my 84 Saab 900 (which got 30.5 mpg) but is so much better

  • Good Family Car - 2001 Mazda 626

Ive been fortunate enough not to have the various problems listed by other owners on this site. Any car (even the allegedly bulletproof Camrys and Accords) can have issues. My 626 is reliable, handles well, and has been a good car for the money. I would seriously consider another Mazda product in the future. It has all of the features of the competition for less. Plus, you dont see one at every stop light (such as the aforementioned Camrys and Accords). I cant vouch for everyone that left the plant, but mine has been great.

  • Transmission Woes - 1998 Mazda 626
    By -

I will never buy another 626 or mazda for that matter. The transmission had always been extrememly jerky, defeating the purpose of having an automatic, and I was told by a number of different dealerships that there was nothing wrong with it. Finally, an honest Mazda employee told me that it was jerky by design and there was nothing I could do about it. Not to my surprise, the transmission went out at 50,000 only to be replaced with an equally shotty transmission. The only thing I like about this car is the swing option on the vents.

  • A good car - 1999 Mazda 626

I love this car for following reasons 1. Comfort. I love the interior comforts and the features that it has like Swing Vents 2. Driving. The acceleration was good. Pick up was not comparable to Chrysler V6 but not bad either. 3. I have driven this car over the NH mountains and never had issues. 4. Had to recharge the AC at about 97kmiles and timing belt replaced and after that the AC is fine without issues Regular oil changes , 90000 service, done. Recently had to replace the transmission hose as it had some problems.

  • Good value - 2002 Mazda 626

Took advantage of some dealer incentives such as $2500 rebate which made the deal! Nice styling, very clean, well laid out interior. Gets me where I want to go in comfort.

  • Excellent car for the money - 2000 Mazda 626

My 2000 626 LX is coming up on 90,000 trouble free miles. All I have ever done is normal maintenance. Although some more horsepower might be nice, I like the great gas mileage, excellent handling, and excellent reliability. It is a fun car to drive. This was my first Mazda and I have already bought a 2nd Mazda. Great Car!

This has been a great car, it has not cost one cent in repairs, handles very well, has plenty of power, and is very quiet. I am a Mazda fan, as this is my 3rd Mazda and I have no complaints about any of them. Just as good as an Accord or Camry for a lot less money (although the resale value is not as good). I cant wait to buy the new 6, but will have to wait till this one is paid for.

  • I got a lemon - 1999 Mazda 626
    By -

I bought my 1999 626 new in 1999. At only 50 miles I had to bring it in because it needed an entirely new timing belt system. It only got worse after that. My car was in and out of the shop so often that I could have claimed under the FL lemon law if it had been in the shop one more day. I think part of the problem was the inadequate dealer service shop and bad luck. I had bought this car based on its reliability. I am trading tomorrow and I wont miss my car.

  • Typical Automatic Issues? - 1998 Mazda 626
    By -

Bottom line is I love the car. I must. Ive owned it for over 10 years, and am only now deciding to sell. But, transmission #3 is issuing signals, and the pre-cat went out years ago. The pre-cat triggers the chk eng light, then the light goes out in a couple of weeks. Not really an issue, just an annoyance. We also lost a lot of weather-stripping around the doors. I re-hung it. But I think it needs more than just an adhesive to really do the job. After two years, we also have two dash bulbs out. Makes it a pain to use the heater when you cant real the dial. But I still have the car, so it isnt all bad. A very fun car to drive, even with low power.

  • Gotta love the growl - 1999 Mazda 626

Solid car. 2.4L V-6 GROWLS...and I love it! Lots of room inside, fun to drive 5-speed, simple but sharp styling.
