This Year's Model Updates:

Last year's integrated child safety seat has mysteriously disappeared from press kit and dealer order sheet radar. Other big news is the availability of the optional 5.2-liter V8 engine in 2WD models, and a six-cylinder that qualifies the JGC as a transitional low emission vehicle (TLEV) in California. Refinements have been made to the ABS system, entry-level cassette stereo and floor carpet fit. In January, a sporty TSi model debuted with monotone paint, special aluminum wheels and other goodies.

Pros:
  • Lightweight unibody construction, excellent on and off-road manners, optional V-8, standard ABS, dual airbags, lots of standard equipment
Cons:
  • Spare tire hogs cargo area, engines hog gas, not as roomy inside as some competitors, price climbs rapidly as options are added

  • Not to bad!! - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I bought this Jeep used with 128,000 miles. This one has the Inline 6. I have only put a couple hundred miles on it but it seems to run great. I cant believe how good the body is holding up. No exterior rust yet. The only issue i have with it is the transmission has a very slight leak. When I park I see one or two drops of tranny fluid on the ground. After a tranny flush and new seal, no more leak. In the past I have never been a Chrysler fan and still am not. But this vehicle so far is my exception. I like it and I could NOT pass up the deal I got on it. So far, no major complaints. Overall satisfied. I know several people that got 300,000 miles on the inline 6. Hope I do also.

Bought this car used with 22000 miles and have driven 44000 since then. Ride is very comfortable on long road trips as well as in urban setting. Fuel economy on the highway is good at about 23 miles per gallon but get only about 17 in an urban-highway mix. Car has had no mechanical problems since I bought it. This car has the V-8 engine and it is very powerful - that probably is why gas mileage is as it is. i would recommend this model to anyone interested and particularly for off- road and hauling (trailer).

  • Will never own another Jeep - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Purchased new in Jan 1997, ran out of gas Feb 1997 due to inoperative gas gauge. Brakes, replaced, windshield leak, repreated visits to dealership to no avail. Currently in 2002, new brakes again $400.00. March, transmission went. Since truck was over 3 years, no help from Daimler- Chrsyler; cost $4,000.00. August 2002, turn signal, winshield wiper computer gone; $200 repair. Sept 2002, fuel pump in the gas tank had to be replaced; $500 repair. It seems that Daimler has done little to improve Chryslers product. If you plan to purchase a JEEP, buyer beware.

  • Love this Jeep!!! - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Cant believe the deal I got on this Jeep! 97000 miles and its running stronger than I could have asked. Fuel economy is amazing compared to my fathers 4.3 V-6 GMC, I get 25-28mpg on the highway! Handles like a dream, and the Quadratrac is great. There are some squeaks and little rattles, but nothing overly noticeable. Wonderful quality. Love the leather seats, they are soft and comfortable. Tons of room, Im 62" and dont need the drivers seat all the way back. I love this Jeep more every day. I am very confident it will go over 200kmi!

I bought it from a private owner. It has approximately 130,000 miles. Drives well. It does not have very good mpg. As it is a v8. I have put brakes on it and new a. C. I feel it is a reliable vehicle, but with the unsure gas prices, it is scary.

grand cherokee has been reliable for the most part.the only major repair ive done is to replace the fuel pump & regulator assembly.I pull a boat with it frequently and the 4 liter engine is a little week for towing, but the performance of the 4 liter has been very good to excellent. The four wheel drive performs great.Ive been very pleased with this vehicle, in fact, my wife and I agree that its the best vehicle weve ever had.We love this vehicle!

  • Good thing I got a warranty! - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I thought I was getting the perfect used car: less than 70,000 miles and a 3,000 mile powertrain warranty. Turns out Ive needed to use the warranty three times already - once to replace the PCM, another to replace a bad steering gear, and now to replace bearings in the front differential - all withing the first month! Im scared of what will come down the road. Its too bad - I love the truck and its very good at what it does. It looks great in silver, the leather interior is fantastic and it gets 22-23 mpg at 65mph. Off-road nothing can touch it for the money! If you want one, research the maintenance history and make sure the TSBs were done!
