This Year's Model Updates:

Jeep expands the Grand Cherokee lineup for 2006 with the addition of a range-topping Overland trim level. It's been fitted with more standard luxury features and 5.7-liter V8. New standard features on all models include stability control and one-touch up-down front windows. Newly optional on the Laredo is the Quadra-Trac II four-wheel-drive system and an off-road package.

Pros:
  • Three available engines, excellent off-road ability, balanced handling, simple controls.
Cons:
  • Low-quality interior materials, small backseat, poor gas mileage with the big V8, ride can be bouncy over ruts.

  • Better ride - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This my 4th Jeep Grand Cherokee. I find the ride much smoother. The steering appears to be easier to handle. I think the back seat leg room should be widened by moving the back seats back so that a taller person has more leg room, especially if front seats are moved back. Glad to see the emergency brakes are now on drivers side instead of passenger side. Overall I am happier with this 2006 than my 2002 Jeep, hope I still feel this way by this time next year.

  • Bad to the bone - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have had my SRT8 for two weeks now and I have never driven a more fun car in my life. My only complaint is rear seat legroom. But since Ill probably never sit there it is of little concern for me. The gas mileage is not great but I didnt buy it for fuel economy. The styling is a real head turner. I can barely get in the thing without someone wanting to know what it has under the hood once they hear the key hit the ignition. I am throughly pleased and I have no regrets about trading my Yukon Denali elephant for this street beast.

  • Not bad but definitely not Honda quality - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

With the V8 this vehicle is a pretty decent overall package. Its definitely much more refined than past JGCs, however it would be ideal if it had a smooth revving multi-valve engine. Good ride, good sight lines, just wish the build quality was better. I most likely will not buy another JGC as there are better available SUVs especially from the Japanese brands.

I have a love/hate relationship with my Jeep. I love the style, comfort, and features. But the reliability of this vehicle is extremely disappointing. I do drive quite a bit, but there have been so many things break on this Jeep that should not go bad. Starters, ball bearings, water pumps, and hoses... I cant afford to keep this Jeep. Its always twice as much to service and fix than anything else.

  • So far, So good - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This is my first Jeep purchase. Traded an Acura TL & a 1999 Chev Tahoe so I wanted an SUV that performed close to the TL and had the same amenities, ie, bluetooth, leather, comfort, etc. Also needed the towing capacity of the Tahoe. So far it has meet all my expecations. Rides nice, has everything my TL had except for the navigation system. With the HEMI the jeep is quicker than the TL and handles almost as well. Also drove the 4 runner & the Jeep handled better and the interior of the 4 runner actually seemed cheaper than the jeep. So far, so good on the reliablity. Driven over 8,500 miles and 3 long road trips. No problems! Of course the gas mileage stinks, but expected with a V-8.

  • Terrible Product! - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Where should I start? First, let me say that this is one fast SUV, but I hate the hesitation is has when you hit the gas. Like its thinking, should I go or should I not. Then the rattling all over the place. This is a one year old car! This should not happen to any vehicle. The fuel economy is worse then probably an 1974 Caddy. The leather is beginning to show wear. Tranny had some shifting problems and this noise it makes around 40 mph. Seems the quality is just not there. Trading this joke in for a BMW X5. And as for speed and power, doesnt really feel that 420 ponys are pulling at times. I just dont get Jeep (mopar) Great idea, but its like they didnt follow through at end.

I think the 5.7 is a blast to drive. Handles better than my 06 STS. Softer ride also. Gas bills, we all have them. Tell the old muscle car guys about gas. They will tell you the same. OH WELL.

  • First Jeep owned - recommended by my son. - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Averaging 21 mpg on highway -- very pleased with that. Our Jeep is very easy to slip into -- not like other SUVs we looked at. We dont need running boards or a ladder to get in to our Jeep. Ride is perfectly acceptable -- quite smooth in fact. Heated seats do not cycle on and off in the heat mode -- steady warmth -- nice here in Wisconsin. Killer stereo system! We were very happy to find ours with every option imaginable expect for a sunroof which we did not want anyway.

  • Great Bang for the buck - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The JGCL with the 5.7 hemi is a great ride! Far better than years past with far better build quality. Huge amounts of power, great AWD system and tons of extras make this a great value. But only after the 0% 60 APR financing and huge discounts the dealers are giving. Stickered at $42k, selling for about $33-34k. The sticker its very expensive but $7k off the mark makes these a great ride! BTW you can get 20MPG with the hemi if you lock it on the highway at 65mph and are not climbing. Otherwise its 10-17mpg, depending on the mix. I dont do a lot of highway and have seen it as low as 11.5 mpg for a whole tank.

  • Dont buy Chrysler products - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The car started off fine but is now troubled with electrical problems. The car constantly gives a transmission over temp alarm even after start up. The ESM is messing up causing erratic shifting. Ever since the n23 recall I have a service 4wd system alarm that will show every start up and not let me engage 4 low. To replace the ESM its going to cost over $700 and is such a common problem it should be recalled. This is my last Chrysler product I will ever buy.
