Overview & Reviews
A 5.9-liter V8 making 245 horsepower and 345 pound-feet torque powers the Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited, making it the mightiest of all Jeeps. With the addition of the 5.9, the putrid Orvis model dies. Two new colors and "next-generation" airbags round out the changes.
- Lightweight unibody construction, excellent on and off-road manners, optional V-8, standard ABS, dual airbags, lots of standard equipment
- Spare tire hogs cargo area, engines hog gas, not as roomy inside as some competitors, price climbs rapidly as options are added

Chrysler Engineers take notice - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Jeeepie - March 11 - 10:00 amOk this is a fine car to own. It looks like a million bucks on the outside, Has excellent driver ergodynamics, and room to transport anything or pull anything within reason. But somewhere chrysler fell short when it came to maintenance. Come on guys you should not have to drill a hole in the frame of the 5.2L vehicle to unclog the a/c drain. Poor bearing life on front differential case

JEEP?? or CHEEP?? - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By AJS2 - March 7 - 10:00 amI dont usually buy Domestic, and now I know why... While generally reliable, the gas mileage is poor,I am now inundated with repairs,9 At 105,000..and the fit out and comfort is not nearly as nice as the competitors at Toyota,or Nissan. IF I had to o it over again, the extra 5k for the Import is well worth it.

Not too bad - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Sledsoul - March 7 - 2:00 amI had a 96 and thought I would get another.Replaced waterpump, sway barlinks replaced 3 times and front end still clunks. It has great power 5.2 litre. I am thinking of getting rid of it with 74000 miles. I had electrical go out a few times also. An thinking of an expedition or tahoe. Need something larger.

My best buy ever! - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Carlosky - February 21 - 2:00 amI bought my car on July 1998, brand new. It is now almost 5 years since I bought it and it has 130,000 miles and counting. No problems what so ever, no repairs, no nothing! Comfort, reliability, everything still works as on the first day! If I change it, it will be for another brand new Grand Cherokee Laredo.

Disappointing Reliability - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By hjhartii - February 10 - 10:00 amI bought this gorgeous vehicle at one year old with only 15k miles. It was great at first, but since then Ive spent over $2,500 in major repairs including AC compressor, AC accumulator, heater core, and rear engine seal (100,000 miles). Now the catalytic converter is going to cost $750 to replace! This SUV gets lots of miles put on it, but they are gentle miles. Ive been disappointed by the repair costs.

Red Jeep - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By DP - December 29 - 10:00 amAfter purchasing my Jeep, I had the vehicled into the dealer shop three times during the warranty period because of a leaky transmission. It continued to leak after the warranty ran out. The leak was small, but kept a mess on my garage floor. I maintained the fluid level. At about 85,000 the transmission failed. The vehicle has been back to the transmission shop 5 times because of leaks. It continues to leak.

steady and reliable - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By John Giuffrida - December 16 - 10:00 pmMy 98 had 2 miles when I first sat in it; it now has 131k. I have not put a penny into engine work yet and she still starts on the first try. I am just this year being plagued by some undercarriage rusting and mechanical difficulties. This has been by far the most steady and reliable car Ive ever owned. I cringe at the thought of selling her.

worst vehicle owned.... - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Mikew_98 - November 2 - 10:00 amIn the year and a half I have owned the vehicle, I have spent in excess of $2600 in repairs on it. Drivetrain is great and very reliable. Do not get one with and bells and whistles, it will only frustrate you to have to try and deal with Chrysler to get anything on it fixed =/

5.9 LTD...Rare for a good reason! - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Cowbell - October 28 - 10:00 amMy relationship with my 5.9 LTD is Love and Hate. Within 5 hours of purchasing it I was stranded on the side of the freeway with a blown radiator and fan switch! I probably should have returned it, but unfortunatly I loved the plush black leather, chrome exhasut and roaring speed! A year later I am $4000 deep in repairs, and my sunroof is unrepariable unless I want to by a new one for $1600... ouch! I shouldnt have cancelled the extended warranty..

Best Vehicle Ive Ever Owned - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Rblake - October 24 - 7:23 pmI bought this as my first SUV in March 2007 with 113k Miles for $3900. Dad always said 4WD was just something else to pay for when it breaks down, but after driving this in WI snow storms, Im sold!. My Jeeps 4WD is magical and this is by far the best vehicle Ive ever owned. The only non-routine maintenance Ive encountered is: the rear wiper doesnt work, the rear hatch support struts are beginning to fail in cold temps and Ive had to replace the yr old battery shortly after I purchased the vehicle. The towing package pulls my trailer around perfectly. I cant wait to pull the boat & camper this summer. Im officially a Jeep Guy. My next vehicle will be a 01 or newer Grand Cherokee.
