This Year's Model Updates:

Jeep expands the Grand Cherokee lineup for 2006 with the addition of a range-topping Overland trim level. It's been fitted with more standard luxury features and 5.7-liter V8. New standard features on all models include stability control and one-touch up-down front windows. Newly optional on the Laredo is the Quadra-Trac II four-wheel-drive system and an off-road package.

Pros:
  • Three available engines, excellent off-road ability, balanced handling, simple controls.
Cons:
  • Low-quality interior materials, small backseat, poor gas mileage with the big V8, ride can be bouncy over ruts.

  • Love it! - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Ive had my Grand Cherokee SRT-8 for about 2 years. It is so much fun! It is not a daily driver of course, with low gas mileage, but for trips to the mountains, or beach there is no better performance and utility value out there. The engine is just incredible and the sound of the exhaust is awesome. Ive only had troubles with the electrical windows which were fixed. I dont think well see a vehicle like this, with 425HP, available in the auto world much longer, Im glad I have mine.

  • its a [non-permissible content removed] good jeep - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

i have this jeep with now 120,000 miles on it withe 4.7 v8. its been very reliable so far just the regular maintenance. my only complain is the passenger side airbag sensor light is on for a long time now. i drive it like crazy everyday. im lead foot driver so i only average 13 miles a gallon doing 60%city and 40% highway. by lead foot i mean full throttle while accelerating if you want this vehicle to be reliable put castrol synthetic oil every 3000 miles or 3 months whatever comes first. jeep pulls great with a lot of low end torque. i will say i does got some minor electrical issues. dah!!! its a jeep it gonna always have some of those.

  • Good looks...bad ride - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Really like the looks of the Jeep, but BIG disappointment with the ride. Not very smooth and seems to "wobble & shimmy" on the road...worse when you are on open highway and very windy. Wish I had had a better test drive, would have thought twice about buying. Looking to trade now!

  • Now I am happy to be rid of it - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I leased this vehicle for the fact of always wanting a jeep. After 5 months I wanted out of the lease. Poor gas mileage, small interior room, poor build quality. I guess this is a testament to the outgoing Chrysler owners. The truck had 2 transmission problems in the time I had it and 2 rear window issues. Loved to have a truck and 4WD. Needless to say i am a Very Happy Honda 2010 Pilot Owner now.

  • I Love it, but... - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Many publications rated Acura MDX and Nissan Pathfinder better than the 06 JGC. We preferred the ride of the JGC but bought an MDX. Two years later, we traded the MDX in for the JGC Overland in order to pull a 26 trailer/RV. The JGC had a noticeably smaller cargo area in the hatch and a tad smaller backseat, but that aside absolutely LOVE driving our JGC... BUT, there have been problems. In 2008 our powersteering pump went (under warranty), in 2009 our starter went (not covered), and both the hood and the hatch hydraulics are shot. Chrysler has a reputation of being the poorest North American manufacturer and this is apparent as these issues shouldnt happen in a newer vehicle.

  • CD Changer issues - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

Overall I really like my Jeep. It offers a smooth comfortable ride. All controls are easily accessible and operation is intuitive. There is one troublesome issue. At purchase I upgraded to a 6 CD changer. Change is the key word - we are about to install the 4th one in 5 months. Im told the specified unit is new to the 2006 model year and "a lot of units have been replaced". The SUV is great, but skip the CD changer upgrade.

  • Quite a looker... - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I had researched this car for about year before taking the plunge! Well worth it! I bought mine in black and it gets a lot of looks. Unfortunately, the cops like it as well! ACK! People always mistake it for an Escalade or Range Rover if they have never seen one. I smile every time I look at it and love that not everyone in Atlanta has one, like the BMW models!

  • Balanced On/Off road - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

This 5.7 Liter Hemi really hauls! Unfortunately, this power does come at the expense of gas, where I average 12-14 MPG in mixed driving conditions. This might be more tolerable if the gas tank was larger. The engine is quiet and provides plenty of power, the transmission is smooth, suspension is excellent, road noise is inaudible (an improvement from earlier models), and off-road capabilities are unmatched for its class. This car is the perfect balance of power, refinement, and on and off road capabilities. Dependability will be determined; this has been a sore spot for Jeep in the past. Interior materials could be improved, plastic inside the car is abundant and cheap looking.

  • I am Enjoying My 2006 Jeep - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I had a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Laredo. It was my favorite car until I started to have problems with transmission. I hope they have fixed that problem, but I am back to try it again. So far it is great

  • Will never own another Jeep! - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

Ive had this vehicle since February of 2007 and it has been just an averagely okay vehicle. It started having non-stop problems that most mechanics couldnt diagnose. The worst was when it would shudder/shake, lurch like it was shifting from overdrive to 2nd and just shut off while driving. Not safe! It took 4 visits to 2 different mechanics to finally figure out the problem and only after I told them to humor me and check something that I had found after hours of researching the symptoms online. Lights randomly come on and then go off without registering any codes. I have driven this across the country and never got more than 18mpg. I will never own another Jeep/Chrysler ever again!
