This Year's Model Updates:

A 5.9-liter V8 making 245 horsepower and 345 pound-feet torque powers the Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited, making it the mightiest of all Jeeps. With the addition of the 5.9, the putrid Orvis model dies. Two new colors and "next-generation" airbags round out the changes.

Pros:
  • Lightweight unibody construction, excellent on and off-road manners, optional V-8, standard ABS, dual airbags, lots of standard equipment
Cons:
  • Spare tire hogs cargo area, engines hog gas, not as roomy inside as some competitors, price climbs rapidly as options are added

good reliable vehicle, stops at every gas station.gets around great in snow and ice rear wiper has never worked properly.

  • Premature Failures - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

33000 miles- The fuel pump failed. 35000 miles- The power steering pump failed. 46000 miles the sway bar disconnected. 52000 miles the IPS sensor failed. 70000 miles the tramsmision pump and torque converter failed. The remote control memory, door locks, power mirrors and seat controls have failed roughly 4 times. What really got me is when the repair facility was familiar with the failure mode each time. You mean its normal to loose a fuel pump at 33,000 miles? Oh, and the "certified" service department local to me is a joke. 3 transmission repairs, and 2 of them returned a vehicle with loose transfer case bolts?

Nothing slams you back in your seat like the torque of this jeep!! Performance and comfort make this a dream to drive. Fulltime four wheel drive provides great on/off road traction. This jeep will blow by anything but the gas station! Overall its a goodtime but good ole american build quality will come back to haunt you. New rear end, steering box and sway bar bushings have been replaced in the past 6 months due to "standard 80,000 mile wear and tear." My verdict, amazing vehicle so long as you buy a good extended warranty and dont mind filling up once a week.

  • Be aware of your gas tank - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

My husband and I were rear ended and our 1998 Grand Cherokee exploded on impact. The gas tank ruptured and the car was engulfed in flames within seconds. We both jumped out and were lucky enough not to have our children with us. The damage to the back of the vehicle was minimal. Please be careful if you drive this vehicle. The gas tank is right under the rear fender. We were lucky to escape and have the most frightening pictures to prove this. Daimler Chrysler "respectfully declined" to participate in the costs we incurred and claimed no product liability. If you get hit from behind, get out of the car till you know its safe. Lynn Friedman

  • Not so reliable - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Gas gauge shows incorrect readings, gear changes are not smooth. Changes in 2WD/4WD takes times.

Generally, this is a good, reliable automobile. Over 96000 miles with no reliability problems. The transmission shift points are questionable. One odd experience that cost me 800 dollars involved a front drive shaft that all of a sudden developed a leaky joint because it was too short. This happened after replacing the front diff yoke and the corresponding seal (the latter several times). Of course, nobody owned up to any wrong doing or design issues.

The only problem I have had is the AC, which was killed due to Florida heat. The seats are soft and the interior design is done well. The 4x4 works great. I bought it new and plan to buy another Jeep.

I find the Jeep fun to drive even on long trips( weve been coast to coast twice in it).

  • GREAT 5.9 - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have an Acura and a 5.9 Jeep and the Jeep is much plusher and less troublesome than the Acura. Both have the same miles 50-60k. The rpm on the Jeep could be higher to get a little more power it shifts at 4450rpm. ItÂ’s a fun car to drive and the only serious drawback is mileage -- 12.5 to 20.
