This Year's Model Updates:

Isuzu juggles minor standard and optional equipment for 1999, making items from last year's S V6 preferred equipment package standard on the LS, and last year's LS equipment standard on a new trim level called LSE.

Pros:
  • Stylish interior, rugged exterior, roomy rear seat.
Cons:
  • Disconnected steering feel, lousy 4WD button placement.

  • Looks good... but very problematic - 1999 Isuzu Rodeo

It looked and felt good when I bought it (used) a year ago. But then the problems kept on coming. As much as I liked the look and ride... it kept finding its way into the shop. This thing is NOT durable at all. Its an SUV alright... but you cant treat it like one.

Two weeks of owning this SUV and the infamous EGR code came up. I tried everything, cleaning out the intake holes, an intake fume flush kit and finally changed the EGR valve. 160.00 NOPE, and then the fuel gauge problem where it would drop to 0 and the light would flash. So I took the dash apart and placed black tape over both of them. Voila. No more lights ever again and back to happy motoring.

I bought my Rodeo from Carmax with 16k on it after a year. Until recently I have had only minor problems-the cassette deck would not eject (fixed under warranty); the check engine light came on at 25k(took it to the dealer only to find out that the gas cap was not screwed on past 3 clicks more than 9 months before - before I purchased the vehicle); when unlocking the rear door with the key, I broke the lock. Then the rear window would intermittently jam - this one took at least 6 dealer trips to fix. Now at 65k, the ABS has failed and the check engine light is on. I want to buy a toyota truck.

Bought used in 3/05 & had problems right away. Fuel gauge broken, ABS light always on, rear lights all messed up, & hard down-shifting. All were fixed at the dealerships expense at the tune of $800.00! I have replaced rear wiring harnesses & sway bar links for $300.00. Was told by great garage of unusual 1/2-inch sludge on transmission magnet ... very bad sign of huge transmission problem. This was discovered while in the shop for a new solenoid. Seems like problem after problem. Shame, because its a roomy, fast ride. Seats are hard and the spare squeaks all the way down the road on the back tailgate. Would not recommend. Not worth the money or hassles.

  • Mediocre - 1999 Isuzu Rodeo

For the price, this was not a bad buy. Got a 0.9% int rate too. Not the best vehicle, but also not the worst that Ive owned. I had more problem with a 96 Ford Explorer than with this Rodeo.

  • do not buy... duplicate - 1999 Isuzu Rodeo

again, the first 3 years... minor problems. new brakes and rotars after 20000mi, new transfer case, broken hood release, and serp belt shortly therafter. at about 50000mi,the enging burned all the oil at about 1000mi. after months of complaints (and gallons of oil) i got a new engine, which leaked all sorts of fluids. got rid of it that week and curse the company since.

  • Many problems to follow my purchase - 1999 Isuzu Rodeo
    By -

The day after I purchased this SUV at 63,000 I was replacing parts. That should have been my warning, but I really liked my Isuzu. The truck has a lot of problems that maybe a handy person can fix themselves with the help of a junk yard. I have had to replace problems including both catalytic converter$, oxygen sensor, tires, brakes and rotors, cv boots, the windows dont roll up and or down, Ac, gas gauge fluctuates on a full tank will blink as if on empty and out, power steering pump broke, burns excessive oil, horrible on gas, keyless entry had to be replaced, and heat shield had to be removed. I have owned my truck for a few years, now at 126,000 mi.

  • Good value for price - 1999 Isuzu Rodeo

Good performance, fair fuel economy, fair turning radius, nice with leather, wood trim, sunroof, Premium sound. 5 speed makes it a fun SUV to drive.

  • Good on paper, but.... - 1999 Isuzu Rodeo
    By -

Going on 4 years, replaced engine under warranty (just barely), otherwise OK. Gives off very musty odor from AC (?!?), lots of creaks and rattles, loud road noise, lousy seats. Great off- road, fun to bang around in, but not reliable and not refined at all. Wouldnt buy another Isuzu.

  • good car bad problems - 1999 Isuzu Rodeo

i loved it for the first 3 yrs. lots of (real) off road in nv mtns & desert very capable off road, goes where some jeeps will not.Loud on the road. Abs sensor replaced @ 18 mo. Motor blew up @ 75000 mi. Dealer told me it was a common problem w/ Isuzu "you either get a good one, or you get a bad one" I got a bad one. lucky for me I bought the extended warrenty. took 8 wks to replace engine. There were 6 new isuzu in for new motors at the same time. WHY???
