Model Overview:

Although it wasn't around for very long, the Hyundai Veracruz could be a worthwhile choice for a crossover SUV. As with other Hyundai models, the Veracruz boasted plenty of features for a price that was typically less than the competition. On top of this, the Veracruz also provided an impressively luxurious cabin and a quiet ride that was comparable to many luxury-branded crossover SUVs.

On the downside, it came up short in terms of interior space compared to some other large crossovers, and didn't offer much in terms of design flair. Hyundai also didn't sell very many of them, so finding a used model that fits your desires might be hard. But overall, the Veracruz is worth a look for shoppers interested in a feature-packed midsize or large crossover.

Most Recent Hyundai Veracruz
The seven-seat Hyundai Veracruz was produced from 2007 through 2012. Under the hood was a 260-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 paired to a six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive was standard, with all-wheel drive optional.

Originally, Hyundai offered the Veracruz in GLS, SE and Limited trim levels. Standard feature highlights for the base GLS trim initially included 17-inch wheels, heated side mirrors, air-conditioning, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a six-speaker audio system with satellite radio. The SE was pretty similar. Major options for these trims included a sunroof, Bluetooth, heated front seats and a power driver seat. On the SE you could also get a power liftgate, leather upholstery and a premium audio system.

The Veracruz Limited came with most of the lower trims' options as standard. It also had dual-zone climate control and a power front passenger seat. Options included a navigation system and a surround-sound audio system.

Feature content largely remained the same throughout its run, although a navigation system and power liftgate became available for 2008. The following year the SE trim was dropped in favor of two optional packages available on the GLS. A rear-seat DVD entertainment system was offered for 2009 and '10 only.

When the Veracruz was introduced, it drew comparisons to luxury models rather than more pedestrian-badged competitors. The comparisons were not far-fetched. In our reviews, we found the Veracruz luxurious, well-built and very quiet on the road. Top crash test scores were another draw. On the downside, total interior cargo space and third-row rear seat room weren't quite as spacious as some competitors like the GMC Acadia. The Veracruz also looked pretty plain, which could be a turnoff for some buyers.

  • WOW - 2007 Hyundai Veracruz

We bought this after searching every maker for a 7-passenger SUV that was fun to drive, looked good, felt good, and got more than 15-17 MPG. Its not an ugly minivan/round box SUV clone, it didnt cost $50K+ like the luxury brands, and it gets 20+ MPG combined driving while taking regular gas (unlike virtually every other premium- swilling luxury SUV - thats worth another 1-2 miles per gallon if you do the math). 1000 miles in, I am amazed! It is so far an awesome vehicle and comes in cheaper than the 5-passenger Lexus RX (whose look it very conveniently resembles) - plus it outperformed the Lexus in a Washington Post auto review. Good fit and finish, great warranty.

I traded an Infiniti FX for this car. As a result, I use that as a basis to compare. Cruz has all the luxury features, is quieter, built a little better (so far), has a better ride, and the audio with the the DVD package is the best I have ever heard from a factory. Fuel economy is about the same (disappointing since it is FWD with a six speed, weighs about the same and is a bit slower.) At least it likes regular. Handling is the only negative, but the FX is a unfair comparison. Compared to Highlanders and Pilots, it is fine.

Only had it for one week & less than 500 miles, but enjoy the quiet ride and luxury touches. Plenty of room, power is decent, mileage is better than posted on sticker, very comfortable. Had some rear end noise...fixed that with a $5 can of undercoat. Paint, interior 7 exterior joints are good...seems to be built well. Never thought that I would buy a Hyundai after owning 3 Highlanders, pleasantly surprised!

  • All things considered, its not great - 2008 Hyundai Veracruz

My wife and I like the comfy seats and they are easy to adjust. Theres plenty of room all around. The layout is good and the build quality and materials on par with the Ford Edge and Saturn Outlook. Good A/C. The ride is fairly smooth and its quiet inside. We were surprised to see the gas go so fast especially in the city when it returned only 13-14 miles per gallon average. Not very good. We are not impressed with the reliability or warranty coverage either. The dealers are all unethical. They charged us for things we never needed when we brought it in for warranty items; the trans would not shift out of park and was flat bedded, dealer charged us $850 for brake pads! Poor resale!

This is a crossover with the ride of a cruse ship. The car has so many bells and whistles. Have it one week and already over 1100 miles. Finding wonderful things about it every day. Could be the best car ever.

We purchased our new Veracruz limited in July and traded in our 02 expedition eb. I really didnt think I would be happy with a smaller vehicle after driving an expedition for almost 7 years, but guess what, I am. This vehicle has more technolgy than I know what to do with. When I pass a Lexus, I dont see any difference. Maybe a lot less, but they look alike. Considering all the cuvs out there to choose from, I think this Hyundai is one of the best. Its a lot of car for the money.

  • LOVE MY VERACRUZ - 2007 Hyundai Veracruz

Purchased a Veracruz Limited AWD on Mothers Day in Sacramento. The ride is very nice overall, some jolting over potholes. Very secure feeling, and great look over the road. Great overall size, not as cramped as Santa Fe, but not as sporty as Santa Fe.Difficult decision deciding on VC or SF, both have great features. The front end is not my favorite feature, so I purchased a mask, looks great.I also purchased the gold package on emblems, looks great on Natural Khaki color.

I bought a Sonata in 2003, so I was interested in another Hyundai, but the Santa Fe was a little too small. Imagine my surprise when I saw that Hyundai had come out with the Veracruz. I absolutely love it! I have never had anyone ask me what kind of vehicle I drive before, and Ive had several people ask me about my Veracruz. It drives like a dream, and looks absolutely gorgeous. The stereo is sounds better than I can describe, and Ill definitely be subscribing to XM....Im already addicted. Hyundai youve done it again!

  • watch out expensive brands - 2008 Hyundai Veracruz

Finally Hyundai has a SUV that matches the top class in the marketplace at a price at least 25% lower for the same quality and options. Nice features, Well written operating manuals, warranty (a good package actually). Carries 7 adult passengers comfortably on any seat. Try that on "comparables" such as Pacifica, Commander, etc. Can easily carry 8 if 3rd row passengers are of normal size. Nice compartments for glasses, etc. Good quality materials used on interior decor. 6 gears forward help on economy. a happy customer albeit had it for only 3 weeks so far.

  • Great SUV - 2008 Hyundai Veracruz

Fantastic vehicle for the money. We bought the Limited and love it. Best features are the proximity key and auto open/close lift gate. The navigation system is so so but the stereo system rocks. Great head room and very comfortable for long trips. Very quiet ride with very little road noise. We test drove several other SUV makes and found them overpriced for the same features and less warranty.
