This Year's Model Updates:

The Elantra received a slight refresh for this year in the form of a new hood, deck lid, front and rear bumpers, grille, headlamps and taillights. Interior revisions include a redesigned instrument cluster, vents, center console and climate controls. The engine has been fitted with continuously variable valve timing, and it is now sold in SULEV or ULEV configurations (depending on the state in which it's purchased) which offer horsepower ratings of 138 and 132, respectively. The base GLS model now offers remote keyless entry as standard equipment, while GT models now have a Kenwood CD/MP3 audio system as standard.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultralow price tag, long warranty.
Cons:
  • Poor offset crash test score, antilock brakes available only as a package option.

  • Nice car, but could be better. - 2004 Hyundai Elantra

Bought a 2004 GT new and with the car approaching 5 years old, Im overall satisfied with the car, but... Doing the suggested, periodic maintenance has been a huge headache, mostly focusing on the dealerships. The prices for the 30k, 60k, etc. check- ups are horribly overpriced and the dealerships dont even perform what the owners manual suggests they do. Youll take your car in for a repair (like a PCV valve) and its 10 minutes of sales talk before they tell you they havent even looked at the car. Ive even had them tell me I needed a grossly overpriced cabin filter replacement only to find it missing a week later when I did it myself. Thievery or the car didnt come with one.

Handles very well, very responsive to drivers commands. Decent gas mileage. Awesome sticker price after rebates. Only 140 hp, but because the car is so light, it accelerates quickly. Very comfortable interior with perforated leather being standard. Lots of goodies installed. Fun to drive!

  • Exceptional Value and Performance - 2004 Hyundai Elantra

Test drove everything in the class, Civic, Corolla,Protege - $ for $ the Elantra won hands down!...in every category - performance, style (opinion) and value (keyless remote, 140 hp, air, pwr windows/locks, cruise control - all extra $$ on the others)..acceleration, nimble handling, standard features and the unbelievably smooth ride and silent cabin will amaze you. I first said, "No way will I buy a Hyundai," but now I recommend this vehicle to everyone - totally different than the old rusty Ponies...only problem was the thin paint (some chips) and drivers seat latch that wouldnt click in..all fixed by dealer. Other than that - smooth sailing!

  • Best all around ! - 2004 Hyundai Elantra

This is the BEST value I have ever seen! For around 14K you get Leather, Aluminun Rims, Side Airbags, CD/MP3, Disk Brakes, Sport Suspension, hallogen, computer trip, cruise control, power everything (but seats), 5 doors, good looking.... Then top that with a crazy 10 year warranty ...One more thing 5 years roadside assist. Can any one come out with something even close to this without looking at 18K? ....NOOOO.

  • Very Reliable Car at 60,000 miles - 2004 Hyundai Elantra

I bought my Elantra new and have had no major mechanical issues. Ive had to replace brake pads once and front headlights twice (which the dealer replaced at no expense to me). My only complaint is that it is very noisy inside (road noise), but overall, am very satisfied with its performance.

  • Im luvin it! - 2004 Hyundai Elantra

I recently replaced a 91 econo-car with the 2004 Elantra GLS - and I am very pleased. I prefer to drive a car for many years (I drove my last one for just over 10 years) so choosing a new car took a bit of time to make sure I got something I would be happy with way down the road. The Elantra offered the best value: low cost, well built, sufficient fun-factor, good fuel economy, and a LONG warranty. Since I plan to keep this for at least 10 years, resale is irrelevant.

  • Dont get the 5 spd. - 2004 Hyundai Elantra
    By -

Ive had a 2004 Elantra GT hatchback for two months. Great car - fast, safe, reliable, comfortable. However, the 5 spd. is extremely clunky it feels more like a truck transmission than a car transmission. Moreover, the fog lights come on only when the headlights are on, which rather defeats the purpose of fog lights. Otherwise, terrific car.

  • Big Features for a Little Car - 2004 Hyundai Elantra

Car has many features found on luxury models, alarm sys, auto mirror adjust, remote locks, 5 way adjust seat, trip odometer, overdrive, power everything. Big features for little car at great price -- uy when 0% promo is going on -- cant beat price for amount of car you get.

Ive had my Hyundai which now has 46k miles now for just under 3 years now. Up until this year I was absolutely in love with my car, until it started giving me problems. Ive replaced both front and back brakes twice within a year. Ive had my transmission fluid flushed (shouldnt have had to do this). Ive had problems with it stalling, the RPMs jumping like no other. I no longer feel safe in this vehicle nor would I ever recommend it to a new buyer. Ive had it to the dealer 3 times and no one seems to know whats wrong, and everything that they "think" is causing it IS NOT covered under warranty. Paid for a warranty that doesnt cover a thing. Im highly disappointed & looking for a new car!

  • After 4 years ... - 2004 Hyundai Elantra
    By -

After 4 years of owning my GT, Im on my third set of tires (all good brands), have had the breaks replaced once and the front end aligned twice. This is all within the first 40k miles!!! The car is horrible in the snow, almost to the point of being dangerous. Other than that, Ive had no other real issues. It still looks good and handles great. On my daily commute (city and highway driving) I average 28mpg. Im debating if I want to buy a 2009 or go to a Civic/Corolla
