This Year's Model Updates:

Hyundai's Elantra sedan was redesigned last year, but the big news for 2002 is the release of the GT version, an all-new five-door hatchback that boasts such upscale standard equipment as a leather-trimmed interior, European suspension tuning, four-wheel disc brakes, 15-inch wheels, foglamps and a CD player. In September 2002, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup -- the Elantra is now rated at 135 hp, rather than 140. To compensate, the company is offering owners (of 2000 models and newer) three options: 10 years of roadside assistance, 6-year/72,000-mile basic warranty coverage or 12-year/120,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultra-low price tag.
Cons:
  • Funky front styling details.

  • Whole lot of car 4 the money! - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

WOW! I own a 98 Chrysler Intrepid and never thought a compact car could subsitute in size, comfort, amenities let alone price! Have driven my little Elantra 400 miles since July 25th. Ride, fit, finish, style, this little guy has it all. I bought mine with everything but ABS and spoiler for just under 13k. I am truly impressed. I NEVER thought Ib ever buy a Hyundai, but driving is believing. This isnt the Hyundai of days gone by! You have to take one of these cars for a test drive. Theres still the unknown of long term reliability, but the proof will be in the pudding. The warranty somewhat puts my mind at ease though.

To give an update after one full year of driving in both the hot and cold of Canada I have to say Im still in love with my car. Still fun to drive, Zero problems. Still feels tight and downright zippy. If you dont get snow tires youll be sorry. Im buying mine in a couple of days to prepare for the snow. I also recently got stuck in super heavy fog and really appreciated the fog lights. Excellent car. No reservations in recommending it. It is a keeper.

The Elantra is a fantastic value for the money. There are other cars in this category that will do some things better. None of them offer the value or warranty that the Elantra offers. It has a spirited powertrain. The suspension could be geared more for sport and less for comfort.

  • Good little car - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

A pretty good smaller car. It does everything asked of it. Nothing stands out as exceptional, nor is anything terrible.

I bought an Accent in 95. I was completely surprised at how reliable this car was.I drove the heck out of that car, and finally it came time to upgrade to something bigger that I felt safe driving around L.A. in. I shopped around for a good 4-5 months and drove several different cars. I was a bit biased towards the Hyundai, so I spent a little more time at Keyes. I had a great meeting at the dealership with the internet managers and they could not have been nicer. I got a great deal on a great car. My Elantra is comfortable, handles well, feels great on the road and gets excellent gas mileage.Hyundai makes great cars and deserves more respect.

  • bad weather - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

used to drive a jeep grand cherokee which i ran into the ground. bought the 2002 elantra after doing a lot of research. liked the standard features offered and bargain price and warranty. generally like the car but find it to be awful in bad weather (rain/snow). car doesnt hold the road at all, slides all over. generally like the car but wonder if i shouldnt have bought another 4 x 4. also have problems with the rear doors not shutting firmly. brakes squeak and wipers scrape. this after only 5 months of use. a sign of other nuisance problems to come ????

  • You get a lot of bang for your buck! - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

In October of last year, my (then) fiance needed to get ride of her Ford Explorer (the differential was due to go). She wanted a new car but didnt want a car that sold for more than $12,000. The reviews the Edmunds staff as well as the readers swayed us to try it out. That car is a BLAST to drive! It had tight handling, a lot of safety features (standard) and an overall nice feel. We just bought a 2003 Honda Accord LX and because I work 50 miles from where we live...I want to put the miles on the Elantra, rather than the Accord. However, I can say with complete honesty that I dont dread it. The Elantra is a joy to drive.

  • 7 months with my 2002 - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I have had the car since December, already have 13,000 miles and am pleased overall. I have noticed a few quirks though. My car, although an automatic, seems to have difficulty shifting sometimes. It will shift hard on occasion and I can see the RPMs shoot up. Im told they do this when they have not yet warmed up but I wonder if it is a sign of things to come. I also noticed that the AC only seems to work when Im moving. If I stop at a light I suddenly get a blast of air that is a little too tepid for AC.
