This Year's Model Updates:

Hyundai's Elantra sedan was redesigned last year, but the big news for 2002 is the release of the GT version, an all-new five-door hatchback that boasts such upscale standard equipment as a leather-trimmed interior, European suspension tuning, four-wheel disc brakes, 15-inch wheels, foglamps and a CD player. In September 2002, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup -- the Elantra is now rated at 135 hp, rather than 140. To compensate, the company is offering owners (of 2000 models and newer) three options: 10 years of roadside assistance, 6-year/72,000-mile basic warranty coverage or 12-year/120,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultra-low price tag.
Cons:
  • Funky front styling details.

  • Great value - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I bought this car as a compromise between practicality (no more station wagon) and fun. I found the car to have more safety features (ABS, side air bags, TCS) and luxury items (leather seating, remote control mirrors) than any other similar vehicle. Can be stuffed full of cargo for trips, pulls 1000 lb motorcycle/trailer, lots of pep (never felt sluggish except when passing at high speeds - fully loaded - which I shouldnt be doing anyway). No repairs in three years. Great warranty, roadside asst plan.

  • Really a great car for the price - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I rolled off the showroom floor with 4 miles and have had little to no problems. Initially, had some problems with the transmission mounts but Hyundai was quick to fix with no cost. Also some stereo issues. Keeps shorting out for some reason. As it gets older, the engine makes a little more noise. Exhaust sounds from the engine compartment is the most noticeable. Overall, Id buy another one in a heartbeat. What an awesome car with excellent features. IT ALWAYS STARTS!!!!!

  • Luv my Hyundai - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I have owned my Hyundai Elantra for two years. I have not had any major mechanical problems. Only oil and tire changes. It has been a joy to own. The projected gas mileage stated on the dealer sticker is accurate. I love my Hyundai and am considering buying another one for my daughter!

  • other than mpg, a good car - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Its been about 11 months that Ive had this car now, and its survived plenty of city commuting and a cross- country road trip admirably. Generally, a very good car in both contexts. Surprisingly comfortable for a small car with a 63" driver...even on longer road trips. A little noisy at high speeds. Handles well.

  • Overall Good Experience with this Car - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I had a good experience with this car overall but not good enough to buy another Hyundai. On the plus side, you get a lot of features for the money on the down side, you tend to get what you pay for. In 3 years, I never had any major problems (other than clutch going out after 12 months due to San Francisco hills), but had lots of minor problems: brake lights constantly going out, cruise control went out, CDs stuck in CD player, worn-out floor mats, paint dinged easily. That said, the car was mechanically sound and suited my needs well as a basic city car. Wouldnt buy another Hyundai, a) because I can afford something better now and b) because I cant get past its inherent cheapness.

  • Dont underestimate this car. - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

How many people have you heard complain about the quality of Hyundai? So had I. But I actually did this thing called "research" on the 2002 GLS. What did my research uncover? That there was no way Id find another car thatd let me walk out the door with all the standard options this car has, plus anti-theft, cruise control, spoiler and an AT for twelve four. Tax, title, registration and plates, people. Not to mention the beefy warrenty AND 24/7 roadside assistance for 5 years. I DEFY you to. It has looks I wouldnt get embarassed over to boot. Sure, it has its drawbacks, but the gains exceed those by a wide margin in this case.

  • Great car for the money - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

In less than 3 years i have put 60,000 miles on this car. I had a few issues in the begining with superficial maintenance, but overall this has been a fantastic car for the money. It has reasonable performance, great cargo space, stylish, and as I already said, economically priced.

  • Best Kept Secret - 2002 Hyundai Elantra
    By -

This car is the best kept secret in autodom. Great fit and finish, adequate performance and in my experience, relibility second to none. I have had one problem in two years and 57,000 miles, warped brake rotors. The dealer replaced all four rotors no questions asked and the problem has not returned.

  • Gas mileage - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Ive been pretty disatisfied with the poor gas mileage Ive been getting the longer Ive owned this car. When it was new, I was getting about 28 mpg in the city, but that was still less than my average 30 mpg Id been getting from my 94 Mazda Protege. Also, performance has suffered, too. Now it seems like the engine isnt breathing right. Ive taken it in to my local dealer and theyve been great! But my mpg continues to decline Im now getting barely 23 mpg/city, 29 mpg/highway. Also had some hesitation problems upon intial ignition FYI, there is a fix for this at your dealer. Ask them to update the software on your cars computer.
