This Year's Model Updates:

Hyundai's Elantra sedan was redesigned last year, but the big news for 2002 is the release of the GT version, an all-new five-door hatchback that boasts such upscale standard equipment as a leather-trimmed interior, European suspension tuning, four-wheel disc brakes, 15-inch wheels, foglamps and a CD player. In September 2002, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup -- the Elantra is now rated at 135 hp, rather than 140. To compensate, the company is offering owners (of 2000 models and newer) three options: 10 years of roadside assistance, 6-year/72,000-mile basic warranty coverage or 12-year/120,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultra-low price tag.
Cons:
  • Funky front styling details.

Love this car, owned a 01 Hyundai Accent, too small for someone who is 61" So decided to upgrade. Not really happy to know I could have gotten a better deal then I got. Paid 13,600 but considering I had a trade-in, I guess I got a good deal! I didnt go to several dealerships, should have, oh well! Car drives, handles awesome! LOOOOOVE Cruise, Keyless Entry, and something I have never had on any car of mine, AN ALARM!!!

My wife and I compete for driving this vehicle. We have 2 other cars, a VW Jetta and a Honda Accord. The Hyundai Elantra GT is a clear winner! I would recommend this vehicle to my most hated enemy.

  • Not just a great value, a great car. - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I visited dealerships every day over a full week and test drove almost a dozen competing vehicles. I still cant believe that exactly the right car for me was also the cheapest. Of course this car isnt for everybody. But if you care about driving enjoyment, comfort, and most of all utility, test drive this car immediately! Besides looking great, the interior is highly functional and the seats are very comfortable for long drives. For some people, the exterior of any hatchback takes getting used to. But it wont take long to appreciate all that cargo area! Just dont be surprised when everybody asks you about your new Saab (or Lexus).

  • The best low cost vehical in the world - 2002 Hyundai Elantra
    By -

It has all the amenities I really want and then some. This car is built for comfort and long term ownership. I purchased this vehical with 10Yr 100,000 mile bumper to bumper, no deductible, warranty and .9% financing (almost as good as zero) for $280 a month for 3 Yrs. That is just incredible. Do yourself a favor and look at this vehical.

  • Best car ever - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Bought this as my first brand new vehicle, had plenty of used ones. This car was the bargain of the century. I got the loaded GT hatch in black and the ONLY complaint I have is that the paint wasnt the absolute best, but I never has any rust or paint loss. With plenty of pep I could pass at 60MPH with the AC on no problem. Tons and Tons of cargo space with the seats folded flat. I drove this car freaking everywhere in every climate at every altitude this country has to offer and had zero problems with performance or build quality. Anyone complaining about this vehicle either bought it used from someone who didnt care for it, or bought it high mileage. BEST.CAR.EVER.

  • cheap price, great value - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

We drove it for a year. With 300 miles long distance trip every week. Nothing needed repair, just smooth. My hus just had an accident and walked out unharmed at all. The car was totaled mainly because the cost to fix it can buy a new one. We are happy with the result especialy my husband is not hurt. Next vehicle is going to be the Santa Fe and we currently still owns a Tiburon. We believe we have put our money into true values. We paid 14000 total for the Elantra, which includes tax, etc.

i just baught the elantra gt about a mounth ago. about a week after i bought it my grandmother took a spill out side her house in california and broke her hip. i decided to get time off of work and take a trip down to help her out. now i live in north dakota and my grandmother lives about 30 minutes north east of sacremento CA. i took her through everything from dirt roads in north dakota to snowy passes in montana, washington, and oregon and rough traffic in portland and sacremento. she preformed extermely well in all envirements. her handling never got rougher no matter what terrain or how much snow and rain were coming.id just like to thank the guys who built it.

  • Few Repairs until Engine Failure 150k - 2002 Hyundai Elantra
    By -

Bought new in 2002. It had only two very minor repairs during the 150,000 miles I had the car 1)coolant thermostat (replaced myself for $30. 2)Headlight bulbs - replaced nearly 3 times...not very expensive but a little inconvenient. The car was extremely dependable on a daily basis and very fuel efficient. However, at 150k miles, the thrust bearing went out in the engine, meaning I needed a new engine. The replacement cost would have been about what the car was worth..$3000. I would highly recommend the car but would suggest calling a dealer first to see if the 02 models are known for this particular engine problem.
