This Year's Model Updates:

Hyundai's Elantra sedan was redesigned last year, but the big news for 2002 is the release of the GT version, an all-new five-door hatchback that boasts such upscale standard equipment as a leather-trimmed interior, European suspension tuning, four-wheel disc brakes, 15-inch wheels, foglamps and a CD player. In September 2002, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup -- the Elantra is now rated at 135 hp, rather than 140. To compensate, the company is offering owners (of 2000 models and newer) three options: 10 years of roadside assistance, 6-year/72,000-mile basic warranty coverage or 12-year/120,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultra-low price tag.
Cons:
  • Funky front styling details.

  • Reliable, but some maintenance woes - 2002 Hyundai Elantra
    By -

Just paid off the car. Let me start by saying that the car runs like a dream, is exceptionally roomy for a compact, and maintains speed very well (a must when I drove it across country when I moved from the west to the east). Bought new for the warranty, but everything that went wrong was maintenance parts. Dont get me wrong, It is a fabulous car. You just need to know that you have to replace the headlights every year and tires every 1-2.

  • An intelligent buy - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Civic and Corolla better? Maybe a little, but this car is a gem for its price. The base features are amazing. Design is a little conservative, but not lame. Build quality seems excellent. 13,000 miles and no problems at all. If you are looking for a really good car at the best value out there, buy this.

  • Is this Hyundai Elantra really that good - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I bought a 2002 Elantra (7 months/ 3200 miles, as 2nd car). First off, poor mileage for a small car, < 20 mpg city driving. Engine revs up until 30 mph, then RPM spikes up, and shifts to higher gear. Once there, it drives well. Small rear seats, esp with infants car seat in the middle. Flimsy trunk hood and that leads me to worry about overall quality -unsure how sturdy it is in a collision. For all that, the car has its plus points. Drives well on the highway (40 mph or higher zones), AC works well, and nice defogger that clears up real fast. Handles turns better than Corolla (which I test drove), interior is much quieter than Saturn & 2002 Nissan Sentra.

  • My Cheap SAAB.. - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

After a long search for my second New car the GT won! Ive owned over 20 cars (most used), but the Hyundai has been one of the best picks so far. Fit and finish are great as well as the options included. The interior is very comfortable for me and my wife, and plenty of useable room. Even with the auto it has good power, and Ive been averaging 25-30 mpg with mainly city driving. Handling is very good for a front wheel drive car, and the stock tires hold well in snow/rain and dry conditions.

  • Best Bang for the buck!! - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Love this Elantra, just got it with 55K miles on it, and it is so much better then my Saturn! Now at 58K, nothing has gone wrong. Hope to keep it that way. :-D Engine: very peppy and quiet. Transmission: 4 speed auto with O/D, very smooth shifting. Interior: power windows, locks, CD player with premium sound, OEM wood grain kit. (Can you believe it!!?) Seats are great! AC and heat work awesome. Exterior: 15" steelies with hubcaps (want to get OEM rims) tinted headlights, aftermarket daytime running light kit (dims highs @ 75% power), white paint, mud flaps all the way around.

  • Traded in a Lexus, very pleased - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

We sold our 94 Lexus ES-300 and replaced it with this vehicle. I was not expecting the quality that we have with this vehicle and I am overall very pleased and at about 1/3 the price of a new Lexus ES-300.

  • A saavy consumer - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I had tried Civics, Corollas, Proteges etc. Finally, I tried the Elantra and was surprised, especially with how it drove. More responsive than the Civic, more solid than the Camry. My friends know that my car didnt cost as much as theirs did. But when they are complaining about taking their car into the shop and about their huge monthly loan bills I only smile. Many of them have remarked how nice it is when I give them a ride. The support after I bought the car has been incredible. Hyundai is really catering to the consumer, which I like. A happy Hyundai owner.

  • Got Lucky - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

My wife and I were in the market for a secondary, slightly used car for our household. We looked at Saturns, Ford Focuses, Mazda Proteges, etc etc...in other words, something reliable but not wanting to pay the $$$ of a used Honda or Toyota. We never considered a Hyundai. Then we noticed a neighbor down the street with a nice looking Elantra for sale. Further Investigation revealed a 2002 GLS with only 11,000 miles and a price tag around 6K! After driving the car, it was pretty much a no brainer...it now sits in our driveway...What a wonderful little car at a steal of a price.

  • Almost perfect - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I researched cars in this class for months before taking the plunge. I bought the Elantra GT to replace my wifes Neon Sport. We both have past racing experience and realy enjoy driving a good-performing car. The GT has most of what I was looking for and is the only car out there that offers so much for so little.

  • 2002 Elantra VE - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I purchased this vehicle used (lease return)with 83300kms on the clock. It has exceeded all my expectations. The only trouble I have had was the failure of the front speed sensor on the auto transmission. It would not let it shift to 3rd gear. I was able to drive at 80kph to the dealer where it was replaced. The transmission shifts beautifully. I plan on another Hyundai as my next vehicle, and I highly recommend it to anyone who asks. The only downside for me is the control for the cruise. It is not as convenient to use as the buttons on the steering wheel used by other manufacturers.
