This Year's Model Updates:

Hyundai's Elantra sedan was redesigned last year, but the big news for 2002 is the release of the GT version, an all-new five-door hatchback that boasts such upscale standard equipment as a leather-trimmed interior, European suspension tuning, four-wheel disc brakes, 15-inch wheels, foglamps and a CD player. In September 2002, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup -- the Elantra is now rated at 135 hp, rather than 140. To compensate, the company is offering owners (of 2000 models and newer) three options: 10 years of roadside assistance, 6-year/72,000-mile basic warranty coverage or 12-year/120,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultra-low price tag.
Cons:
  • Funky front styling details.

Price, Safety, Style, Warranty, Roominess, Smooth ride. This one blows out the competition, including Civic. We got one pretty much loaded...auto., cruise, ABS, side air bags, etc. for $12,500. Includes many std. features that youd have to pay extra for on other cars (i.e., fold down rear seat). Seats are a bit firm. Good rear leg room. Acceleration just ok, but once up to speed power is very good.

After much research and two test drives, my wife and I turned in our leased 1999 VW Jetta and purchased a red 2002 Elantra GT demo w/pkg. 11. We love it and cant believe the price we paid. The car is powerful, quiet and well laid out. After 3,000 miles we dont have one complaint. Go Hyundai.

I have had the car since December, already have 13,000 miles and am pleased overall. I have noticed a few quirks though. My car, although an automatic, seems to have difficulty shifting sometimes. It will shift hard on occasion and I can see the RPMs shoot up. Im told they do this when they have not yet warmed up but I wonder if it is a sign of things to come. I also noticed that the AC only seems to work when Im moving. If I stop at a light I suddenly get a blast of air that is a little too tepid for AC.

I traded in my 1998 Tiburon, only because I wanted the additional protection of side impact airbags and occasional use of the rear seat for adults. I was initially attracted to the GT when I saw one on the dealers lot, and couldnt believe how much car was available for sixteen thousand dollars. Since my experience with the quality of the Tiburon was very positive, I had no reservations about buying another Hyundai product.

I really like this car. I got a nice deal on it. I only paid 13,650 for it. I wish it had more HP but it fine at 135 HP.

  • Nice little package - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Nice styling, excellent interior. Two gripes that I have... first, for a 140-hp engine it seems to accelerate quite poorly, especially at higher speeds. Second, for some reason, the brakes squeal the first couple of times you use them after the car has been stationary for some time, say overnight. Otherwise a very decent package for a very reasonable price.

I am happy with the reliability of the car above all. and if ever it were to fail, it has the 100K, 10 yr. warranty. I am used to a v-6 and miss that, but for a 4 cylinder it has a lot of pick-up-and-go
