This Year's Model Updates:

Hyundai's Elantra sedan was redesigned last year, but the big news for 2002 is the release of the GT version, an all-new five-door hatchback that boasts such upscale standard equipment as a leather-trimmed interior, European suspension tuning, four-wheel disc brakes, 15-inch wheels, foglamps and a CD player. In September 2002, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup -- the Elantra is now rated at 135 hp, rather than 140. To compensate, the company is offering owners (of 2000 models and newer) three options: 10 years of roadside assistance, 6-year/72,000-mile basic warranty coverage or 12-year/120,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultra-low price tag.
Cons:
  • Funky front styling details.

  • 7K miles of reliability - 2002 Hyundai Elantra
    By -

Bought the GT 8 months ago, put 7K miles on it, changed oil once. No other maintenance or any problems or rattles to report. This is the first new car Ive ever bought. Did a lot of research and havent regretted spending less money than my friends who bought Hondas and Toyotas. Ill be done with payments a year before they will be... If you want a reliable, sporty, economic, AND comfortable car consider an Elantra GT.

  • Unbelievable!!! - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

To sum it up, I am elated. This is the best car for the money, both horsepower wise and safety wise. It looks great, feels even better, and comes with surprising perks. Even without the warranty I would have purchased this wonderful car.

In October of last year, my (then) fiance needed to get ride of her Ford Explorer (the differential was due to go). She wanted a new car but didnt want a car that sold for more than $12,000. The reviews the Edmunds staff as well as the readers swayed us to try it out. That car is a BLAST to drive! It had tight handling, a lot of safety features (standard) and an overall nice feel. We just bought a 2003 Honda Accord LX and because I work 50 miles from where we live...I want to put the miles on the Elantra, rather than the Accord. However, I can say with complete honesty that I dont dread it. The Elantra is a joy to drive.

  • I didnt have to "Settle" - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I had to purchase a second car that was safe, economical, fun to drive, but most importantly inexpensive. I foresaw myself driving a stripped down VW Golf since I needed a hatchback for my dog. Then along comes the Elantra GT. The GT offers so much to a driver for so little. The interior is chock full of amenities that will cost thousands more in other cars; CD player, leather, trip computer, keyless remote... On the exterior, the upgraded suspension, alloy wheels and Michelin tires were a huge selling point. The engine is powerful though lacking good acceleration (my last car was a VW with a VR6). But the fuel economy speaks volumes.

  • A little gem. - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Hyundai has come a great distance since the Excel arrived in the 80s. This car does not rattle. The fit and finish is on par with Honda, the styling is above average. The interior is well-appointed. (the leather was a nice feature.) The car is very fun to drive. You really need to drive it to appreciate it. This car is an intelligent and as impressive a design as the first Saab 900.

  • 2002 Hyundai Elantra GT- Fun, Value - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I think this car is an undiscovered value. All other 5 door Hatchbacks I look at were over $2,000 more plus no 10 year - 100,000 mile warranty! Also the list of standard equipment is impressive (leather, 4-wheel dics brakes, alloy wheels, CD, etc., keyless/alarm, etc.) Great driving around town or on the inter-state!

  • Excellent car for the money - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Much better than a saturn or even a ford. Car is laid out conservativly in the interior but has standard Leather Seats. Get it for the seats if nothing else. Thay make a big diffrence in the hot spring and summer

  • Proud Elantra Owner - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I really love my Hyundai Elantra. As I found when researching to purchase a car when you go with a Hyundai vehicle you get a lot more for your money and the warranty is unbeatable. I am a proud Hyundai owner!!!

  • A good little car - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

When my last car expired abruptly, I had to move quickly to get a new car. Id been aiming for a Toyota, but I had to set my sights a little lower. The Hyundai Elantra fit into my budget, though I was initially a little nervous about the Hyundai name. I neednt have worried. Ive had no problems with the car at all, and I even learned to drive a stick on it. The gas mileage has been decent, if not an astounding improvement over my last car. The ride has been smooth, and its been nicely responsive. No problems yet at all, though Im reassuerd to know that if I do have problems like my previous car (not a Hyundai) gave me, that the Hyundais warranty will cover those.

  • Super Safe - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

My daughter was driving the car when she was in a major crash. The car was totaled but she opened the door and walked away without so much as a scratch. The car was replaced with another Elantra as I dont want her driving anything else.
