This Year's Model Updates:

Hyundai's Elantra sedan was redesigned last year, but the big news for 2002 is the release of the GT version, an all-new five-door hatchback that boasts such upscale standard equipment as a leather-trimmed interior, European suspension tuning, four-wheel disc brakes, 15-inch wheels, foglamps and a CD player. In September 2002, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup -- the Elantra is now rated at 135 hp, rather than 140. To compensate, the company is offering owners (of 2000 models and newer) three options: 10 years of roadside assistance, 6-year/72,000-mile basic warranty coverage or 12-year/120,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultra-low price tag.
Cons:
  • Funky front styling details.

  • This car made me like driving! - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I hated driving, but since I got my Elantra, I love just driving my car around town.

  • Not too bad! - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

This is not a bad car to own, however you should make sure you want to keep it for more than 2 years if you buy one. The resale value has not bounced back from early bad reviews, so if you finance, you may find yourself owing more than its worth if you try to sell too soon. On the up side, its comfortable, has a great sound system and looks nice on the outside. I like that an affordable car came with a power moonroof and CD player. The gas mileage could be better, but is within the acceptable range.

Purchased the 2002 Elantra GLS manual 2 weeks ago. The car drives pretty damn good and so far it has exceeded my expectations. Overall the value of the Elantra is excellent considering the standard options, quality of ride and warranty. And when you compare this car to the compition, its a clear winner. The 5 years TCO (total cost of ownership) on Edmunds uses the TMV (true market value) purchase price when calculating the cost per mile. I recalculated the 5 year TCO using the my purchase price and came out with .28/mile cost which is several cents below their number.Your Hyundai dealer will take invoice on the 2002 and give you back the rebate.

  • Better than expected - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Had the car for 6 months/7000 miles and I love it. Not a single problem other than fighting my wife for it(beats driving the family mini-van). Wish the car had a little more low-end acceleration, but it more than makes up for it with the overall ride.

  • Cannot beat this car!!!!!!!!! 5 STAR A+ - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I was looking for a new car and spent time reserching makes model and prices v/s quality. I narrowed it to two makes and models. The KIA Spectra GSX and the Hyundai Elantra Hatchback GT. I drove the KIA first and did not feel well about that experience. When I sat in the Elantra GT Hatch, it was instant Love. This is a great car with Standard Leather Seats, CD, Cruise, PW, PL, and a well laid out interior. You will not find a better warranty and some dealers are offering 12/120000 mile warranties if you buy from them. Super quality and Hyundai is now ranked equal to Honda quality. I can believe it. Get em while they are cheap. And remember Read the B.O.M.

  • Fantastic Car no matter what the price - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I researched cars for several weeks and test drove several, including a Mitsubishi Galant. I have to tell you, I was extremely impressed with the Elantra GT on paper and even more so after the test drive, and felt it to be better than cars thousands of dollars more. Inside the car feels like a million bucks, and i think the styling is terrific (many have noted it looks like a saab). Test drive this car-- you wont be disappointed. I drove an eclipse previously (which cost 3000 more) and gladly traded it in.

The Hyundai elantra GLS is a very good deal for the money. its like driving on rails of steel. with the option of the abs, remote alarm and cd youll be chilling like a villian. i love my car and i aint kidding. the only problem i got is parking it out of my sight. i may just sleep in it. BUY THIS CAR, OR AT LEAST TEST DRIVE IT.

  • Whole lot of car 4 the money! - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

WOW! I own a 98 Chrysler Intrepid and never thought a compact car could subsitute in size, comfort, amenities let alone price! Have driven my little Elantra 400 miles since July 25th. Ride, fit, finish, style, this little guy has it all. I bought mine with everything but ABS and spoiler for just under 13k. I am truly impressed. I NEVER thought Ib ever buy a Hyundai, but driving is believing. This isnt the Hyundai of days gone by! You have to take one of these cars for a test drive. Theres still the unknown of long term reliability, but the proof will be in the pudding. The warranty somewhat puts my mind at ease though.
