This Year's Model Updates:

Hyundai's Elantra sedan was redesigned last year, but the big news for 2002 is the release of the GT version, an all-new five-door hatchback that boasts such upscale standard equipment as a leather-trimmed interior, European suspension tuning, four-wheel disc brakes, 15-inch wheels, foglamps and a CD player. In September 2002, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup -- the Elantra is now rated at 135 hp, rather than 140. To compensate, the company is offering owners (of 2000 models and newer) three options: 10 years of roadside assistance, 6-year/72,000-mile basic warranty coverage or 12-year/120,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultra-low price tag.
Cons:
  • Funky front styling details.

  • My first Hyundai - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I have owned Hondas and Toyotas and never thought I would ever own a Hyundai (remember the Pony). But the quality is every bit as good. It will soon be 3 years old with very little in repairs required. Gas mileage is OK for a car with 140 HP, I get 40 Hwy and 30 City. It has a lot of extra features for the money.

Bought this car for my wife .... to replace her 97 Neon. Price was about the same as a new Neon, but what great additional features. The drivers seat is fully adjustable, and has lumbar support! It is a pleasure to drive, and the whole family fights to see who can drive it to work. I was attracted by the price/features .... Im now sold on the features/quality/enjoyment driving. This is one fun little car that can easily handle a 500 - 1000 mile trip in comfort.

  • I should have kept my Lada - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Lots of useless bells & whistles. If you wear fake Rolex youll probably love a Hyundai. Scheduled maintenance expensive. MPG no better than my 20 y.o. VW. Couldnt get a comfortable seat position. No comfortable place for arm rests. Shoulder belt uncomfortable. Steering wheel only adjusts up and down not tilt. AC takes a long time to cool the car. Lots of road noise. I like my old car better. Great car when compared to a Yugo.

Just bought this car for $10,700 and really should/could have paid more. Drives great, nice features. Much better than spending 12k on a used car with 50k milage!

Ive waited to write this review, because I put a lot of emphasis on quality and reliability. When I test- drove comparable cars, this was a hand- down winner in comfort and ride quality. It also had better features for a lower price. After almost two years of ownership, Im pleased to say its also very reliable.

  • Good car, poor service department - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Im 64" and very comfortable in this car. The ride for a small car is excellent, better than an accord we also own. Gas mileage not up to expectations however, I have found that non "reformulated gas" delivers about 36 mpg at 75 mph. Unfortunately it isnt available locally. Have brought the car in twice for minor service. Both times, dealership broke something and had to wait for parts. At least they gave me a new Sante Fe to use, and it cost me nothing.

  • Pleasantly surprised! - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I have owned my Elantra for almost 2 years now. I got this car just a year after my wife got a 2001 Elantra GT. It has well surpassed my expectations. My wife had a 92 Elantra brand new and it was just horrible. I can truly say comparing the two is like day and night. The ride is quiet and smooth. Lots of storage! Gas mileage could be better especially for a stick. You get more for your money with this car than other in this class, and it wont cost you an arm and a leg. Very Practical.

  • Great car and value - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

At just over $14k, this car may be the best value on the market in its class. After 3 weeks, we love it all the more. Its more comfortable than expected for its size, has just enough pep, and looks good. The GTs hatch is versatile for cargo. Rear 60/40 seats fold flat by flipping up bottom seats - nice. You cant get more for the money. After over 8 years & 120k miles with a Hyundai Excel, Ill attest to the long- term quality, low mtc. cost and reliability. Not to mention how far theyve come in that time with design and value-added features. You cant go wrong with a Hyundai.

  • not a bad car - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I use this car as a comuter car. I put 30 miles a day 5 days a week. I go two weeks between fill-ups. It meets my needs and works great.

  • What Are You Waiting For? Get This Car! - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Ive had the Elantra GT for a year, and love it! Anyone "on the fence" about a Hyundai should really check out their new line -- esp the GT. These cars have terrific build quality, are reliable, and the features that cost an additional $3K-$4K in other cars are INCLUDED in the GT. Wife owns a Honda and she loves my car! Any fault that could possibly be found is beyond minor when you compare what you get vs. what you pay. Love the look of the car. Friends constantly stop me to ask if its "really" a Hyundai. The photos on the site dont do it justice...Do yourself a favor -- put it on your list. Trust me, youre definitely NOT "settling."
