This Year's Model Updates:

The Elantra received a slight refresh for this year in the form of a new hood, deck lid, front and rear bumpers, grille, headlamps and taillights. Interior revisions include a redesigned instrument cluster, vents, center console and climate controls. The engine has been fitted with continuously variable valve timing, and it is now sold in SULEV or ULEV configurations (depending on the state in which it's purchased) which offer horsepower ratings of 138 and 132, respectively. The base GLS model now offers remote keyless entry as standard equipment, while GT models now have a Kenwood CD/MP3 audio system as standard.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultralow price tag, long warranty.
Cons:
  • Poor offset crash test score, antilock brakes available only as a package option.

  • Excellent car - doubly so for the money - 2004 Hyundai Elantra

Owned since April 31 of this year. Just got it out of the shop at 10k miles - they dropped a new transmission in, the old one grinded shifting into second at anything over 2800rpm. Minor interior trim rattling on rough roads or when the sub is cranked. Other than that, this car is more feature-laden and fun to drive than anything out there under $16k, even taking other cars rebates into effect. The Mazda3 is more fun, with a stronger engine and better aftermarket support, but costs $5k more than the $11,600 I paid for my GT hatch... and if I sink half of that difference into suspension, wheel/tire, and engine upgrades Ill have almost as nice a car customized to my liking. Bravo Hyundai!

I bought my oldest daughter an elantra in 2002 for her high school graduation present she was leaving for college and I liked the warranty. But after her driving it for 2 yrs and no warranty claims and the satisfaction she got and the peace of mind I got I bought my other daughter a 2004 Elantra for her High School Graduation Present. When I get the 2002 paid off Im going to buy my wife the sharp looking SUV that Hyundai has to offer. Thank-You Hyundai for putting the customer first.

Car is very relaible, handles well- fairly comfortable to drive. Needs more power on hilly roads but if you use cruise control on hills it does fine. Get 33 mpg on trips but get similar results from my 2002 camry.Great car for the money

  • Great Little Car - 2004 Hyundai Elantra

I bought my Elantra as a little commuter car to drive to work instead of a truck. I am very happy with this little car. It is surprisingly peppy and fun to drive. It sounds like a sports car in sheeps clothing. For the price you cant beat it. Im amazed they are not flying of the lots... but had I not come out to Edmunds I might not have ever looked at them. Compared to a Honda or Toyota you get a whole lot more Bang for the buck.

I purchased my Elantra in July 2004 and have been delighted with it. The only thing I wish Id done is upgraded the handling package. Living in the mountains the extra traction would have been nice. But boy, does it ever fly up that hill!

Its a compact car that doesnt feel so compact. It gets excellent gas mileage and performs well in both city street and highway driving. With such a great warranty and looks, what could be better?!

  • Lots of fun for the money - 2004 Hyundai Elantra

I have owned this vehicle about two months and really love it. It is fun to drive and the stereo is great. The hatchback gives lots of cargo room. The leather seats are a real bonus. There are only two shortcomings: the gas mileage is not great (but it is so fun to drive that is minor) and there are no cupholders in the rear. But for the price, I dont think you can beat it.
