This Year's Model Updates:

Hyundai's Elantra sedan was redesigned last year, but the big news for 2002 is the release of the GT version, an all-new five-door hatchback that boasts such upscale standard equipment as a leather-trimmed interior, European suspension tuning, four-wheel disc brakes, 15-inch wheels, foglamps and a CD player. In September 2002, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup -- the Elantra is now rated at 135 hp, rather than 140. To compensate, the company is offering owners (of 2000 models and newer) three options: 10 years of roadside assistance, 6-year/72,000-mile basic warranty coverage or 12-year/120,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultra-low price tag.
Cons:
  • Funky front styling details.

  • Surprised - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I just love driving this car! 9000 miles in 4 mo. The 5 speed has quick pick-up and we just purchased a 2nd Hyundai yesterday! Wish I had this kind of quick set-up when I drove in road rallyes!

  • 02 Elantra makes the grade - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I had a wonderful buying experience at Mirak, the only dealership in the area that took me seriously and would negotiate on the price. The cars engine sounds better and better as the miles add up. The headlines rattles slightly but other than that there are no problems with my new car. Power is acceptable and one can easily push the engine towards the red line to get that added boost if needed.

  • Hard to beat - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

For what the Elantra GT costs and what you get for the money , it is very hard to beat .. I have had mine for 6 months and have almost 11k on it sofar and i am very please with the car . I own a accent with 170+k miles on it so buying another Hyundai wasnt a problem . They have shown me they make good cars . The base model has all the options you could want from a car and for 15k or under it cant be beat .

  • 13,000 miles and stilll happy - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Fell in love with the car on the test drive and havent regretted the purchase yet. Very firm handling and good pickup on expressway driving - much better than former car (Saturn) Really like the exterior design - still see other drivers checking out the car - and the leather interior is a nice plus. Was initially skittish because of the (old) Hyundai reputation and fear that trade in value would drop like a stone, but have been happily surprised by performance (and I tend to drive my cars into the ground)

  • Happy so far! - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

have to say that the biggest appeal to this car is the fact that not many people even know about it yet, it hasnt become the standard like the honda civic

  • GT Must Stand for Good Times! - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Just bought the pewter GT (fully loaded)...I love this car! My brother drove it he was completely impressed. He is 6 2" and Im 5 4. My brother had plenty of leg & head room. There is plenty of power for passing, normal excelleration and mountain driving. We had no problems with the power going up steep roads with the A/C on! Looked down to find us going 85 mph! This car has got performance! Good sound and I love that trip meter! So far Iv gotten 30.4 mpg (mountain driving, 75/85 mph and bumper to bumper traffic all while using the A/C!) All around a great car. I found it to be a better buy than what those other manufacturers offer! Get the GT.

  • Fantastic Car! - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I love this car! It has most of the features of a luxury sedan, but in a smaller, more fun package, and with a warrenty that leave me worry-free. Im in college, so its nice to have a car that wont have unanticipated expenses. It handles well enough in the snow, due to the anti-lock brakes and front wheel drive. Im 6-4, and still have plenty of room to engage the clutch and sit comfortably.

  • Great car - no fuss - 2002 Hyundai Elantra
    By -

Good car. Only issues I had with the car was when the dealer worked on my car. Changed the timing belt on advice of the dealer but when I looked at the old belt it looked almost new. Replace front rotors on the wheel due to rusting ($100 each). Other than that I have no issues with the car. It made it through the crazy upstate New York winter like a chap. Like the go-cart feeling. For the person who did not like the steering feel, take it to a mechanic and tighten the steering column.

  • Lights burn out its a bulb - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I love my car.It has the 100,000 mile warranty, I purchased the extended warranty have had no problems with it,The check engine light come on so your belts and things can be checked..Great car I would purchase another one...as far as the bulbs are concerned its a tiny little bulb that doesnt last a life time for the person that griped about changing the bulb..
