This Year's Model Updates:

Hyundai's Elantra sedan was redesigned last year, but the big news for 2002 is the release of the GT version, an all-new five-door hatchback that boasts such upscale standard equipment as a leather-trimmed interior, European suspension tuning, four-wheel disc brakes, 15-inch wheels, foglamps and a CD player. In September 2002, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup -- the Elantra is now rated at 135 hp, rather than 140. To compensate, the company is offering owners (of 2000 models and newer) three options: 10 years of roadside assistance, 6-year/72,000-mile basic warranty coverage or 12-year/120,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultra-low price tag.
Cons:
  • Funky front styling details.

  • OK value and practical car - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Pros: easy on the eye very roomy interior for smallish car with nice leather nice suspension that handles bumps very well, gives impression of heavier and higher end car. Cons: Engine runs very hot, maybe inefficient design since gas mileage below average sheet metal very soft (thin gauge?) and prone to dings and dents very uncomfortable front seats for interstate driving headlights burn out too often sun roof causes annoying hums and air pressure waves when used. I would not recommend this car although it is average and of OK value for its price. My advice if you buy one is stay well clear of Hyundai dealer who scam you by calling every 3,ooo miles a "service" at $100+

  • Not Honda, Hyundai - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I have been a loyal Honda owner - until now. Hyundai has done a very good job in the Elantra GT. I was looking for a reasonbly priced sedan and found the GT! It is pleasure to drive and the performance is ample for a car in the economy class. Kudos to Hyundai. The dealer was attentive and responsive to a few minor details that needed to be fixed. I have only 1600 miles on it so far and am continually impressed. I paid just over $15,000, as the car has every option. Averaging 30 - 35 mpg with mix of city/hwy. Quiet at 75 or so and stable.

I have owned this car for 2 years now, Bought at 74K miles, currently has 112K Miles on it.2 Repairs apart from regular oil changes 1. O2 Sensor(which is not abnormal) 2. Throttle positioning switch. Through it has performed extremely well , Gives a decent 30-32 MPG.

  • Stop Thinking about buying this car !!! - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I have been in 3 Major accidents in my 2002 elantra gls the first 2 did nearly $10,000 in damage the third was a total loss where I only received $3,500 for my car from Allstate. This car does not have anti lock breaks (abs) and it has poor traction control. In all 3 accidents none of my airbags deployed. My insurance sky rocketed. After the second accident I never felt safe again. The feeling of sliding and then slamming into something is something I will never forget. Save your self and other people from elantras and avoid them like the plague.

  • I love my Hyundai! - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I bought this car brand new and have driven 122,000 miles with NO major problems. The suspension, exhaust, and air conditioning are all holding up well and have never been serviced! The ONLY thing I think Hyundai could have done better is increase the time between replacements of the timing belt which is set for every 60k miles. Dealerships want to charge over $1100 for the service, but I can get it done at Midas for $450 - its a pain because they usually want the car for the entire day. Even with that, the maintenance costs have been super low and all I do is regular oil changes. I hope to keep this car for another 80k at least!

  • 198,000 km and still rolling - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I bought this car 4 months ago had to change the radiator, the battery and the head light now have to change the exhaust, the alternator and the spark plugs despite of this... Man I love my car! Nice plastic wood finish, engine not hard on oil and engine very peppy for a 2.0l 4 cyl. Only paid 1500$ and I knew I had to put money in it but I didnt mind cause Hyundai is a very reliable brand and that my car will last for another 198,00 km )

  • Won over - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I bought this car at 99,000 miles to get out of a gas guzzling van. I was wary, but now Im won over. I love this car. Good pep, good nimbleness, good gas mileage, good comfort. This small car even has leather seats and a sunroof! I looking for another Hyundai for my kid and stating to look for another used elantra in a more recent model year for me.

  • Keeping this car forever - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I got this car when this was all I could afford. I have 94000 on it. Ive had some things go wrong with it. I had the transmission replaced, under warranty. The car is strange when I started it, it stutters for about 5-10 seconds when I press on the gas. Fixing the transmission has not fixed this. Other than that no problems whatsoever. Very reliable.

  • Hyundais Sports Sedan - 2002 Hyundai Elantra
    By -

A bona fide sports sedan, and all for a paltry $13,999 MSRP. The included equipment for that price is phenomenal. Even with the moonroof-ABS-traction control package, its barely over 15Gs (plus delivery, fees, and taxes). Fit and finish is superb, inside and out. With the traction control option, the car refuses to plough in the corners, and holds the road like its on rails, even in the wet. The gutsy 2.0 litre 140hp engine accelerates spiritedly, ride and handling are well-balanced, and NVH is minimal. Add the impressive warranty and 5 year unlimited mileage roadside assistance, and its a deal you cant refuse.

  • Fast, Fun and Features Oh My! - 2002 Hyundai Elantra
    By -

I am so very pleased with my Elantra after 5000km. I love it a little more each day. I adore the firm handling that really conveys road feel without being too harsh. The power is invigorating and makes the car fun to drive in manual form. If driven normaly, gas mileage is good for engine type and car weight. Features leave me wanting for nothing.
