This Year's Model Updates:

Hyundai's Elantra sedan was redesigned last year, but the big news for 2002 is the release of the GT version, an all-new five-door hatchback that boasts such upscale standard equipment as a leather-trimmed interior, European suspension tuning, four-wheel disc brakes, 15-inch wheels, foglamps and a CD player. In September 2002, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup -- the Elantra is now rated at 135 hp, rather than 140. To compensate, the company is offering owners (of 2000 models and newer) three options: 10 years of roadside assistance, 6-year/72,000-mile basic warranty coverage or 12-year/120,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultra-low price tag.
Cons:
  • Funky front styling details.

  • Luv my Hyundai - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I have owned my Hyundai Elantra for two years. I have not had any major mechanical problems. Only oil and tire changes. It has been a joy to own. The projected gas mileage stated on the dealer sticker is accurate. I love my Hyundai and am considering buying another one for my daughter!

Almost 104,000 miles. I drive this car. If I do 55 -60 mph I can get 32mpg Everything has held up well and hyundi dealer has been great. I do not use them for service but when i need them they have been there. I compared it to civic, coralla, focus etc. I can buy a new 2005 for less then my 2002.

  • other than mpg, a good car - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Its been about 11 months that Ive had this car now, and its survived plenty of city commuting and a cross- country road trip admirably. Generally, a very good car in both contexts. Surprisingly comfortable for a small car with a 63" driver...even on longer road trips. A little noisy at high speeds. Handles well.

  • Great Car & Fun to Drive - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Have had the car since it had 15,300 miles on it and now have 98,600 and it runs absolutely great. Took a 425 mile trip and got there on 9.967 gallons of gas!!! THATS 42.6 MPG!!! Way better milage than the sticker suggests! Looking at an 05 to replace it sometime in the future.

  • Nothing Special - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I bought the Elantra GT used (45,000 miles) and have owned it for 4 months. Like every vehicle on the market, you truly get what you pay for. Its been very reliable in getting me from point A to point B, but other than that, it offers very little. I feel its way too low to the ground and the pickup is as good as a lawnmower. I made the dealer replace the brakes because they were so loose, and on a few occasions it had trouble switching gears despite its automatic transmission. The stereo is weak and the "dinging" noise the car makes when the door is open is excruciating painful. Other than that, it has performed well and met my expectations, but I will upgrade within 6 months.

  • Overall Good Experience with this Car - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I had a good experience with this car overall but not good enough to buy another Hyundai. On the plus side, you get a lot of features for the money on the down side, you tend to get what you pay for. In 3 years, I never had any major problems (other than clutch going out after 12 months due to San Francisco hills), but had lots of minor problems: brake lights constantly going out, cruise control went out, CDs stuck in CD player, worn-out floor mats, paint dinged easily. That said, the car was mechanically sound and suited my needs well as a basic city car. Wouldnt buy another Hyundai, a) because I can afford something better now and b) because I cant get past its inherent cheapness.

  • ok for the money - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Good enough for a first car. Many small problems for a car with <35,000 miles. If you dont have alot of money its ok and better than a used car, but for a little more a Toyota has much more value and quality. Would not get another one.

  • LIFE SAVER! - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I bought this car in May, 2005 for my daughter (it only had 28000 miles). I own 2 mercedes and a vette, but this car was quite comfortable and well built for the price --- definitely a great value. On July 4, a drunk driver collided with my daughter head-on on the freeway (est. closing speed of 140 mph!). My daughter survived with bruises and a back injury which she will recover from --- but, she may have been killed or paralyzed in another car (as was the passenger of the other car). As I see it, this car saved her life!!!

  • Dont underestimate this car. - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

How many people have you heard complain about the quality of Hyundai? So had I. But I actually did this thing called "research" on the 2002 GLS. What did my research uncover? That there was no way Id find another car thatd let me walk out the door with all the standard options this car has, plus anti-theft, cruise control, spoiler and an AT for twelve four. Tax, title, registration and plates, people. Not to mention the beefy warrenty AND 24/7 roadside assistance for 5 years. I DEFY you to. It has looks I wouldnt get embarassed over to boot. Sure, it has its drawbacks, but the gains exceed those by a wide margin in this case.

The reviews by Edmunds.com was right on the money. I really feel like I bought a great car for less money. Great pick up, comfortable seats, and a nice looking car. My daily commute is now enjoyable. Everyone that has seen it is impressed. I truly recommend.
