This Year's Model Updates:

The Elantra received a slight refresh for this year in the form of a new hood, deck lid, front and rear bumpers, grille, headlamps and taillights. Interior revisions include a redesigned instrument cluster, vents, center console and climate controls. The engine has been fitted with continuously variable valve timing, and it is now sold in SULEV or ULEV configurations (depending on the state in which it's purchased) which offer horsepower ratings of 138 and 132, respectively. The base GLS model now offers remote keyless entry as standard equipment, while GT models now have a Kenwood CD/MP3 audio system as standard.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultralow price tag, long warranty.
Cons:
  • Poor offset crash test score, antilock brakes available only as a package option.

  • Why Pay More For a Honda or Toyota - 2004 Hyundai Elantra

The 5 door GT,has the ride and feel of cars costing 5 - 10 thousand dollars more. Good gas mileage, 27-29, very quiet and euro looking. Never thought Id like it till we drove it. Save your money as the warranty makes it worth owning

  • Elantra GT rocks!!! - 2004 Hyundai Elantra

I purchased a 2003 Elantra GT (pretty much same as the 04) and i ablsolutely love my car. As a 21 year old college student I was shocked that i could afford a car with leather seats, power everything, on a part time job. not to mention it sorta looks like a late model saab 9-3 (bonus!!!) For functionality, you cant beat it b/c of the hatch w/ fold down seats that fold completly flat with the trunk floor. It is a breeze to put almost anything in it, ive even put in 8 sheets of plywood without having to cut it!!

  • Best car to own - 2004 Hyundai Elantra

We bought this car based on all the information we obtained on Edmunds. This has been the best car we have ever owned. I handles like a dream, average MPG is 29.1 and we have not taken a highway trip yet. On back roads the Elantra GT does not lean into the turns and holds the road perfectly. The only problem was w/Hyundai they did not manufacture enough models w/ABS and we could not get the color we wanted w/all the options. We cannot praise this car enough you must own one to understand the enjoyment of having/owning a Hyundai Elantra GT.

  • Wouldnt buy anything other than Hyundai - 2004 Hyundai Elantra

I test drove the Hyundai Elantra Elite (top spec). Im from Australia. and its fantastic - I cant get over the quietness of the 2.0 litre 4 very refined and has plenty of up and go. interior is lovely and drivers seat adjustments are great. Comfortable seats, huge boot, and everything is standard and does everything quite well. My next car will be another Hyundai!

  • Reliable but Terrible in Bad Weather - 2004 Hyundai Elantra

I got a great price last year on my previous 2004 GT Hatchback with the Automatic Tranny. Not much pep and transmission was confused easily. Tires lost tread very quickly and gas mileage was a major disappointment average 22mpg due to having to floor it often. Inside is very nice but leather showed distress within a few months. Last winter spell was its last, nearly crashed serveral times going to work on light snow covered roads. Good cheap college car in dry flat climates but in Pittsburgh it was not going to cut it, got a 2005 Subaru Forester this weekend (7,500 more), no comparison and I finally dont have sweaty palms in snowy conditions.

  • Great Car, little money - 2004 Hyundai Elantra

My wife and I bought an 04 Elanra VE as our first car. Weve had it 6 months so far and other then the radios clock being fast, weve had no problems. The exterior looks of this car are great we love the front end especially. The warranty (in Canada its 7 year powertrain/5 year new car) was one of the main factors for purchasing this car. Fuel economy is not great, its OK, but I find my 95 Saturn gets more fuel range, but I drive it more on the highway so it is hard to compare. The VE comes with air, power locks, windows, mirrors (heated), keyless entry. The handling has a good combination of smoothness over bumps and stiffness when cornering. The engine is powerful enough for our needs.

I drove every other car I could compare this to. Nothing even came close to the Elantra Gt. Car for the dollar, Hyundai has it won. what do I have to worry about??? Absolutely nothing, I have a 10 year 100k warranty on this bad boy!!

  • all the way with Hyundai - 2004 Hyundai Elantra

I had a Tiburon 97, a Sonata 2000, an Elantra GT 2002, and now, since two months, an Elantra GT automatic 2004, the best of all Hyundai car that I have driven Why a Hyundai product totay? When I bought the Tiburon, it was because I was struck by the beauty of the car. But now I bought an Elantra GT 2004 because its again a very nice car, always a very reliable car, but mainly because its a car so fun to drive, and very generous in space for a guy of more thant six feet tall. Really Im proud of my Elantra GT 2004 red glaze. Finally, since more thant 8 years, I have always received a first class service from my Hyundai dealer

  • Nice car, needs more "GT" in the GT - 2004 Hyundai Elantra
    By -

This is my wifes car and was purchased three weeks after I got my Mazda 3s 5-door. Both cars have a real nice fit and finish. I would recommend either one for the long haul. Thats where the similarities end. The Elantra GT has bland looks. Not much separates it from the GLS sedan. The interior is nice, especially for the small amount it took to upgrade to the GT. On the peformance side, this is hardly worthy of the GT designation. The engine is reliable, but hardly a performer. The leather seats are slippery and unsupportive in turns. My biggest gripe would have to be the steering ratio. It takes too much movement to coax this car to turn. Nice reliable car, splurge for the 3s to add fun.
