This Year's Model Updates:

Hyundai's Elantra sedan was redesigned last year, but the big news for 2002 is the release of the GT version, an all-new five-door hatchback that boasts such upscale standard equipment as a leather-trimmed interior, European suspension tuning, four-wheel disc brakes, 15-inch wheels, foglamps and a CD player. In September 2002, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup -- the Elantra is now rated at 135 hp, rather than 140. To compensate, the company is offering owners (of 2000 models and newer) three options: 10 years of roadside assistance, 6-year/72,000-mile basic warranty coverage or 12-year/120,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultra-low price tag.
Cons:
  • Funky front styling details.

This is the first new car that I purchased and am glad to say that I choose Hyundai. I went to the dealership told them what I wanted and they delivered. I recently took my elantra on a road trip and it performened wonderfully. This is one car I would buy again.

Great for driving to work 60 miles a day. Looked at buying used but price with warranty buying it new was better deal. Did have throttle position sensor go out - driveable home and parked it. Called 800 road side service number, tow truck at house within the hour and towed 56 miles to dealership at no cost and repaired at no cost. Manifold cracked in 8/05 - already under recall notice so replaced at no charge. Good gas mileage, dependable, stand behind warranty. Best deal for work miles and just day-to-day running around. If you want to spend your money on a fashion statement find something else. If you want transporation this cant be beat.

I have had no real problems with this car. I wanted a vehicle that could haul my upright bass and other instruments but also had decent gas mileage. The Elantra hatchback fit the bill. It has performed marvelously. It has many of the ammenities of luxury cars at an affordable price. I liked the car so much, that we bought a 2002 Hyundai Accent hatchback as a second vehicle. By the way, it too can fit my double bass, but the neck does extend between the two front seats!

Drove to Columubus OH from Philly on one tank of gas - with AC! I truly enjoy driving my Hyundai, recommend the manual transmission to zip around and compete with the V6s on the roads these days. My husband has a 2000 Honda Civic and I much, much prefer my Hyundai. Just turned over 40,000 miles and drive my car hard with no problems!

Overall a neat car. my only complaint so far are the sweaty leather seats, would rather have cloth. As to horsepower, the specs say 140 HP. If this engine has 140HP, they must be Shetland ponies. My 1995 ford contour with a 2.0 litre 4 cyl. (122hp), and my 1995 ford probe with a 2.0 litre 4 cyl. (118hp)both have a lot more power than this one. The car does handle nicely and the hatchback is what I wanted. Just wish it really had 140HP.

  • Great value - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I bought this car as a compromise between practicality (no more station wagon) and fun. I found the car to have more safety features (ABS, side air bags, TCS) and luxury items (leather seating, remote control mirrors) than any other similar vehicle. Can be stuffed full of cargo for trips, pulls 1000 lb motorcycle/trailer, lots of pep (never felt sluggish except when passing at high speeds - fully loaded - which I shouldnt be doing anyway). No repairs in three years. Great warranty, roadside asst plan.

  • Three Years, Still Love It - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Its been a wonderful experience so far. One small plastic failure, otherwise nothing but consumables. Still fun to drive, still feels solid. I miss the ABS and the interior noise at highway speeds is more than Id like. The experience is good enough that my wife bought a duplicate a year later. Were both pleased with the decisions.

  • What a surprise - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Bought this for my wife a year ago. She likes is better than her 1996 Saturn which we now seldom drive since it has become the dingy for our RV. We both feel with higher seating and more leg room up front it is more comfortable than the Saturn on both short and long trips. It is well appointed with all of the controls in easy, logical reach. Its peppy and handles well in traffic. Our friends who are rather tall even have room in the back seat. And to top it all off, it looks great.

  • Excellent Car - I was Surprised!!! - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Im at 35,000 miles on my Elantra GT and have loved every bit of the driving. Car warranty is excellent and valuable. The car has just been fantastic. Im glad I did not buy a Honda or Toyota based on reputation alone. Rather, I did my research on Hyundai, found out that their mgmt changed in the late 1990s and that their new focus was on quality. That shows through with their new models, so if you are a Hyundai hater, then you are just misinformed. Take a test drive! These are fantastic cars and I have high standards!!! Hands down better value than civic or corolla, plus you get the warranty. Only downside is resale value. If you buy one, plan to drive it for a long time.

  • Really a great car for the price - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I rolled off the showroom floor with 4 miles and have had little to no problems. Initially, had some problems with the transmission mounts but Hyundai was quick to fix with no cost. Also some stereo issues. Keeps shorting out for some reason. As it gets older, the engine makes a little more noise. Exhaust sounds from the engine compartment is the most noticeable. Overall, Id buy another one in a heartbeat. What an awesome car with excellent features. IT ALWAYS STARTS!!!!!
