Model Overview:

Since its launch for the 2003 model year, the Honda Pilot has helped shape the market for crossover SUVs with three rows of seating. Offering V6 power, respectable fuel economy, a comfortable ride, plenty of interior space and seven-to-eight-passenger seating, the Pilot is exactly the kind of vehicle that appeals to growing families who are leery of traditional minivans. Other crossover SUVs might be sportier to drive or more stylish on the inside, but Honda's three-row crossover appeals to your practical side and packs in a lot of functionality.

Choosing a Pilot is straightforward, as Honda packages equipment in a few basic trim levels rather than offering countless options. Regardless of the year, all Honda Pilots give you three useful rows of seating and lots of storage slots, though early models are smaller and aren't quite as accommodating for teenagers in the third row. Cargo capacity has also increased over the years.

We are amazed how this vehicle does so many things well. It has all the functionality of an SUV, but on the road it rides more like a luxury car! Its truly the best riding vehicle we have ever owned.

We have had our Pilot for a little over a month. Weve taken it to Lake Tahoe, and around town of course. It climbed the mountains and handled the corners with ease on the way to Tahoe. Im anxious for winter to come so I can test the AWD system as I head to the ski resorts. The vehicle is incredibly comfortable (I suppose thats subjective based on each persons comfort level), and the interior is very nicely laid out. I actually look forward to road trips since we have more room to spread out. We will probably have the 3rd row folded down 99% of the time. With that, there is a lot of cargo space in the back. There is even a fair amount of room with the 3rd row up. My wife and I have two young boys, and they it is nice that their car seats are far enough away so that they cannot reach each other. No more fists flying back and forth between the two of them as was the case in our 06 CRV, which we kept since it is a great vehicle in its own right. The touchscreen radio takes a little getting used to, but it is easy to navigate once you get the hang of it. We were considering purchasing a Tahoe or Explorer, but are very happy we went with the Pilot. We are looking forward to having the Pilot as our family car for many years to come.

We just bought a Pilot Ex in January 2004. We had looked at the Toyota Highlander which also has 3rd row seating. I am 51 and when I sat in the 3rd row my knees were almost up to my chest. It is a very uncomfortable seat. The Pilot has comfotable seats throughout. The drivers seat gives you the benefit of enjoying the entire road. The 2nd row is also very comfortable with plenty of leg room and exceptional head room. If youre looking for a SUV thats not as big as the Excursion or as small as the Geo Tracker, this is the vehicle for you. It gives you the feel of a strong vehicle but not the feel of a big diesel truck.

Traded up from our troublesome 2000 Tahoe LS. Excellent in every respect.

  • Cavernous - 2003 Honda Pilot

It has a very solid, if not heavy feel. It handles well for an SUV. A quiet, comfortable ride. The radio can be loud without being annoying. The fit and finish is perfect. A huge center console wont have you and your significant other jockeying for elbow space. The front seating is cavernous. More front space than the much larger Sequoia and maybe even the Tahoe. The car feels slightly underpowered, surprising at 240 HP. You can floor it for more power of course, but the transmission will not-so-seamlessly downshift and the engine will quietly yell at you. I just filled my first tank since the purchase and if I did the math correctly, I got 14.9 MPG city

I still love my 2004 Pilot but the new one is even better, which I still have a hard time believing as I liked the old one so well and still drive. Have driven over 2,000 miles and as usual with Honda, do not have to take back to the dealer until st oil change. Honda has really improved storage and the rear entertainment system is fantastic for grandchildren.
