Model Overview:

Since its launch for the 2003 model year, the Honda Pilot has helped shape the market for crossover SUVs with three rows of seating. Offering V6 power, respectable fuel economy, a comfortable ride, plenty of interior space and seven-to-eight-passenger seating, the Pilot is exactly the kind of vehicle that appeals to growing families who are leery of traditional minivans. Other crossover SUVs might be sportier to drive or more stylish on the inside, but Honda's three-row crossover appeals to your practical side and packs in a lot of functionality.

Choosing a Pilot is straightforward, as Honda packages equipment in a few basic trim levels rather than offering countless options. Regardless of the year, all Honda Pilots give you three useful rows of seating and lots of storage slots, though early models are smaller and aren't quite as accommodating for teenagers in the third row. Cargo capacity has also increased over the years.

  • Great Family Car! - 2003 Honda Pilot

Honda has come through once again with a practical, family friendly, fun to drive vehicle. My three kids fit comfortably in the second row seat and we have room for their friends when we need to with the flip up third row. I am grateful to no longer drive a minivan. Just watch out for dealer mandatory accessory packages that are unneccessary and make it more costly than it should be. I have the EX with Leather and the DVD and its perfect as is without any accessories!

  • From a truck-based to a car-based SUV - 2003 Honda Pilot

Having driven a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo for three years, the transition to the Pilot was easy and welcome. The ride is much more comfortable and the cabin noise is considerably less and the pick-up is great. The cargo space is far superior and since I dont tow a boat, the comparison to US SUVs puts the Pilot ahead in my case.

I love my Honda Pilot! It rides nice and smooth like a car. I love everything about it. The only negative I have to say is that it doesnt get the best gas mileage and that the stereo system could be better, but its comparable to most SUVs. I will definitely buy another. I LOVE IT!

  • Its OK. Some good. Some bad. - 2016 Honda Pilot

Ive had my Pilot since March 2016. It replaced a Mazda CX-9 that was hit from the side by a red light runner who totaled it. I wanted to get another CX-9, but no one had any in stock locally and I needed a replacement car immediately, I didnt feel paying an extra $5k for the EX was worth it, so I got an LX. I basically needed AC/heat, power windows, bluetooth for the phone, and a backup camera. Everything else was useless to me. Paid $34k cash bottom line. I needed an 8 seater since I have 3 kids and they have friends who need rides too. I looked at the Traverse, Highlander, etc... . Theyre all kind of the same. Got the Honda mainly based on reputation. Its an OK vehicle. Gets me from point A to B safely and comfortably. I dont like it as much as my CX-9 though for a few reasons. It doesnt accelerate as well as the CX-9. It doesnt coast well. It downshifts quickly and I find myself having to give it gas when coasting to a red light since it goes from 35 to 20 in 5 seconds on a flat road due to unneeded down shifting. My CX-9 was better at sensing it didnt need HP so it stayed in a higher gear. it also has an issue with the break pedal that others have mentioned. If you stop, after a while, the break pedal will go down like its losing air. I always fear that if the red light stays red too long, I might hit bottom and not be able to stop. Not sure if it would ever actually happen. Its not a bad car. Im just not overly impressed at this point in time.

Poor people engineering and finish. The dash board has rattled since the day I drove it home. Two attempts to correct it failed. The console is loose. I was told that it was "poor design by Honda". The first time that I tried to pull one of the second row seats forward the release bar came off in my hand. Driving with the front windows down is impossible because of the sound created. Space and time do not allow for all of the inattention to common sense detailing. I previoulsy owned a Ford Explorer for 8 years and 176,000 miles that was much smarter.

Moving up from a 1993 minivan. Big improvement. Very car-like ride for its size. Excellent handling, very good driving position. Headlights do a superior job illuminating the road. AC cools very rapidly & rear unit can be controlled from 2nd row if desired. Radio/CD player is fine to these non- audiophile ears. Center console has tons of storage. Lots of room w/ 3rd row seats folded down. Early evaluation is very positive.

the gas tank is a bit short so, one has to go to the gas station often. I would love to see a hybrid version.

  • Funny what the editors pick as best - 2006 Honda Pilot
    By -

Funny how the editors pick the Ford as "Best SUV" when they rate it lower than the Pilot, its smaller, gets worse fuel economy, is less safe, MUCH less reliable, and its "true cost to own" by their own rating over 5 years is over $10,000 more. Gee, thats a no brainer to me. Ill keep my Pilot any day.
