Model Overview:

Since its launch for the 2003 model year, the Honda Pilot has helped shape the market for crossover SUVs with three rows of seating. Offering V6 power, respectable fuel economy, a comfortable ride, plenty of interior space and seven-to-eight-passenger seating, the Pilot is exactly the kind of vehicle that appeals to growing families who are leery of traditional minivans. Other crossover SUVs might be sportier to drive or more stylish on the inside, but Honda's three-row crossover appeals to your practical side and packs in a lot of functionality.

Choosing a Pilot is straightforward, as Honda packages equipment in a few basic trim levels rather than offering countless options. Regardless of the year, all Honda Pilots give you three useful rows of seating and lots of storage slots, though early models are smaller and aren't quite as accommodating for teenagers in the third row. Cargo capacity has also increased over the years.

  • Transmission failed - 2016 Honda Pilot

I purchased my 2016 Honda Pilot in September of 2015. I was fairly happy with the purchase, but I did notice some unusual transmission experiences. Well this week, it got worse. The gears banged into place and made loud noises. Sometimes it would not shift and just stay in gear with the engine revving really high and then banging into the next gear. The problem? The cooling coil in the transmission failed causing anti-freeze and trans fluid to mix throughout the transmission and the cooling system. According to the dealership, this is the third one theyve seen like this in their shop. They also told me that their friends who work at the Acura dealer nearby are having the exact same issue with the MDX. They are going to replace my transmission and flush the cooling system. The car has 18,000 miles on it.

  • A good buy - 2003 Honda Pilot

We had our pilot for 350 miles when we took a 1000 mile round trip through the mountains of Pennsylvania. We averaged 21.4 mpg. Commuting to work the average is 16.7. I am 64", the headroom enables me to wear a hat if I wish. Everyone who rides in the pilot (even in the third seat) comments on the good ride. Areally good buy that wont depreciate quickly!

  • Have everything you need, missing some wants - 2016 Honda Pilot

Overall a great buy. Excellent mileage for a vehicle this size. I consistently track 23.5 mpg on city roads + interstate commute. Very roomy. Longer than regular SUVs and hence need a full garage length to park it. Great exteriors. Highway lights could be a little better in rainy conditions. The interior has everything you would want, but a few items one may want are missing. Navigation has active traffic - estimated time of arrival and best route are not always correct. I have learnt to rely on apps such as Waze if i am in a traffic situation as opposed to the navigation. Bluetooth connection is awful - I have an iPhone 6S and bluetooth connection does not always transfer to the in car system despite the display showing a successful connection. Make sure you buy a model with the honda sensing package. The leather in the elite model is much better than the touring model. Pros: Roomy, comfortable, mileage, everything i need is there. Parking, Lane keep assist and ACC are absolutely fantastic Cons: Interior finish could be more elite, bluetooth navigation could be more reliable

  • Finally - The Perfect SUV! - 2006 Honda Pilot

My wife and I are both teachers and research nuts when it comes to purchasing a new vehicle. We have always had good fortune with Honda and a few of the Toyotas we’ve owned, but after six months with our Pilot, we’ve come to the conclusion that this is the first vehicle we’ve owned that has performed to perfection. We’re averaging over 22 mpg, (city and some freeway), and the comfort on long trips is spectacular. We had a mishap driving into L.A. with an obstacle on the freeway – at 75 mph we had to jerk the wheel and switch lanes then back again to avoid a crash. The VSA (vehicle stability assist) worked as advertised and saved our lives. Thank you, Honda, for surpassing our expectations.

  • Great SUV - 2006 Honda Pilot

We purchased in April after owning MBZ 320, & 2- Expeditions. Evaluated Grand Cherokee, Toyotas, Accura MDX. Liked MDX but $7k more for upgraded "Pilot" was not worth it, so we got the EX-L. Mileage 22 hwy consistent at 75, great interior design, room, comfort, creature features galore-well thought out compared to MDX base model, Pilot is a great value ~ like 6 cd in dash standard. Speakers not so good with 155 w, 7 speaker system, so we did aftermarket upgrade to Eclipse~ 1000% improvment. Road noise from Goodyears cant wait to replace w/ Michelins. Overall, great value.

  • An outstanding vehicle! - 2005 Honda Pilot

I have put 1000 miles on and LOVE my new SUV... recommend it to anyone in the market for a flexible SUV - especially good because I can fit 2 car seats in the middle and still seat an adult between them (short trips only) ... couldnt do that in my mini-van!

  • Fuel mileage overrated - 2010 Honda Pilot
    By -

I have only driven 4000KMs; like the handling and power of this vehicle but am terribly disappointed with gas mileage. If I had known it was this bad I would not have bought this vehicle. My 8 cylinder pickup was better when towing. Its not bad when driven a long distance on the highway when not towing. Honda has severely overrated the mileage of this vehicle. It is not even close to the numbers they suggest. Towing mileage is brutal, 20.1 lts/hundred over 300kms. They should have installed a bigger tank because you are constantly stopping for fuel. I find this vehicle has a lot of road noise compared to my last vehicle. Its possible its the type of tires but it should be better.

  • A good choice - 2006 Honda Pilot

I have put over 10K miles on the Pilot and I have had no problems or issues. It drives very smooth and handles great. I finally have used it in the snow and it feels very secure. I have owned three SUVs (MB, Jeep x2) and the Honda is the best value and fit.
