Model Overview:

Sold from 2003-'11, the Honda Element compact crossover SUV remains one of the most distinctive and practical vehicles on the road. Happy Element owners are often city dwellers who appreciate both its small size and generous 75-cubic-foot maximum cargo capacity. Another notable element about the Element is the ability of its access-style rear doors to pivot backward a full 90 degrees, providing unimpeded access to the roomy and creatively configurable rear seats.

A used Element of any vintage is easy to recommend thanks to its functional interior, smooth four-cylinder engine and carlike handling, not to mention Honda's reputation for reliability. That said, it's worthwhile to focus your search on 2007 and newer models, as they offer a bit more power and enhanced safety features.

  • Honda Element EX is GREAT! - 2005 Honda Element

Wow! I just bought a Honda Element EX and it is so cool! Youre likely to get funny looks from people, but this is a really great car and quite versatile. It has great pickup, cool features, a lot of flexibility for carrying gear or up to 4 adventurers (extra cargo space required if traveling with 4--use the roof rack). Also, you gotta love the suicide doors.

I had a wonderful time with my orange 2003 Element. The combination of reasonable fuel economy (for an SUV), a large amount of carrying space and versatility made for a great experience. Great for passengers and cargo alike. Im really going to miss putting my bikes and kayak in the back of it. Unfortunately, I had to say goodbye to it as I recently experienced a rollover accident, and the car is totaled. **It held up very well under the circumstances**. The car did a complete rollover and landed on its tires. I was lucky, plus wearing a seatbelt, and walked away without injury.

I love my ELEMENT but.. BEWARE...2 ISSUES. 1. I drive on a busy interstate everyday and my windshield looks sandblasted. Other vehicles I have driven on the same highway never pitted so easily. There are also 2 cracks in each of the lower corners of the windshield that are apparently a defect in the mounting surface that HONDA published a TSB for the problem. 2. COMPOSITE PANELS WILL START TO PIT AND DETERIORATE IF YOU DRIVE IN SNOWY AREAS WHERE ROAD SALT IS COMMON! I washed my ELEMENT all the time during this past winter and the bottoms of the composite panels around the wheels still started to pit very badly from the corrosive rock salt!

  • Love it with two small exceptions - 2006 Honda Element

The Element is perfect for my lifestyle. I race bicycles and camp quite a bit. Throwing the bike in the back without taking it apart is great, sleeping in the Element at the race site or anywhere is a nice option. Lots of room to change clothes, eat lunch or whatever else. You wont believe how much stuff you can fit in the back (I recently moved). Super easy to clean. Drives just fine yet you certainly know when there is a cross wind but that makes it a little more interesting to drive. Gas mileage is right on target. A few suggestions, see below but really the Element is a great vehicle.

I wanted to buy a versatile vehicle like the CRV but instead drove out of the dealership with an Element. This is a very poorly thought out vehicle. Example, when you fold up the rear seats to make more room it actually blocks your side window access when you are backing up.This vehicle weighs almost 3,500 lbs and the standard "Accord" powerplant strains to pull it around. My AWD gas mileage city/hwy average 21-22 per gallon. The weight distribution of the "AWD" v.s. the "2 wheel" drive is noticeably different and the vehicles drive differently( I have driven both versions).

  • Love it - 2005 Honda Element

We got the magnesium loaded EX AWD with fog lights because having those bulbous orbits empty seems silly. The rear is great for moving baby in and out in the car seat and being able to move to the back to calm baby without having to get out like when we had a Civic. We love the interior -everyone we know think its awesome even those who think it looks ugly are sold when the check out the inside.

  • So far - so good. - 2005 Honda Element

No problems and seems to have plenty of power compared to the Toyota 4 Runner I traded in, plus it gets better mileage. It would be nice if it would get 30 MPG but it wont. Rear sunroof is a waste.

  • Suits my needs just fine - 2005 Honda Element

I am pretty rough on cars & when i first looked at the elment i knew right away that its utilitarian style would definitely suit my needs. Im sort of short, so theres a LOT of headroom anywhere in the car for me...so im 99% sure a giant could fit. the only bummer is the gas mileage isnt ideal, its not HORRIBLE but still i feel slightly guilty about driving a car that gets under 30mpg.

  • Awesome!!! - 2005 Honda Element

Suv thats lots of fun to drive! Great in the snow, plenty of pep to get up the big hills. Good stereo, tons of room. Good heater/air conditioner. Lots of storage space.

  • Slightly dissapointed in Honda - 2004 Honda Element

Instrument panel Gauges have black background and are deeply recessed and extremely hard to read in daytime. Seats are too firm and not very comfortable. Even though I have the EX model, there is no button on front passenger door to lock or unlock both front doors. Also, the door lock button (master) on drivers door has a real cheap plastic feel to it. Rear seat entry/exit is difficult. Rear seats are very heavy and awkward to remove or fold up. When folded, the upstruct rear quarter view. Love the looks of vehicle, and it is fun to drive. No problems so far.
