Model Overview:

Sold from 2003-'11, the Honda Element compact crossover SUV remains one of the most distinctive and practical vehicles on the road. Happy Element owners are often city dwellers who appreciate both its small size and generous 75-cubic-foot maximum cargo capacity. Another notable element about the Element is the ability of its access-style rear doors to pivot backward a full 90 degrees, providing unimpeded access to the roomy and creatively configurable rear seats.

A used Element of any vintage is easy to recommend thanks to its functional interior, smooth four-cylinder engine and carlike handling, not to mention Honda's reputation for reliability. That said, it's worthwhile to focus your search on 2007 and newer models, as they offer a bit more power and enhanced safety features.

My 2003 Honda Element is the "Y" package model. I get about 22 miles to the Canadian(Imperial)gallon in the city. I am also disappointed that there is only one intermittent speed selection for the windshied wiper. The windshield washer is weak and aims too low to be effective while driving at speeds in excess of 30 mph. The ride is a bit rocky. The drivers arm rest is located much too low and is rendered pretty useless. The internal heaters and blowers are excellently impressive, provide plenty of heat at a very relatively quick response after starting in sub-zero weather of -30degrees. The Air conditioning is also very good (in the summer).

2003 Honda Element EX AWD w/ manual transmission. This vehicle is fun to drive, handles great and drives very good in the snow. The short wheel base allows some amazingly tight turns. You need to get the fog lights and side crash bars for asthetics. Getting in and out with the side step is much easier too. The optional arm rest/cargo box is mostly useless, I keep it up all of the time. The sun roof is is in the wrong place and not electric. American versions cannot get heated seats and mirrors even though the hardware in the seats is there. I love this vehicle. Its very practical and versatile. Fuel milage varies with driving style. My girlfriend gets 26MPG I get 22MPG.

  • Honda Element: Utilitarian all the way! - 2005 Honda Element

Ive had this care for about 7 months and am so happy. The car is very utilitarian, there has not been anything that I cannot fit in this car. The seats fold up to the sides, and even come out (very easily). I mtn. bike and can fit two full suspension bikes w/o taking the tires off and still have room for my gear. The car is very easy to clean and gets great gass mileage. Get this car, you will not regret it!

I chose the 5sp 4wd EX. Really like it - happy to be seen in such a funky vehicle. Love the suicide doors and removeable back seats - easy to load large items. But, back seats are a little cumbersome to remove and re- install. Salesman made it look much easier. Sun roof should be towards the front and power. Pillars on each side of front windshield too wide - block vision. Very comfortable ride. Cant wait to use it to go camping. I may have rated it a little low for fuel economy - my first SUV. Last car was a civic coupe - great on gas!

I have owned lots of cars, from sports cars to Suburbans to pickup trucks. This is the best! I am an older woman with dogs and an active lifestyle. My husband and I are also King-Sized people and the dogs are Golden Retrievers. We go to dog shows, we drove back and forth to Florida twice, we even go offroad! This car is fabulous AND comfortable. And my i-Pod fits right into it with awesome sound from the sub-woofer. The car is fantastic on our steep driveway in NY for the winters, and great on the sandy beaches. And it is so easily cleaned --- no dog hairs! I think the design is funky and I just love it.

  • Engine Trouble - 2003 Honda Element

I had the car one month and took it back to the dealer for engine noise and was advised it needed a new short block engine. The dealership advised it was 2.5 qts of oil low and threw a rod at 1700 miles. I dont want a car with a rebuit engine.

i purchesed the gallopagose green for its conservative appeal. the paint has held up well through ice, mud and shopping carts! the fuel economy is good with out the a/c on but is poor when on. the inside is well suited for on the go people, like my two shepherds a bike and me! overall i could not have asked for a more versatile mini-suv for the price. thanks honda! glenn houton, tx

  • Honda Element -- user friendly in spades - 2004 Honda Element

My wife bought a 2 wheel DX in 03, I just picked up my AWD DX 3/31/04 and I have already bonded with it. Owning an Element is like having a reliable friend. I know it sounds corny, but it is true. I use it mostly with my road bike and plan to use it for camping at music festivals. All things considered, I just cant imagine a better all-around vehicle.
