This Year's Model Updates:

Honda redesigns its cars and trucks every four to five years, whether they need it or not. For 2001, it's the Honda Civic's turn. Larger inside and out, with more powerful engines but a less sophisticated suspension, coupes and sedans return in familiar DX, LX and EX trims, while HX models come with two doors only. The GX Sedan is powered by natural gas. Unfortunately, the hatchback dies just when Americans are once again figuring out how useful they can be, and the sporty Si goes on hiatus for a year or two.

Pros:
  • Fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly engines, reputation for durability, neato CVT transmission, likely to retain a healthy chunk of original value, impressive crash-test scores.
Cons:
  • Si goes bye-bye, gotta get the EX or GX for ABS, vanilla-flavored sedan styling.

  • the car that almost was - 2001 Honda Civic

I was currently driving a 1999 Civiv EX and loved it. I figured I could trade up. Boy did I make a mistake! I had tranny problems at first. It would not shift out of third gear (auto). It somehow worked itself out. The suspension is not great. I took it in and they replaced the rear bushings under warrantee. It seems to have fixed the problem. The seats are uncomfortable and it needs an arm rest like the 03 has. The gas milage, as with most Hondas, never quite lives up to the sticker. I get 26 avarage and dont have a lead foot. When new, the tank had no seal and leaked when topping off tank.

  • Major regrets - 2001 Honda Civic

I bought this car hoping for good gas mileage and reliability and have been disappointed on both counts. The front struts have been replaced once already and probably need to be replaced again, given that it sounds like a gunshot has been fired everytime I go over the smallest bump in the road. Interior is very cheap - the cover for the door handle falls off about every week and has no screw to keep it in place. It is basically an embarrassment to let anyone ride in this car. Gas mileage is average (25-30mpg), at best.

Excellent reliability so far. Nothing unexpected.

I have had the car for 6 yrs and have only put 38000 miles on it due to the fact that its parked more often than not. First it was the tranny then the head gasket then the front end right now its the valve cover gaskets [oil in my plugs] and the 4 ignition coils [auto stores want app. 50 bucks each thank god for Amazon got for 60] I used to think Honda was good. Now I no they are good GOOD FOR NOTHING Would not recommend to my worst enemy .

  • Honda-perfect for communting - 2001 Honda Civic

I have an hour commute to work every day, and my Honda has made this affordable. It is reliable and fuel- efficient, and I love to drive it! My car handles wet and snowy roads as well as dry ones, and I never worry about getting stuck anywhere in it. When I need speed to get out of a pinch, there isnt a problem. This car gets me comfortably where I need to go.

  • Barely Acceptable if it were a Chevy - 2001 Honda Civic

Poor performance(slow, loud, bouncy ride)poor build quality(sunroof failed and needed replacement, speakers rattle, big panel gaps)pitiful dealer service at Miller Honda Culver City CA (slow turn around time, poor service advice, surly service advisors). Brakes wear out at 10k miles, battery failes at 24 months. Overall a pitiful car and a pitiful ownership experience. I dont think Honda is trying as hard as it used to with this model.

  • A car you always have to think about... - 2001 Honda Civic

Dont be fooled by Hondas claim that youre buying a car "you never have to think about". Quite the opposite. Both of my 2001s had a multitude of problems, small some large: (1) Transmission major downshift and late shift issues, fluid burn, power loss. (2) Rotors need cut every 10,000 miles. (3) Gas gauge reads incorrectly. (4) Window motor locks up. (5) Fog lights crack repeatedly (poor design, lenses too thin). (6) Front end vibration. (7) Call pulls to right, even with alignment & new tires. (8) Front bumper and roof moulding issues. (10) Rear brake squeak. (12) Gas mileage 6 mpg worse than claim.

This is my 3rd Civic, I still have my 1992 with 150,000 miles on it, these are the best cars on the road.

  • civic is fun to drive - 2001 Honda Civic

I got this car because I wanted something economical. And that is what the Civic is very economical. I average 31-33 MPG which is great considering that I drive mostly in the city. But what I like most is how responsive this car is. It is almost unbelieveable how when you hit around 3000 RPMs and you can feel and hear the VTEC working hard. Great car overall!

  • It worked for me, and I love it! - 2001 Honda Civic

I bought my 2001 Civic in June, 01, and it has been perfect since the get go. I was smart and bought the 5-speed, because an automatic with a 115 HP engine is not as quick. This thing moves. It wont win any races, but it is plenty to get me going on the freeway. Its pretty roomy, unless you are over six feet tall. Oh, and the Accord does not offer any more leg room for any seat. I am six feet tall, and I love this car. Plus, it looks great, especially with my Thule racks on top. It looks like a Passat or other European sedan with the high rear end, but I only paid 13,900 for it. I recommend it, and I havent had any problems. A great car.
