This Year's Model Updates:

Honda redesigns its cars and trucks every four to five years, whether they need it or not. For 2001, it's the Honda Civic's turn. Larger inside and out, with more powerful engines but a less sophisticated suspension, coupes and sedans return in familiar DX, LX and EX trims, while HX models come with two doors only. The GX Sedan is powered by natural gas. Unfortunately, the hatchback dies just when Americans are once again figuring out how useful they can be, and the sporty Si goes on hiatus for a year or two.

Pros:
  • Fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly engines, reputation for durability, neato CVT transmission, likely to retain a healthy chunk of original value, impressive crash-test scores.
Cons:
  • Si goes bye-bye, gotta get the EX or GX for ABS, vanilla-flavored sedan styling.

  • Great Until Transmission Went Out - 2001 Honda Civic

I bought this car new. Automatic. No problems at all until transmission went out at 86,000 miles. Will cost me $2600 to replace with a used transmission with 46,000 miles on it. Ouch! What a surprise! My car before this, a 1991 Honda Accord, had 230,000 on it when I got rid of it and no transmission trouble. My next car will be another Honda Accord.

First Honda I had purchased and I love it! Have owned Chevy and Ford small cars and this Civic outclasses them all - by a wide gap. I really like that the car is still worth something after having it for a while. I would definately buy another and recommend one to others. My wife likes to drive it too. I am 63" and fit into it okay. I commute a lot and the fuel economy is excellent!I bought it to commute and that it does that very, very well.

  • Not as good as I thought it would be - 2001 Honda Civic

A previous Toyota owner. Bought brand new. Driven for almost 5 years. Consideing its a small car, accelation and braking is fine and spacious inside. Easy and simple to use inside layout. Check engine light came on and off and stayed on. Turned out a major tranny(torque converter) problem covered under warranty, which would have cost close to 2K at dealer. Squeaky noises from suspensions on and off. Driving is very bouncy(No. I dont mean smooth here. still felt every bump, though. whats up with this?) but straight. Rattles from behind somewhere on and off. MPG is not as good as advertised. Overall decent but not excellent. Honda reliablity and sporty driving. None there with this Civic.

My Civic has been an extremely reliable car with excellent gas mileage. The performance is more than acceptable considering the cost and efficiency.

  • Satisfied but desire more attention - 2001 Honda Civic

I bought my 01 Civic new. I love the gas mileage and I find the car to be quite peppy. The styling is decent (interior and exterior.) The car has quality but for a Honda compact sedan I would expect a bit more. First, my insurance has gone up because Civics are expensive to repair. I am not to impressed with the Firestone Tires which were bald after 30,000 miles. The car is noisey at high speeds and uncomfortable for driver and passenger on long trips. Occassionally the brakes squeak, and just recently my gas tank release lever stopped working and I couldnt get my gas tank open.

  • Honda Reliable - 2001 Honda Civic

Buy a Honda new if you can. Maintain it...so far I have 174,000 trouble free miles with scheduled maintenance suggested by Honda. Car is a bit noisy inside, comfort level is adequate. Get about 32 mpg on highway.

  • Wear your earplugs while driving - 2001 Honda Civic

A 2001 Civic EX with 52000 miles on it for $9995 sounds like a dream come true until you own it for a week and the true quality of this car appears. I always believed Honda to be an excellent manufacturer but this purchase has made me think otherwise. The only plus to this car is the fuel economy. The roof, dash, door panels, center console, and truck all rattle. Terrible suspension. What happened to the old Honda?

  • 58000 miles without a problem - 2001 Honda Civic
    By -

I have had the car for almost 4 years now, with 58000 miles and nothing but oil changes and a 30000 mile check up. Car still has great acceleration and even the OEM tires. It is no sports car by any means, but a very reliable car with sporty aspirations.

  • Civics - 2001 Honda Civic

I love my car. The only disappointment I have in the car that I have had for the past four years is the fact that it seems to dent very easily. The slightest tap will dent the car. But as far as reliability and performance, I love the car.
