This Year's Model Updates:

Honda redesigns its cars and trucks every four to five years, whether they need it or not. For 2001, it's the Honda Civic's turn. Larger inside and out, with more powerful engines but a less sophisticated suspension, coupes and sedans return in familiar DX, LX and EX trims, while HX models come with two doors only. The GX Sedan is powered by natural gas. Unfortunately, the hatchback dies just when Americans are once again figuring out how useful they can be, and the sporty Si goes on hiatus for a year or two.

Pros:
  • Fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly engines, reputation for durability, neato CVT transmission, likely to retain a healthy chunk of original value, impressive crash-test scores.
Cons:
  • Si goes bye-bye, gotta get the EX or GX for ABS, vanilla-flavored sedan styling.

  • Love my Honda! - 2001 Honda Civic

This is one of 2 Hondas I have owned. I have also owned an Accord that I sold with 250K. I bought my Civic new in 2001 and I have over 120K on it now. My grandfather would not let me park my foriegn car in his drive way even though the radiator was built locally. I have had zero repairs. I dont follow the maintenance schedule, and I have beat it up a little. It is a zippy little car for heavy traffic but powerful enough for highway traffic. I use synthetic oil. It isnt as comfortable as my old car (Pontiac) and the timing belt maintenance was expensive, but I am still extremely happy with it. I plan to drive it into the ground and I will probably buy another.

  • Beware - 2001 Honda Civic

I bought my cCvic used with 58k and immediately began having problems. First electrical(my headlights stopped working, after i fixed that i had to replace the struts (which were completly shot) at 65k then the wheel bearings, then with only 100k on it the tranny blew. I was lucky and it only cost me 2k for a used tranny. The SRS light is on and the dealership says my airbags dont work, drivers side window motor is starting to go out, the suspension needs a new axle and struts again. I would personally look into buying either a 2000 or older Civic if interested unless you like throwing money away. Great gas mileage and doesnt leak oil yet, knock on wood...

  • wonderful car - 2001 Honda Civic

I have owned this car for 2 years, and have had relatively few problems with it. It is very reliable, gets great gas mileage, and I can always depend on it to get me where I need to go. However, my car gets hit every few months. I dont know if it is the paint that makes it hard to see, or what, but I have been in 3 accidents in it. It has also been hit by hail 4 times in one year. I think the car is jinked. Those are the only reasons the car has been in the shop. It has never let me down, and is fun to drive.

  • My 3rd Honda Civic - 2001 Honda Civic

I first had a 93 Civic coupe that lasted me 8 long years, then an 04 Civic hybrid, and now I bought this one in March 07. I bought it used with 72K miles on it, and I now have about 84K. When I bought it, I put new tires on it, new alignment, new water pump, and new timing belt. It has run perfectly the entire time Ive had it.

  • Dependable? - 2001 Honda Civic

I purchased this car in March oh 2004 and it already had 115,00 miles on it. Being a Honda, the miles didnt bother me since I had a 1990 Accord that was still going strong with no problems. However I must say this car has not been as good as the old Accord. It needed front struts on it only months after I got it. The a/c compressor went bad shortly thereafter. Now the alternator needs replaced. However I will say the car now has 148,000 miles and still doesnt leak any oil or burn it either. I change it every 4000 miles and never have to add any oil between changes. It has an automatic tranny that is beginning to slip, only when its cold for now. Hoping to get 200,000 before it bites the dust!

  • I expected better from Honda - 2001 Honda Civic

I have been a long time believer in Honda but the 2001 Civic DX has really let me down. Apart from the small things that keep breaking...(gas cap release, peeling upholstery, constantly locking seal belts, the biggest dissappointment has been the pathetic suspension. The MacPherson struts had to be replaced at 30K. Now at 45K I am faced with having them replaced again. Honda has been very good at fixing everything under warranty, but Im going to trade the car in, because things arent going to stop breaking when the warranty runs out!

  • Transmission rebuild at 80K - 2001 Honda Civic
    By -

I bought the Civic for its reputation for reliability buying an 01 and getting the first year of a new model turned out to be a bad thing. Got a great price on a cute little red coupe that, honest to God, had only been driven 3K miles in 2 years by a little old man. Couldnt believe my luck, loved my car very much and planned to buy another new Civic someday, until the transmission suddenly mangled up and died for no reason at 80000 miles. Three thousand dollars in repair costs that I cant afford. According to what Ive read online, the 01s tend to do this to people. Thanks a lot, Honda, youve lost a future customer. Toyota and VW look pretty good right now!

  • Honda Civic Nothing But Trouble - 2001 Honda Civic

I bought my Honda with 30,000 miles on it. It now has 147,000. I have never had such a disappointing car in all my life. The struts went out at 60,000. The air conditioner went out at 85,000. I had multiple oil leaks repaired. The engine burns about 1 quart between oil changes. Also had electric windows repaired and bushing replaced multiple times. But the worst problem has been replacing the transmission, it died at 130,000.

  • A fantastic car!!! - 2001 Honda Civic

A great car overall! Would buy again in a heartbeat! Up to 44 MPG on highway.

  • good car, not great - 2001 Honda Civic

Ive had my Civic EX 5speed for 2 years on this month. Over all its been a good car, pretty relaible. My problems have been my SRS light came on and they had to reset it same with the side air bag light. My battery just went after the first 18 months but they warrentied it for free. It drives well and I like the car alot, I never feel concerned about it starting or breaking down. The clutch is a little diferent than some other cars but works very smoothly once your used to it.
