This Year's Model Updates:

The big news this year is the return of the Civic Si. Featuring an exclusive two-door hatchback body style, the new Si has a 160-horsepower engine. All 2002 Honda Civic sedans and coupes feature a revised steering box for improved driving feel, added sound insulation and slightly tweaked suspension tuning. There are also some smattering of interior storage and comfort upgrades this year.

Pros:
  • Fuel efficient and environmentally friendly engines, roomy interior, reputation for durability, impressive crash-test scores.
Cons:
  • Antilock brakes not available on DX or LX.

  • one year later - 2002 Honda Civic

I purchased my 02 around one year ago and still love the car. Have especially enjoyed comfort, interior design and build quality. Car is still fun to drive, though it probably could use 40 more horse power and larger wheels. Has very good handling and aside from oil consumption in first 6000 miles no real problems (just turned 16K). The exterior design grows on you, but the large slab sided doors are an invitation to dents. Would be nice to have some sort of side molding or other protection. Sun roof controls should be near steering wheel.

This baby gets some killer gas mileage and it lets you have a great time while its getting it. The sport seats are extremely comfy, although they may be too narrow for you big guys and gals. The shifter throws are short and precise and clutch can be engaged with hardly any effort. Torque is so so (it is a four banger) but it is still enough to merge and pass quickly on the highway. Steering is tight and gives decent feedback.

  • As Expected.... Excellence! - 2002 Honda Civic

Wow, Im impressed! A lot of my friends drive Honda Civics and they have had no problems at all with them. My former Oldsmobile gave me a lot of financial burden. The 2002 Honda Civic is a BLESSING! My dealer also sold it to me for $14,450. What a bargain for a reliable, quick, fun to drive, economic, and durable car. An investment not to pass up!

  • Losing its shine - 2002 Honda Civic

I have had no major mechanical problems with this car in 21k miles in 20 months, but it is literally losing its shine. The paint seems kind of dull, I always thought it was applied rather thinly. Way too easily chipped and the body panels are showing lots of dings from rocks and parking lot incidents. Doesnt take much. My biggest concern is the rattle from the dash. It used to be intermittant but is now a constant nuisance. My car and a friends 03 both share the same rattle from the exhaust near the muffler.

  • Great Car - 2002 Honda Civic

Ive had this car for a year and it has been everything I hoped it would be. Sure, I wish it were a little quicker, but it has many virtues besides its sporty character. It has wonderful seats and interior features. The materials are high quality and it never has problems. My friends Nissan Spec-v has been in the shop 4 times in the same amount of milage I have on mine. Its ride is sporty, but not rough at all. Its agile, but never darty. its quick, but never too high strung. A jack of all trades and a hell of a car. (I got an incredible deal on mine too)

  • Overall, seems to be a good choice - 2002 Honda Civic

Ive had my Civic LX for one month now and it seems to have been a good choice for a car under $17,000 so far. The Civic ride is relatively smooth compared to the VW Golf (felt every bump on the road with that "tight" suspension) and Nissan Sentra. Acceleration is less than the Golf and Toyota Corolla, but better than the Sentra and for me, adequate. Gas mileage has been hovering in the 30-35 range so far, okay, I guess in this sad American car market where only a few cars can even come close to that. A couple of things starting to bug me which Ill touch on below

  • Suspension ON my 02 Civic LX - 2002 Honda Civic

Within 5 months of buying my Civic I had to have both front struts replaced. I love my Civic but I hate the suspension. I have had my car in the shop at least 10 times in 2 years for the suspension! I love the look and the drive of the car! They could offer more color choices! It gets great gas mileage! Other tahn the suspension I have no problems with the car! Thay are great little cars!

  • tremendous style and acceptable speed - 2002 Honda Civic

This car catches everyones eye. Most people cant tell who makes it until they see the emblem. I get compliments all the time. The ergonomics are the best, and the stock racing seats and the rally shifter as well. This car shouts "UNIQUE." Its not the fastest of cars these days...wait for the type-r, but these things can always be changed. Drop in a jdm integra-r engine easily, and turbo-charge, and you can probably start trying to compete with an mitsu evo.

When I was looking for a new car I was admiring the Toyota Matrix (pretty much just a newer version of my 1987 Corrolla FX) and the Mini Cooper. I happened to run accross this beauty by happenstance. Even though it may be a year later than the "innovative" matrix and cooper, they can both learn some things from the designers at Honda. Theyve mastered the sporty feel and ride while retaining creature comforts (its so QUIET!) and style--soo sleek. Honda borrowed good ideas from toyota and bmw/mini, then made them better in the Civic SI Vtec
